I've never had tempura sauce with grated radish in it, but I enjoyed it. I'm not a fan of shrimp so it was great that I was able to substitute it with veggie tempura (chicken is also an available substitute). The service was good, it doesn't take too long for the food to come out, and the restaurant is clean. I can't wait to come back!"

Gabriel B. "I came here for my birthday, and I was very delighted by the dishes! Tips:- Their wait staff isn't the most attentive, so I would work hard on flagging them down.- Waiting can be a PAIN on weekend nights. I highly suggest making a reservation a week in advance, or coming in half an hour early to be the first on the waitlist. I was second, and had to wait an hour and a half just to be seated.- If you plan to come with a large party, expect to have the exact number, because seating indoors is always packed!- Bar seating will get you in much faster, but you can only order off the sushi menu. Still worth it if you don't plan to buy any of the bowls. If you can make it through these hurdles, I'd say the food is very much worth the price. The ramen and chirashi bowls (both premium and non-premium) may seem pricey, but are definitely shareable between two people. The quality of their fish is so fresh that the price justifies it."

Keycee D. "Oak and Coal has been on my list for a while, thanks to TikTok. It was also on my husband's list to try. Finally made it out with my husband and toddler one Monday evening in October, and we were not disappointed! There was no wait, but the steady foot traffic showed we were in for a treat. Here's what we tried: * Chicken Karaage: Perfectly cooked with a crispy, flavorful batter. The hint of lemon zest in the batter was a great touch, so we didn't even need to add extra lemon. * Chashu Bao Buns: Delicious, fluffy bao buns with pork that was tender and flavorful. Everything in it was perfectly balanced. * Kurobuta Sausage Skewer: The sausage was juicy and flavorful. Can't go wrong with it. * Snake River Wagyu Beef Skewer: Cooked to perfection. The flavor was fantastic, and the beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender. * Seared Hamachi: Good, though we've had slightly better. The grilled asparagus was a nice addition, pairing well with the fish. For drinks, my husband tried a bartender's choice cocktail, which was deliciously refreshing. I went with the lychee spritz--light, refreshing, and not overly sweet.Overall, Oak and Coal was an awesome dining experience, and we can't wait to return and explore more of their full bar in the back (reservations only). Highly recommend!"

There's ample parking outside in a big shopping plaza lot and praise GOD at 11:45am there's no wait. A few minutes after we ordered the place was full :)We ordered 2 large American beef don as that was recommended to us and I ordered a sunny side up egg with it. My wife had eggs for breakfast so she opt out. My wife enjoyed the meal and I was quit disappointed as I've been waiting a long time to try this place out and may have had a higher expectation plus when I'm paying more I expect more. I'll start off with the egg. It's sunny side up so I expected the yolk to be running but it was not. It was more like medium done without any liquid. The roast beef was part luke warm and part cold and I'd recommend parting the meat from the rice as it's hidden underneath and there's lots of it. The rice was not as soft as I expect from a Japanese restaurant and I didn't finish it.Overall: service was good, food came quick as I expect it's all pre-made and refrigerated then heated up but upside to that was we didn't have to leave the baby too long with my mother in law to watch. My wife enjoyed it so I'm happy about that. I will return if my wife ever craves for it but def not without her."

By the time you finish your noodles, your bowl would be completely empty, too.Let talk about this location. Parking is on the side of the building, pretty compact, and can get quite busy, so expect to park in the street. It is well worth the visit. The interior of the restaurant has a warm feeling to it, quite roomy from bar seating to regular tables seating. If it is busy, seating at the bar is good too. You can watch them prepare the sushi art work, pretty cool. They have quite a selection of food to choose from, but if you undecided, just try their noodles or fried rice special. You can't go wrong with that. What I usually order is:1. Boat Noodles Soup $14.99Noodle soup with beef, meat balls, beef stewed, and vegetables.2. Spicy Chicken Wings $15.99Fried chicken wings marinated with spicy special Thai sauce.3. Fireworks Roll $16.99Inside shrimp tempura and spicy tuna, top with seared tuna , sliced jalapeno, togarashi seasoning, and sweet ponzu sauce.I do switch things up but I always get their noodles, its a must for me. If you're like me, I tend to put Sriracha on everything, I suggest you dont ask for it here cause that's not thai spice. They have their own spice. The dish includes udon noodles, beef, and vegetables in a cream sauce. It was my first time trying this dish after seeing it all over social media this past year, and I'm happy to say it lived up to the hype. The sauce was different; it was thicker than what I'm used to from Asian restaurants while still maintaining a subtle taste of curry. The creaminess of the sauce comes from the use of cooking cream, or alternatively, evaporated milk. So you can imagine how thick the sauce coating the udon noodles was. All in all, it was a satisfying meal. ******************My Ratings:1 Star: Terrible; just thinking about it makes me angry.2 Stars: Wasn't a fan so Not likely to return.3 Stars: Meh. Average. They came with miso soup which was flavorful and had plenty of tofu pieces, 5 pieces of sushi or 6 pieces of sashimi, and a roll. I recommend choosing the sashimi - the pieces were large and the fish was clean and fresh. The dragon roll (california roll topped with eel) tasted amazing. I also really liked the garfield roll, which was a california roll topped with baked salmon. Lastly, we ordered a surf roll and I loved the seaweed salad on top! My husband said it was like a dessert roll. All the rolls were thick and well portioned. I will definitely come back and recommend to others. Vanessa M. "My gf and I like usual were craving sushi and searched out a spot near by work. I had Kaigen bookmarked so we made a reservation at the bar. Parking is in an open lot, and it was pretty empty when we went inside. The menu is pretty standard, along with their specials on the board and their omakase options. They also do have yakitori which is a plus. We could not figure out what we wanted so we both decided on the sushi omakase. _Sushi Omakase ($42) Comes with 9 pieces nigiri sushi, and yellowtail hand roll or blue crab hand roll, miso soup and salad. The order is as follows;+Bluefin Tuna. The tuna is fresh and although I am not a big fan of bluefin tuna, this was simple and good. +Amberjack. A solid nigiri. It did not need much soy sauce as it was already dressed in a ligtht sauce that seemed like a ponzu sauce.+Sea Bream. A very light fish, and often can be a bit bland. It was topped with a bit of yuzu koshu and salt, that gives a light salty flavor to bring out the fish and a bit of spice from the yuzu koshu. +Scallop. One of my favorites. Fresh and meaty. Topped with a bit of black salt.+Cherry Salmon. Different from a regualr salmon and salmon belly. Less fatty than the belly, and a bit more sweeter. This was good.+Sea Bass. This was mild and light. The sauce and garnish on top was great. +Toro. The toro was fresh and slighty fatty. Melts in your mouth. +Black Cod. This is what I kept seeing on yelp and I was happy that it was included in the omakase, otherwise I would have ordered it a la carte. Slightly fatty and oily, but in the right ways. The char marks were beautifully done and had that nice depth of flavor to it. +Blue Crab Hand Roll. Pretty solid, I thought it was baked but that was my fault. Good amount of fresh crab meat to rice ratio. +Uni (off omakase) This nigiri was not the typical wrapped in nori nigiri. Just a big slab of fresh uni on top of the rice. It was fresh, not the best I''ve had, but enough to hit that uni craving. _Kiss of Fire Roll ($18) Spicy tuna, fresh jalapeno, cucumber and avocado inside, cajun peppered seared ahi tuna on top with chili ponzu sauce. This roll was a bit spicy but more of a peppery taste than a slow burning spice. A pretty good roll. I will say, I was not a fan of the sushi rice. I find that the rice can be more important than the fish itself, and I was not a fan of the texture. Overall very fair price for the quality. Great service. Will be back to itch my sushi cravings and try their yakitori as well."

David K. ""Money Sea" or "Sea Money" as Okane Umi translates to English...or maybe it's "Show me (see) the money!"I've been here a few times now and I always enjoy myself. Really, my only complaint is the prices but then, sushi everywhere is pricey so this gripe isn't solely about Okane Umi. Still, I do think they could lower some of the prices to attract more clientele but maybe they don't need to because Okane Umi is quite popular. I guess I miss the old Club Sushi (Hermosa Beach) days with my Dad. We were monthly regulars of their amazing Happy Hour which included 1/2 price sushi and specials on drinks. I'd love to see that at Okane Umi and I'd definitely frequent it more often. But I digress. The restaurant itself is modern and attractive and the staff is friendly and attentive. Our most recent visit was for my birthday and my Mom was treating us. I'd made sushi at home multiple times of late so I let her pay for us this time. It is DEFINITELY cheaper to make sushi at home (I paid $6.75 for two pieces of salmon sushi at Okane Umi and I can get a big hunk of sushi grade salmon at Tokyo Central for $10-$12 that makes about 16 pieces), that's for sure, and I've gotten quite good at it, I must say. But every once in awhile, it's nice to turn it over to the professionals. And professionals they are. In addition to regular sushi (which is of very good quality), Okane Umi's menu is large with many creative rolls being offered. I really like how the menu has pictures and full descriptions of each roll.Of the more expensive rolls, we ordered the Hulk Roll ($17.50 - Inside: Spicy smashed Softshell Crab, Crab Meat / Outside: Avocado, Spicy Smashed Soft Shell Crab / With: Sriracha on the Top, Eel Sauce on the Side), Yellowtail Cilantro Roll ($18.50 - Inside: Cucumber, Yellowtail, Cilantro / Outside: Yellowtail, Serrano Pepper / With: Ponzu Sauce on the Top) and two of the rather ridiculously costly Umi Handrolls ($24.50 each - Inside: Cucumber, Chopped, Bluefin Tuna, Sea Urchin, Black Tobiko, Cilantro, Jalapeno, Green Onion / Outside: Wrapped with Soy Paper).Aside from the Umi Handroll, I'm not sure why the other two rolls were priced considerably higher than 'Premium Rolls' which are priced higher than the 'Basic Rolls'. Basic rolls (like California ($7), Spicy Tuna ($8.50), Salmon Skin ($8.50) seem fairly priced; we orderd a Salmon Skin roll and it was tasty. But then the Premium Rolls are $12 - $17. Then the Okane Specialty Rolls are $14 - $24.50 with most being in the $18 average range. Okane Chefs Special Rolls are around the prices of the Okane Specialty Rolls. Oh, and I looked up what Okane means...MONEY!Again, I'm just bitching about high prices in general and these are pretty average compared to other good sushi bars of the same calibre. I just think the Hulk Roll and the Spicy Yellowtail roll could come down a few bucks...and well, the Umi Roll...it was definitely special but I too think that could come down a few bucks as well.As for the taste of the rolls, everything was great. I'd say the Hulk Roll was my least favorite and the my favorite is always the Yellowtail Cilantro Roll. The Umi Handroll was new for me and really delicious but I keep thinking about that $49 charge for the two of 'em.We also ordered the Honey Salmon Roll ($15.50 - Inside: Crabmeat, Fresh Salmon / Outside: Deep Fried (Seaweed Outside) / With: Eel and Spicy Mayo on top) and it was tasty as well as a couple veggie rolls (veggie tempura roll and a cucumber, avocado, cream cheese roll) in soy paper ($1.50 upcharge) for my non-seafood eating wife ($12 & $12.50) and she enjoyed them very much. We ordered a Salmon Roll for $9.50 and it was good. The sushi was great...three of us had 2 pieces of salmon ($6.75 each order) and 2 pieces of yellowtail ($7.50 each order). I had wanted an order of Ankimo sushi but they brought sashimi for $19.50; honestly, I didn't catch the mistake at the time but I certainly would have preferred the $7.50 charge for 2 pieces of sushi or even $11.75 for 3 pieces of sashimi. I mean, 5 pieces of monkfish liver for the only guy who would eat it is a bit much and I LIKE Ankimo....sushi.Our attentive server brought us free ice cream for my birthday which was a nice touch. Now, we ordered a lot and the bill was high for the 5 of us, in my opinion, especially with 1 non-fish eater and no booze. 3 of us ordered non-alcoholic drinks and the total with 20% tip was $306. One of the reasons we ordered so much is that my Mom (with memory issues) kept saying she had had only 2 pieces of sushi and she was still hungry. My kiddos quickly learned to also say that they had had only 2 pieces of sushi so they could get Grandma to order more. I had to put an end to this rather quickly but we were stuffed when we left.Bottom line: Great sushi, service and ambiance at standard (yet high for me) prices.Rock bottom line: We'll definitely be back next time this home sushi chef (ME) needs a break. lol"

Duke C. "Shabu on a cold night really hits the spot and this is a solid spot for it.I'm a fan of the Prime Ribeye. There's also US and Japnese wagyu. Since normally I go with the konbu soup base, which is really mild, the ribeye has enough beef flavor while also giving me the fatty bite I want. The veggies are the standard ones you get for shabu spots. You can order ramen on the side and it seems like a lot do, but the included rice is enough for us. Sauce-wise you get to grind your own sesame seeds or the sesame sauce. Ponzu is the weak one for us out of the two - a bit too one dimensional. For the apps, we really like the squid legs kaarage. Typical beer and sake selection. Prices have been slowly creeping up like most places. We usually come on weeknights so it tends to be somewhat emptier. Service's solid and food comes out fast as well."
