Just moved to the area and was excited to find an Indian restaurant in the area. Decided to give the place a try and it was a great experience. There was some kind of event happening at the time, which made the place very loud and lively, but we were seated right away. The staff were all very friendly and we had multiple people come by to check on us throughout our visit. With the event going on, there were kids running around the restaurant being pretty rambunctious and loud. The menu was pretty extensive but we decided to try some simple dishes for a first visit. Chicken mushroom, chicken biryani and peshawari nan.Everything came out fairly quickly. The dishes were the right temperature, super flavorful, moist and the sauce was delicious. I was worried about spices and the chicken mushroom was not spicy. The peshwari nan was moist and really good with the nuts and fruits, I could have eaten that by itself. Crisp and chewy and just really good. We ended the meal with gulab jamun which was syrupy sweet and moist. The price was reasonable at just over $40 and it was a wonderful dining experience.

Came on a Monday evening so there was no wait at all. Sat ourselves as directed and was quickly greeted. Food was amazing! The fish came out fast and was a great snack while we waited on our entrees. While we were sitting we could hear commotion from the kitchen which sounded like arguing but it didn't concern us so we just chatted but it brought attention to how quiet the restaurant was. No music or audio to drawn out personal conversations. The tvs were later cut on. Dinner came and we tore it up! Got full half way through and took the rest to go. I'm in love with Indian cuisine and will definitely be back, sitting farther away from kitchen!

Indian cuisine is one of my favorites and since living in Bangalore I have a different look on restaurants here. I always find myself comparing which sometimes isn't fair. Taj did not disappoint on any level. The staff was extremely friendly and the dining room was very clean.I sat down and took a look at the menu and decided to go with my two litmus tests. Gobi Manchurian and a chicken makhani, both ordered medium hot with a couple butter naan. The food arrived quickly and hot. I tackled the gobi first. It was by far hands down the best gobi Manchurian I've had since I left India. Not too much sauce, crispy fry on the cauliflower and had that sweet tangy spicy flavor that was phenomenal. The portion size was fantastic. Every bite was sensational. Then I moved to the makhani. Again the flavor was amazing. Creamy and rich, not watery at all which is the usual problem. The spice level was fantastic and the medium hot was right around a standard Indian level The chicken pieces were plentiful and the portion was a standard copper bowl size. The naan also was impressive. Definitely made in house in their tandoor. Not thick and doughy but slightly crisp but pliable. Absolutely perfect to tear apart and eat the Mikhano. This is definitely my go to spot in Lexington when I visit.Well done to the staff, chef and owner for great experience. If you are hesitant to try Indian food for the first time, make this your spot and you'll be hooked for life.https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g39588-d1085377-r949126252-Taj_India_Indian_Restaurant-Lexington_Kentucky.html#

Looking Out For The City ..

Wow. I have not been here in so long, but it really looks like they did a lot to the place. I came here because I wanted to try some Lamb Curry. I had to order in person because last weekend, I tried calling in and ordering online, and neither of those options worked. I decided not to order because my mind went to eating something else. Instead, I decided to come in person. When I was looking through the menu online, I noticed that they had Limca and Thums Up. GUYS....guys. These drinks are only sold in India (maybe somewhere in the U.S., I highly doubt it). Man, nostalgia. So when I went on trips to India with my parents, when I was younger, I had always seen drinks like Limca, not really Thums Up. This will be my first time drinking a Thums Up. If I had to suggest a beverage, I would suggest these. It is just because you cannot get them in the states. It is like going to a Mexican restaurant and getting a Mexican Coca Cola or a Jarritos.I also like how when I ordered the Lamb Curry, they gave me free rice with it. How cool is that? Bonus! It is like ordering ribs from Johnny Carino's and receiving a baguette with dipping sauce. --------------------------------------------------------------I went back to try some goat curry today and I found that the gal with the white cap did not honor a discount card I received from the owner, many years ago. She did yesterday; however, not today. She seemed to make up the pricing. Goat curry is posted to be $16.99 on the website, but she put the price down as $18 flat, which with sales tax of 6% should be $18.01Yesterday, I had the discount card and I was charged $18.12. This was a combined price from when I had ordered lamb curry $15.99 on their menu and with Thums Up, a beverage for $2.99. The discount (I think she gave me 10%, even though it clearly states 15% for take out). So $15.99+2.99 = 18.98-1.898 = 17.082. Now the sales tax is 6%. So $17.08 x 0.06 = $18.11If I presented the same discount card today and I did not buy a beverage, it should have been $16.99 x 0.10 = $1.699, 16.99-1.699 = $15.291 x 6% (+ 0.917) = $16.20Suggestion: Check your receipts because they do not itemize them. It is just one flat amount. Also, it would help if they put some sort of bell or something at the entrance. It does not help if people have to walk up and disturb other dining guests just to get customer service.Edit: I may consider leaving pricing alone. It seems like they gave me more goat curry by volume than lamb curry. Almost like three times the amount. Google states that goat is more expensive than lamb though? Weird.

Went there for lunch and it was just sorta "meh". They were doing some remodeling and there was NO ONE else there, so maybe they didn't have their heart in it. But the food was "meh", service was "meh" (which should have at least been better since there were no other patrons), and the ambiance was pretty roughy (although, as I said, they were remodeling, so maybe it'll get better....but the play looked rough).

This place has consistently impressed me over the years. The food is out of this world. Years ago, my oldest daughter brought me here... and I have loved it... every single visit is perfect. I highly recommend this place, great food, great employees, great owner. If you wish to "try something new and out of your comfort zone"... this is your new place. I hope Taj India remains here for many, many more years!

Chicken Vindaloo is the best! I live out of town so don't get it as often as I would like but it's really great.

Would not visit again. Tried a few dishes - likely the worst Indian food I have ever had. Service was fine, nothing notable. Decor was odd and outdated - all the tables have an article from over 10 years ago...
