We love Mokkoji! This was our first time at this location and I think this has got to be our favorite location. Our server was attentive, sweet, and accommodating. She made sure all our needs were met and checked in on us to see if we needed anymore sauce, sides, etc. Grateful for the amazing service! We got the spicy pork broth and spicy miso broth with toro fatty belly to share and shishito peppers. Love a good shishito pepper and these did not disappoint! I'm still dreaming about the toro!! I really love the seating at this location, lots of seating indoor and outdoor. The layout is great.I can't wait to go back and enjoy shabu with friends and family here!

Starting off with the service, we were sat down at the bar and not given any menu or guidance to scan the QR codes; they simply showed us our seats and automatically walked away. Once we figured out the menus were on the QR code, we decided to order the special for two. The special came with two drinks, fried garlic shrimp, sliced meat, veggies, rice, and ice cream. In addition to the special, we ordered a side of fried cake balls. The pricing is good for the amount of food and quality! The server dropped off our food and left again without saying anything. When another server walked past us, I had to ask how to turn on the stove because we were not informed anything.

4.5 Stars! Mokkoji in Costa Mesa is pretty good and you get a lot for the price you pay. I give it a 4.5 stars only because the spicy miso broth was slightly different than I expected and wasn't quite the typical miso flavor, but I still enjoyed it. It's not too spicy and just enough for flavor. I ordered the pork belly and got about 16 slices--pretty good quality and sliced perfectly. There is shabu bar style seating, plus regular tables inside and outside as well as heaters so, evening and night time dining still works out. I just want to point out that the manager there is SUPER efficient and accommodating. It was pretty busy, but he made sure everyone had great service and that the servers were on point. The space is also clean and well manicured. I would highly recommend giving this place a try!

Though I love the food at Mokkoji, the last few times I've been to this location have been less than great. One time, they completely forgot my dad's order until we brought it up and reminded them. This last time, the manager seemed to make long conversations with tables even though there was a huge waitlist. I thought this was inconsiderate, knowing lots of people were waiting and not prioritizing getting people in and out. The waiters are always super professional however, and very helpful to us always.

This is a nice shabu shabu (Japanese hot pot) in Costa Mesa. Seatings are limited, so I'd recommend getting a reservation before you come. On the menu, you can pick your broth, meat, add-ons, and appetizers. It's not AYCE, so everything costs extra, even to get a different broth than the original. The regular 10 pieces of meat with rice and veggies was enough to get me full. If you're particular hungry, you can get bigger sizes for more proteins. Check out the combinations at the bottom, too. You can get beef + another protein. My friend got scallops in addition and she enjoyed them. Note: Don't forget to turn on your personal stove. Turn up the heat to get your broth boiling and then you can turn it down to your liking. * Spicy Miso Broth 5/5 - The broth was good, mildly spicy. * Brisket 5/5 - You can get these marinated and that added so much flavors. * Garlic Shrimp 5/5 - These were very tasty and crispy.

This place hits the spot in this cold weather! It's cozy and clean and the staff is very attentive. They had a variety of options for broth and meat, and even had a vegetarian package! We started off with garlic shrimp and I picked the sukiyaki broth base and the two item combo with brisket and scallops. Garlic Shrimp- This was such a flavorful starter! You can really taste the garlic seasoning and the shrimp was nice and tender. You get a sweet and spicy sauce to pair.Hotpot- The sukiyayi broth is sweet and they give you a lot of vegetables to accompany the broth. The brisket is soft and ready in less than a minute. The scallops were fresh and tender but take care not to overcook. They offer you two side sauces to enhance but I personally didn't need it since my broth was already flavorful. Great meal overall! Would definitely come back.

Firstly, I love that they use induction stove tops to get the soup hot; I feel like it makes it a better and safer experience. The food was good, and they have a pretty easy to read menu. My favorite of the meats we ordered was the brisket, it was the perfect amount of fat and meat. We ordered flat iron and the toro fat belly too, but the brisket was my favorite. We also got the spicy cucumber and the pickled jalapeños as well to add a nice crunch to the rest of the meal. We got sat pretty quickly as well, and service was fine. It did take a little long for us to flag someone down to get our bill, but nothing too frustrating. The place is moderate noise, and still quiet enough to hear your conversation with the table. Overall, a great place to try and def would come back to get their higher tier meat options.

This is my first time going to Mokkoji as I've heard from word of mouth that this is the go-to spot for shabu shabu! I decided to try it specifically at this location as it has better ratings in terms of service and overall experience. Fresh baskets of veggies and toppings were already laid on out the table and we had to scan the QR code on the table for the menu. Also, tip: Check in for a free refill of veggies! Otherwise, the only veggies they can refill are limited to the cabbage and kale I believe.I was recommended the Spicy Pork Broth and either the Toro Fatty Beef Belly or Flat Iron "Mokkoji" Beef cut as the proteins. The portion size of the meats range from 10pcs to 52 pcs of meat. They also asked if I wanted the meats marinated in sauce in which I agreed upon. After mixing my soup paste with the broth and it was boiling, I cooked my meats. The beef was good quality and held the flavor of their garlic sauce after cooking. My soup became more flavorful after every dip but got a little heavy towards the end of the meal. I like that they include udon noodles and white rice as well. To amp up the spice, we added these spicy drops. I found 2-3 drops to be perfect for my spice level, however, I think 4-5 drops would make the broth actually spicy.Service was great and attentive and this Shabu experience did meet my expectations! I do see myself coming back to Mokkoji again as I feel like the value and quality is up there!

Reviewing this days later and seeing the pictures is already making me crave this experience again. Went for a weekend lunch with some friends and they were able to sit 9 of us.Starting off the staff was already super chill, and our serve bantered and joked with us back and forth, but was still super helpful for the few of us who had not dined here yet.Like many shabu places, you get to select your broth and there was a wide selection, I stuck with the spicy sukiyaki and it was a great choice. It was not overly sweet like other sukiyakis I have had and worked great with the meat and vegetables. The place is not AYCE, and you're able to select a plate of varying sizes of a meat of your choosing. The Toro is the cheapest selection, but definitely does not taste that way. Fatty bites of thinly sliced beef had me coming back for bite after bite. The marinade on top was fantastic as well. Though each slice was thin, it was still enough to get a satisfying bite each time. Accompanied by their goma (which has to be the best goma I have had at a shabu place so far) and ponzu could leave you salivating. My friend and I ordered a Shared Plate which is 32 pcs of Meat which is a little more than a Large while being slightly cheaper. She was unable to finish her portion, and I was getting pretty full as well. I'd recommend if you can eat a good amount and want to be satisfied if a Shared plate is not an option a M or L plate definitely suffices.
