We were visiting with folks in the area and told there was yet another new Mexican restaurant in town--The Patron. That makes, I think, 5 (!) Mexican restaurants in a town of just under 20K folks. So what makes The Patron different? Not sure. There are other good Mexican restaurants in town of course, so I checked the menu to see if there was anything different to make this place stand out. There are a few interesting items, if not entirely different styles (some street taco and torta options would be cool and make them unique, but I didn't see those). I did see that one of their signature dishes was a Molcajete Mexicano, served in a big hot volcano stone molcajete bowl so I opted for that as my entree. It was really good--hot, fresh, well seasoned, large (but not ridiculous) servings. The chicken, chorizo, and shrimp were excellently cooked though the ribeye was a tad overdone. Rice and peppers and a good tomatillo sauce made for a great meal, add some tortillas and toppings on the side and I was set. Everyone I dined with enjoyed their meals as well. However, we all agreed that the chips and salsa could use some work. I'm not sure if they mix in new chips with the previous day's leftover chips or what, but about every fourth or fifth chip we ate was stale. The red salsa is totally unflavored--no spice, no heat, no complexity. Tasted like tomato puree. The jalapeno ranch dip was pretty great, however. If you've eaten at a Chuy's it is very comparable to their signature dip. Lastly, our table was rickety and tilted every time we shifted. So--promising food with a few dishes you can't get at the competition in town, what looked to be decent drink prices, a good ranch jalapeno dip contrasted by chips and salsa that need work and a bit of overall maintenance that could help brighten things up.

We eat here at least every couple weeks. Service is always friendly and efficient. They have a wide variety of entrees to choose from on the menu. Prices are extremely reasonable. They serve a jalapeño ranch dip with the free chips and salsa. Worth the trip just for the ranch dip!!

Walking into The Patron we were greeted by quiet Mexican music and friendly staff. The decor is appropriately Mexican, down to the onyx veneered table tops. The lighting is a bit bright for an evening dinner venue and the the wall-mounted TV (why?) were a little distracting at times. Otherwise, the ambiance was as one would expect. The complimentary salsa that appeared to be primarily pureed tomatoes with minimal spices/herbs. Also provided was a mysterious, slightly gelatinous white dip. It didn't have much taste, although it did have a moderately spicy kick. We guessed that it might be mayo with something to make it a bit spicy. We didn't eat much of that after the first bite. Vegetable fajitas were served piping hot with a nice assortment of vegetables including bell pepper, onion, mushrooms, fresh asparagus and broccoli, thinly sliced potatoes, baby carrots, and zucchini - not all the typical "bag of frozen vegetables" that masquerades as veggie fajitas at many Mexican restaurants, though the carrots could have spent a little longer on the grill. This writer ordered the Chicken Fajita Salad but forgot to ask that the cheese sauce mentioned on the menu be omitted. I am not fond of the semi-plastic orange goo that many Mexican restaurants barely warm up out of the can. I was delighted to discover that the "cheese dip" was a very light sauce (more like a warm salad dressing) and worked well with the grilled chicken, peppers, onions, and iceberg lettuce. Unfortunately, the lettuce had wilted a little under the hot chicken, veggies, and sauce - not terrible, but not quite as good as it could have been.In summary, the chips, etc. got 2.5 stars, the veggie fajitas and chicken fajita salad were better than average and earned 4 stars each. We had a good experience and will be back. The Patron is far superior to other local Mexican restaurants.

Food was good Mexican food. Not the best I have had but decent for a small town. They had a special 2 for 1 margarita. The drinks are not that great. Mostly margarita mix with very little tequila. Staff was friendly and were attentive to me. Not a bad spot for a small town, but would stay away from the margarita specials and order a better quality drink.

This place is incredible. My wife and I go at least once a week. They have a $5.99 lunch special that is so delicious and the portions are so large. We don't know how they can offer such large and delicious portions at such a low price. My wife and I would strongly recommend everyone to give it a try. The staff is very friendly and welcoming.
