I REALLY wanted to like this place!! However after having dinner here with my family, I remembered why we came here once they first opened and NEVER came back! First of all, when you first enter there is a very strong odor of Pinesol or Pinalen because the staff was mopping the floor. I appreciate a clean restaurant but come... don't mop the floor when the restaurant is full of customers! We wanted to leave but the kids were hungry so we stayed. My daughters ordered the tonkotsu broth with salmon which was ok/ the rest of the party ordered the beef and complained it was flavorless and tasted strange/ I opted for the vegetarian and was greatly disappointed! The veggie plate was so sad and had some napa cabbage, a couple leaves of bok choy, some kale, a tiny shred of enoki mushrooms and tofu. I understand the veggies are refillable but come on.. don't be so stingy! I ordered the spicy miso and boy was I sorry! It was super oily and was so spicy - it was inedible! I CAN handle my spice but this was stupidly spicy for a broth. Even my waiter apologized and said he's never seen the broth looking this deep red! The ponzu sauce and the sesame sauce were not good! I've had better sauces from the bottles bought at the Japanese market! If you want decent quality Japanese Shabu Shabu - avoid this place! I highly recommend you go somewhere else.

I discovered Mokkoji Shabu Shabu through a social media recommendation, and I'm so glad I did! The food is absolutely delicious, and I love the personal, customizable dining experience. My husband and I tried the spicy pork broth and ordered the 32-piece share portion of the toro fatty belly, which was melt-in-your-mouth tender. You have the option to receive your meat marinated or as is. We opted to have it marinated. It came dressed with garlic and scallions. Each set comes with two sauces: one is a creamy, sesame-based sauce, and the other tastes similar to ponzu, though I couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was. The sets also include rice, udon, and a vibrant veggie platter with bok choy, enoki mushrooms, broccoli, Napa cabbage, kale, and a slice of kabocha squash. The broth was incredible--each vegetable added sweetness and depth, making it even more flavorful as the meal progressed. Even my husband, who isn't a big fan of vegetables, was happily enjoying the veggie-packed meal.We also ordered the assorted pickled vegetables, which I highly recommend. The variety included pickled jalapeños, cucumbers, radish, and kimchi, all of which added a refreshing acidity that perfectly balanced the richness of the fatty beef.Beyond the food, the service was attentive and friendly. The ambiance is cozy and a modern. Great for a date night or casual outing. We left feeling completely satisfied! I'm looking forward to sharing this place with friends and family who are visiting.

My cousins brought me here to celebrate my 25th birthday. I love shabu, and I have yet to try this spot out.Parking: They're located in a medium sized plaza, and there's plenty of free parking.Ambiance/Environment: It's very clean inside. There's a decent amount of seating. We visited on a Thursday night, so it wasn't too busy.Service: Our server was efficient. We didn't catch her name, but she was knowledgable about the menu when we asked questions. Throughput was under 15 min after ordering. After receiving our orders, our server checked on us a couple times.Soup & meats: My bf and I ordered the 'specials for 2' and went with the shared brisket set. The soup was decent; wasn't too salty. My favorite part were the briskets. It came with a generous amount of briskets. The toppings were also fresh. This special included beers and desserts.

OK, I don't really like hot pot, but this place is an exceptionTheir food is solid, and that's not deceptionmake sure you get their marinated meat because that's the bestI love this place over all the hot pot rest. They're super clean and the wait staff are super niceBut mind you, it's kinda cold in there, kinda like ice (not that bad, just needed to rhyme ;) I really like this place. They have a long bar in the middle, with some tables that seat four on the left side. They have size portions that are S, M, and L, but there's also a "SH" which means sharing. When asking for the meat, they'll ask if you want marinated, which you should say "YES" because it's delicious. If you like spicy, they'll come around asking if you'd like some drops. Apparently these drops are super powerful. My wife does two drops in her sauce, and 3-5 drops in her soup. But mind you, it's really spicy.

I'm generally very meh when it comes to shabu, but I can def say Mokkoji is my FAVORITE place for shabu now!! It's so good I'm still thinking about it a week later. I hateee waiting, but there was no wait on a Friday night at this location. Our party got seated v quickly.Minor caveat to everything is that you have to pay for your broth selection, which I haven't seen at many places other than Haidilao. I got spicy pork broth and it was v good tho. I got flat iron cut and everyone else got toro. The meat quality is SOOO good. That's what sets this place apart from other shabu restaurants. And you have the option for your meats to come marinated, too. We each got a large meat selection and it was a decent amount of meat. Not sure about rice, but veggies were refillable.I'm def looking forward to my next socal trip so I can come back :)

GASS. one of the best hot pot places i've been to! got the fatty toro and the meat was so delicious. the meat is garnished with garlic before you cook in the broth and I feel like this adds such a unique flavor to their meat. I got the pork bone broth and it was so yummy. when u order the meat it comes with a bowl of veggies with udon and it was the perfect amount. the tofu with the mokkoji logo is so aesthetic. the service was really good. the guy with the piercings served us and he was really attentive and checked in on our table to ensure we had everything. he was really accommodating and made sure we were satisfied with our meal. definitely recommend trying mokkoji if u love shabu!

Quick & efficient service. I liked that you can get multiple meats. My partner had the plain broth and they weren't kidding when they called it plain... I got the sukiyaki flavor which is my usual go to but theirs was not as flavorful as others I have tried. Their meats were really yummy and I would defiantly recommend requesting they come marinaded as the garlic flavoring was really good and helped flavor the soup a bit. Overall not my favorite place for hot pot but it wasn't bad.

My friends and I are all Mokkoji lovers and always go to this location, Irvine, or Costa Mesa. They recently updated their prices and Toro is now $4 more compared to last month. Toro is also more expensive than Flat Iron when it usually is the other way around. The last two times that my friends and I ate at this specific location, we experienced severe stomach pains each time. We all got different broths so idk what it is. My udon also came out partially black from the dirty vegetables. Service is also so incredibly slow, especially during dinner time. There are so many servers on the weekends but none can seem to work efficiently. We asked for water refill and ladles multiple times and no one ever stopped by because some of the workers are too busy chatting it up with other customers. The only thing they're quick with is giving out the checks. I would say lunch time is a better time to come since they don't have a front desk which is odd. During dinner time, all the waiting customers are just crowded near the door not knowing who to check in with. Restroom is also dirty.

Finally was ably to try Mokkoji. Before 6pm on a Saturday was key. We did have a reservation, but the place was wide open. It was completely full by the time we left though. I ordered the Brisket and my wife got the Mokkoji special. Both were excellent. Veggies were fresh.
