Once upon a time food trucks drove around serving mediocre food with B ratings. I remember working at a company and whenever we saw the food truck coming, we'd call it the "roach truck."Today, food trucks serve gourmet, unique and awesome food. Thank you Get Toasted for making us believe in the power of food trucks!

Today I had some time to kill, and decided to try to catch the Glowfish food truck (which rarely seems to come downtown) at CNN (Sunset & Cole in Hollywood.) I didn't get there until 1:50, and just as I park and start walking toward the truck, it pulls out and I watch my planned pancake disappear. But hey, when life hands me lemons, most of the time I can make lemonade. Instead of heading back to the car, I decide to see what other food trucks are there (there's still a half dozen left.) I've had too many mediocre food truck meals, so now I usually only hit those that score a 4-5 on the Yelp-o-meter. So nothing catches my eye until I see "Get Toasted." It's got a line bigger than the others, but I'm not pure sheep, so I Yelp it and it scores solidly.I get in line, study the menu, and am pleasantly surprised by the prices. I decide to go for the three salbutes (mini tostada-like things) and drink special, and get the day's special salbute on the side. The staff on the truck were super-friendly and polite. They earned one star for great service before I even got the food.WHAT I HAD:Trio of salbutes (I chose carnitas, short rib and pork belly)Small peach vanilla iced teaExtra salbute (spicy crab, their daily special)MOST FAVORITE TO LEAST FAVORITE:(but to be honest, I'd eat all of them again except maybe the short rib)Carnitas - DE-FREAKIN-LICIOUS. Moist and juicy and lots of flavor. Pickled onions and cilantro were perfect complement.Pork Belly - Crispy and fatty and lots of flavor.Spicy Crab - yummy -- and loads of crab -- but not really spicy. Would have been a clear fav for me if the flavor was punched up just a little more. Either more spice or a citrus kick would've made this my #1 instead of my #3.Short Rib - a tiny bit dry and not quite enough flavor. The only other two notes I'd give:1) Take some of the stems off the cilantro before chopping it. I love cilantro, but the stems can get bitter when there's a lot of them. I ended up fishing some of them out and enjoyed it a lot more.2) The peach vanilla iced tea (which was a sweetened black tea, I believe) was really good, but too sweet for my taste. It was in the ballpark of most bottled commercial iced teas (Snapple, Nestea) which is a little sweeter than I like. But that's me. Others no doubt will love it as it is.FINAL VERDICT:I thought it was an excellent (and a very good value) meal for $10 flat. I would definitely go again. A few tweaks and I'd give it 5 stars.

I wish Yelp! had an incomplete option for new businesses. I caught the Get Toasted truck on their first day today and while the food was good and the food was half-price. These guys are not even close to being ready to handle a typical day. The food was good. good enough for a 5 in fact, but the service us w-a-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y too slow, and since their main products are toasted sandwiches it may take a capital investment for them to speed things up much.I got there at 2:55 and got on line underneath a canopy they had set up to keep their customers out of the sun. Give them props for that. The order taker may have been the most inefficient guy in the world. he would take the order, write it down, read the order to the cooks, ask the cook how much it was; collect the money; count the money, hand the money to a cook; wait for the change; count the change, and give the change back to the customer, the cook would also have to hand him drinks from inside the truck. Some kid needed a fork, and she had to ask the guy to ask the cook, to stop what he was doing to get a fork and give it to the guy to give to the kid, This set-up may work on Judge Judy where you have to hand the photos to the bailiff so he can put them in Judge Judy;s hand, but in real life it is silly. Make 10 customers wait so no one swipes an extra fork??? It's just silly to me. Anyway after a 15 minute wait I ordered a "Twisted Cali Cheese Steak". I also got a side of marinated olives and peppers and a bottle of water. It came to $6.50. How they got to the number is a mystery to me as no prices were posted. He mentioned it was half-price for opening day, but I wasn't clear if he meant the sandwich was half-price or everything was. I hate to think my order would have been $13.00. Maybe the drink and side were full-rice I just don't know.Anyway, 30 minutes later (as I verified by the time-stamps on my photos) I was handed my sandwich. It was a little small, but nor dramatically so, and it was delicious. Depending on how it prices out, this could be a 5-star meal. The rib eye was tender, the onions and mushrooms were perfectly grilled. the Jack cheese was melted just right too.The roll was toasted on the outside while the inside was still soft, and I liked how the sandwich press branded my roll with the truck name. As cool as that is, if that adds wait time to a customers order though, I would suggest they lose it. A couple more gripes. Their beverages consisted of Jarritos sodas, Gatorade, Mexican Peps, and bottled water. They also had sweet tea that the cook poured into red Solo cups. I might have gotten one, but they weren't on the menu and I had no idea it was available until after I ordered. Other than water, their were no 0 calorie options. Sometimes a guy just needs a carbonated caffeine fix.,Somehow they overlooked getting the required No Smoking within 40 Feet Signs the City of LA requires.. Since it was Day 1, I will cut them a bit of slack, but they need to post the signs. They can print one here if they need one www.freshairdiningla.comGourmet Food Truck #175 on my never-ending quest to try every truck in "So Cal"

This is gooood..Let me preface this with: I like food trucks. I know they're very popular right now too...I have watched all the seasons of "The Great Food Truck Race"... yes, it's a great show... and I don't know. The concept to me is very interesting.Anyway, I know the food trucks tend to congregate on Chatsworth Street in Granada Hills. (Ironically, when I was born I lived like a couple steps from where they were situated today... but that's a whole other story)...and there are usually a couple on Mason/Devonshire... but, the vast majority are on Chatsworth Street.Anyway, since Mied didn't have his scheduled class today and we were already out... we ended up venturing up here for some food. There were a ton of people and it was coooold. Windy.. which I love... but also very cold. Everything looked kind of yummy and the longest line was definitely for this place. I had heard of them before... I believe they're most "famous" for the fact that they burn "get toasted" on the top of their sandwiches as a way to brand them... kind of like how they do that "U" at Umami Burger. This does nothing in terms of taste... but it is definitely unique.Anyway, I had the grilled cheese which was delicious. I know, right? How good can a grilled cheese really get? Well, I had mine with a little bit of broiled beef...and the different cheeses: Jack, Cheddar and Cotija (which truly made it very unique... and really tasty). My dog loves cheese... more than anything else in the world... so I had to give him a tiny piece and he swallowed it up in a second and kept attacking me for the rest of my sandwich! I would definitely try some of the other sandwiches... I just wasn't starving and just wanted something small. A couple people in front of me also had the Salbutes which I would be interested in trying... as they are one of their specialties...and something you can't really get at many places. And let me also add the peach vanilla iced tea was amazingly tasty! I mean really really good! :)

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I had this truck at the Chatsworth Truck Meet. (Wednesday and Friday Evenings @Chatsworth and Zelzah) and I fell in love. I had their Curry Chicken BLT. It was something unique and something I haven't seen yet. I was excited to try it and when I had my first bite. BOMB DIGGITY!. The curry flavoring was not over power. The chicken was tender. The bacon wasn't chewy or too hard/crispy. The sauce. It was just ... right. The salty, subtle spice of the curry blt was complimented by the sweet potato fries. YUM. With the sweet potato fries comes this wasabi aioli. I think that it was interesting and unique, but it wasn't for me. Not to say it wasn't good, just not for me. I also had their Twisted Cali sandwich. That was good too. The mushrooms and red onions add this sweetness to the tender phillychesse-esque sandwich. Yet another great sandwich. I love this truck so much, I even got their Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich. If you see it, you'll probably be like ... Uhhh ... WHAAA? $5! But if you have a hankering for PBJ, this is gourmet and yummy. Homemade peanut butter and jelly. It's not overly sweet, just right. There service is awesome too! I haven't been to the truck when it's packed yet, so don't hold that against me. But the three times that I've been to them, I've always been greetly kindly and professionally. The head chef/owner is a really cool guy. He's really nice and great to talk to, but most of the time, he is just cooking his butt off. Don't expect this to be a McDonalds-order-speed, because great things take time. The only bad thing that I can say about this place is that I need to find and drive to the damn truck. But it's a truck, it's meant to be found; and what a find this was for me. I do not believe that you can go wrong with any sandwich they have. GetToasted sadly branded me like they did their bread. Hooked.

For $10, I got a trio of salbutes (Yucatan-style tostadas) of Bicol express (a special menu item), pork belly, and short rib plus kamote fries and peach vanilla iced tea. Hot damn, it was worth every penny and more! * The trio of salbutes were a perfect size to share with my fiance. We got to taste a little bit of all three meats. Bicol express was an unanimous winner-- pork stewed in coconut milk with some jalapeno peppers mixed in. I think it stands up well with the Yucatan-style tostada and the pickled onion-cilantro-tomato salsa. * The kamote fries were done perfectly. I'm a lover of sweet potato fries but damn, this place takes the cake! The kamote fries are nice and fluffy, not drenched in oil. * The peach vanilla iced tea was delicious. No need to add sugar; just a simple and pure glass of iced tea to complement the rest of the meal.Overall, I dig this food truck. The menu items are nice and simple, not need to hide behind some gimmick or trend. Each bite of the salbutes made me savor the moment slowly and with full attention. I didn't want to stuff my face with the food, rather I wanted to appreciate each bite slowly but surely. Thanks, Chef John and your crew, for a wonderful meal. You go against the grain of many food trucks-- your food stands on its own without all that trendy noise.

The trucks just happened to be around my area and I decided to forgo the trip to Vons for some roasted chicken. I'm glad that I did. John, the co-owner, decided to hop out of the truck and help me out with my decision. I was looking for something that would fill up this hungry bear for dinner. His response? Twisted Cali Cheese Steak. Delicious. Flavorful. Heavenly. This is not your ordinary sammich. Short ribs that are cooked to juicy, savory perfection with carmalized onions and cheese oozing on a roll. Throw some sweet potato fries with wasabi aioli(I'm a sucker for aioli) and add a brew of their own creation of sweet tea infused with fruit(varies day to day from what they told me) on a summer night. BAM. I've "GOT TOASTED" Best part? $9 for the sammich, sweet tea, and your choice of fries. They have 3 different kinds. I had the sandwich 3 hours ago and i'm still full. Thanks Get Toasted Truck for a great meal. You'll be seeing me again soon!

The food was amazing!! It was something you would expect from a trendy/gourmet sandwich shop in West LA or Melrose or something. I had the cali cheesesteak and my wife had the lechon/pulled pork sandwich. We also had sweet potato fries with wasabi aioli dipping sauce and short rib tostadas. The sweet tea was really refreshing on a very hot and humid day. The canopy was indeed a good touch, as well as the toast stamp on the bread. It's the simple details like these that make you stand out.Yes, it was a little slow, but this is their opening day so I cut them a little slack to work out the kinks. Sometimes it can even take 30 minutes or more to get food from In-N-Out at lunchtime, and they've been doing this for years. I think any food truck will also be a tad slower when they have to service 50-100 people all lining up at the same time (based on my guesstimate). It wasn't a steady flow of people filtering in and out - it was literally a mob that decided to get in line all at once. And we're not talking full scale kitchen with 10 chefs working at the same time to handle this situation, we're talking typical food truck with 1-2 people cooking the food. I've been to numerous food truck festivals and have been in line for over 2 hours on more than one occassion, given the same scenario. From what I saw, I did not see a cook handling money at all. There was an order taker, two cooks, and someone handling the cash register and drinks - 4 people total. I actually liked the fact that the order taker was outside the truck and not inside behind the window like most food trucks. All in all, I say a good first day. Could it be better? Sure. In anything, there will always be some room from improvement. Again, it was their first day so I gave them a learning curve in this review. However, I expect them to just get better as they progress, and if their food remains as good as it is, I will follow this truck wherever they go. In fact, I think I'll have the Curry Chicken BLT sandwich for dinner tonight.

Get Toasted Food TruckLA Food Truck Review #3Siting: First Thursdays in DT San Pedro Art Walk (6-10 pm)What are they known for?- Trio Salbutes (Yucatan-influenced tostadas)- "Get Toasted" branded on their sandwiches (very distinct way to market themselves)- Any of their "get toasted" sandwiches- Grilled Cheese sandwich (which my friend had and she fell in love with this!)What did I order?- Lechon (pork) Get Toasted Sandwich ($7) and for $3 more I added sweet potato fries (which came with a wasabi aioli dip) and their tea of the day (which they make!) The meat was delicious in the bun which kinda reminded me of a Vietnamese-style sandwich. Flavors were spot-on and fries were cooked quite well. The wasabi aioli dip complimented the sweet potato fries and the spicy kick from my sandwich as well. - Tea of the day: Vanilla Raspberry Iced Tea (delicious! very light and refreshing!)Overall thought:For $10 I was COMPLETELY SATISFIED for a meal combo. The Filipino and hispanic owners run this place and I applaud them for generating a great concept with influential flavors. Mad props for this food truck. They create their meals from scratch and you can totally tell they put their heart and soul into the food truck. Great service, yummy and flavorful food and affordable! This one is not to be missed!I am a fan and would be back!
