HB Japonica is fantastic! Their Brussels sprouts are our family favorite--yes, Brussels and sushi sound like an odd combo, but trust me, with the magic of balsamic vinegar and mandarins, it works! I'm grateful they still have outside seating and ample heaters. WORD OF CAUTION: If you're trying to decide which SB Japonica to visit, make it HB--the other locations have seriously lacked in service. The El Segundo team was especially bad, with servers and hosts who go out of their way to avoid eye contact, only speaking with each other, not the patrons, in an "I'm too busy to acknowledge you exist" manner. Once seated, don't expect much--unless you flag someone down because you have an empty bottle of soy sauce on the table - they'll make sure you know you're inconveniencing them.At the Redondo location, we were completely forgotten in a corner after our appetizer order--but to be fair, they shared they were experiencing some staffing issues and comped us some mochi. The food is consistently good to great across all locations, but poor service experience multiple times at El Segundo will keep us from going back to that location.

While the food tasted good, service was both slow and poor. Upon our arrival, we were seated inside at the window. That's the only service we got. We were ignored after we were seated. No menus. I tried for several minutes to attract some attention. Again, the waitress never came back to take our ordwr. I had to endeavor to attract someone's attention in order to place our order. Our order was delivered by a runner and the waitress never came around to ask if everything was ok.To make matters worse the ambience created by the head-banging heavy metal music that was way too loud was terrible! I appreciate heavy metal but I don't care for it blasting while I'm trying to have something to eat. When I brought up the music and how loud it was to our waitress she looked at me with a blank stare unable to comprehend what I was complaining about. Not only did she do nothing about it, but she didn't even think to mention it to her manager or if she did nobody else came around to check in on us.We were unable to order another drink or anything else without having to spend a lot of effort to attract the attention of our waitress. All of this was pretty ridiculous given the small size of the restaurant.We waited, and waited, and waited for our waitress come around to see if we were ready for the check. But of course she didn't. After I was able to attract her attention she brought the check. Do you think she came back for payment? Of course not! So once again lots of effort to attract her attention so that we could pay the bill and go. While the food was good the service and ambience was terrible. We will not be returning!

I go to alot of sushi restaurants, mostly farther north in WLA; so I'm very picky for this category.The sushi was not great and had a kind of slimy texture I don't encounter often(maybe not fresh). Prices are what you'd expect so there's no value bump.Food 3Service 2Ambience/location 4Value 2Overall rating: 3Repeat visit: NOService also brought it down because I waited several minutes for a server at a patio table and finally had to tell her I was outside waiting(and there was only a few people outside, not hard to miss.I have to conclude this place is overrated and just average but I do compare it to the top tier WLA places not southbay.

This place is a great spot for a date or small group meet up. I loved how intimate it was, the ambiance was very youthful and I LOVE their unique sauce. The service was great and the food tasty. I give it 4 stars because it did feel cramped inside and a little uncomfortable when a group of six people came. It led to some strange maneuvering in order to get to the bathroom.

Ordered delivery. Crispy Rice was a huge disappointment. Like freeze dried, rock hard rice. All else was tasty and enjoyed. We would have preferred more chopsticks included along with additional sauce packets/condiments. Shishitos were WONDERFUL. SPICY EDAMAME were WONDERFUL. Rolls were nice. Would order again.

Love the outdoor area and vibe of this place which is very close to Hermosa Beach. The staff is super friendly and service was prompt. I had the sushi lunch combo which includes a miso soup, 6 pieces of nigiri and 4 pieces of either a cali or spicy tuna roll and a side. The sushi was delicious especially with the smoky soy sauce. For the side, I had the Tempura shrimp which was slightly over battered and could be a little more crunchy. My husband had the ramen lunch special and loved it. Overall, great experience and I'd come back again.
