Just visited this bourbon gem for the first time last week. The staff and owner are gracious, knowledgeable people. I got to sample an Old Elk store pick that had just arrived. I listened to the owner, Amin, describe the tasting notes and nose, then I tried it for myself. Loved it so much I bought two bottles. The store carries bourbons in all price points, from the more common finds to the unicorns. The unicorns are, of course, pricey, but that's how the bourbon game goes. I bought an OWA for $99, and I was okay with that price point for a bourbon I've wanted to add to my collection. Overall, I had a great experience and got to meet other bourbon lovers. I'll definitely be coming back on the regular.

Not too shabby.I was staying in the Old Louisville area, house- and dog-sitting for an extended time. One friday while there, we wanted to chill at the house playing games and sipping on some wine, rather than going out and spending too much money. We also didn't want to get back in a car...it was just too nice outside and if we could acquire a bottle of wine or two on foot in the neighborhood, even better!I drive by Red Castle on a regular basis on my way to and from work, so I suggested we pay them a visit. Also, the other nearby stores were already closed for the evening and it wasn't even that late. Still light out, even! After walking in, I asked the man at the counter about white wine options. He opened the gate and invited us back to look at what was in stock. They have a great beer and liquor selection, fewer options in the wine department. But they had a few in the style we were interested in, and for the same price as my home neighborhood liquor store. So we grabbed a couple bottles, paid, and were in an out in maybe 5 minutes. Back outside and walking home in the lovely weather. A pretty decent liquor store, servicing a beautiful neighborhood, with friendly staff and a good selection. You could certainly do worse.

We were in town for a guys trip weekend to Louisville and stayed at a nearby Airbnb. Went to Red Castle for some beer and ended up staying in the store for over an hour. Amine (owner) was so accommodating. He has a very deep knowledge of bourbon and other liquors. I ended up buying alot of bourbon from him to take home based on his recommendations. None of them has disappointed! But it was also just a fun place to spend a few minutes. The store has a cast of regular patrons that come in to visit and it feels like a great neighborhood meeting spot. Amine is a really great guy and it seems like the folks in the neighborhood appreciate his hospitality when they visit his store. Sounds crazy, but I went back to the store to hang out for a bit every night of the trip, and for me it was one of the highlights of the trip. Highly recommend a visit to Red Castle and if you are in luck you will get to meet Amine and spend a few minutes learning about bourbon.

While in Louisville (for lunch) I was looking for some place to get my growler filled. All of my favorite local brewerys are either closed on Mondays or don't open until 4 or 5 through the week. Against The Grain was open, but according to their on line beer list, they didn't have anything I wanted. I started Googling Louisville growler fills while eating pizza at The Post. Red Castle came up. I had never heard of Red Castle, but we were within a few blocks of it so I thought what the heck, I might as well stop by. First impression upon walking in was: I wish I had a conceal carry permit and was packing! Seriously, I felt a little intimidated by everything being behind a glass wall and having to talk and order through a little window. However, all's well that ends well. They only had 4 taps available but I was interested in two of them. The cashier never mentioned one tap I recognized, Bells Oberon. When I said I was interested in the Bells, he said it wasn't showing on his list. He grabbed a plastic cup, filled it a third full and handed it to me. After I tried it, he asked if that was what I thought it was. I told him it certainly was, and asked the price for a growler. He replied he would give it to me for $10.99. Considering just last week I paid $15 for a growler at Gordon Biersch, and Oberon usually cost a little more than other craft drafts, I thought what a deal. Needless to say I am now a proud owner of 64 ounces of Bells Oberon. I doubt I'll be making a special trip to Red Castle, but when in the area I will stop to see what's available.

If you're in Louisville and looking for a great selection, please do yourself a favor and stop here! The bourbon game is at an all time high and EVERY outlet has bottles marked up, that's unavoidable, but at least here it was some of the lowest I've seen. For example, a bottle of George T. Stagg was $699, which in itself is crazy, but literally one mile down 1st street at another establishment GTS started at $999.While I don't agree with gouging, it's happening across America. At Redcastle the selection was small, but high quality and the employees were super helpful and friendly! It's worth a quick trip because you'll never know what you might find and you'll meet some great people while you're there!
