Let me say I've been to many vets, and I left my old vet to come here because it was so wonderful. But I'll start at the beginning.Me and the boyfriend needed to find a place to bring our bearded dragons. Not too many places treat exotics and those that sometimes do have no clue what they're doing...at all. Well when I called them the lady on the other end on the phone not only gave me a price quote at the time but even told me some things I could do for our beardie so I wouldn't have to bring her in. Yes. They give health advice over the phone just because they care about the animal. They never want you to spend more money or try to suck money from you. They are also how I discovered care credit so I'll never have to worry about my pets during an emergency. Anyways we brought our first bearded dragon to penny royal and never have I seen her treated with so much respect. Everyone thought she was so cute. Wanted to pet her, not your typical response for a lizard. They ran a poop float and gave her a full physical and found out she had giardia. We got her meds and later brought our other beardie. She was free of that but found out she had a tape worm. They didn't have medicine on hand to treat that being they'd never seen it before in a bearded dragon so they had medicine specially made for her. Was wonderful. Truly wonderful. They also treated her great. Heehee they have a heating pad for them to lay on to get them to relax. I believe my scale babies wanted to take it home.A time later I worried about my pembroke welsh corgi, he's eight and hasn't been to a good vet in so long. I came into some money and quite dramatically told them to run every test they could. He'd been breathing strangely, almost like a asthma attack. And limping on one leg. The vet techs were great, the vet who is the same woman for our lizards got on the ground and loved on him. And she knew exactly what was wrong with him and told me how to treat it and that he was fine. A reverse sneeze is what it is. They did blood work and X-rays. He has arthritis in his right leg but other than that healthy. I was so relieved I cried. Before we left a tech came out and asked if we had questions. She answered everything. Even things I forgot to ask the vet about. Told me things I could buy elsewhere or things I could do. I couldn't appreciate it enough. And on a non health note, we brought my new puppy who is also a corgi. She was a very spirited thing at only 8 weeks old but had behavior problems. Techs told me what to do, how to stop it, advice...them the vet told me some things as well. She got her other boosters and shots and of course she got many cuddles and pets. Now after doing what they told me to do and of course her growing up (now 4 months old) she is wonderful. Please bring your babies here.

I've been bringing my dog here for over 2 years and have consistently been happy with the care. Dr. Gravatte in particular is top-notch. You can tell he really cares about your pet. Most importantly, I've never felt pressured or guilted into high-cost procedures.I recommend this place to all my pet-owning friends.

Dr. Lacki and the entire staff are friendly, professional, informative and patient. At no time did I feel rushed and I very much appreciated the time Dr. Lacki spent explaining to this lay person the nature of the problem.

I can't say enough about this clinic. They are so compassionate and thorough. I have 4 pets I take to them and they do an amazing job. I also love the fact they offer at home services upon request. Very accommodating and caring facility. Highly recommend!

I hate nothing more than someone treating me like I don't know how to care of my pets! I took my exotic pet in for a simple eye issue that just needed some meds. I filled out the extensive information sheet on my pet, and then later was asked again about each question and the answer I put. And even some questions then got follow up questions, as if the answer I gave was not good enough. None of which could even have anything to do with the problem my pet was in there for. I was happy with the care my pet received while in there. And they were good about calling a couple times later to follow up on how he was doing

I've never written a negative review on this platform, but this one deserves to be the first. My son has a veiled chameleon who was sleeping with his head raised up which can be an issue at times. We found PR online and called to explain the situation. The person on the phone acted like our chameleon was basically near death and we needed to rush in for an appt. But, before we could schedule they required an over the phone payment of $65. I've never had this with any other vet, or other business for that matter. We were told this would be refunded if cancelled 24 hrs out. We paid the fee, scheduled an appt, then called other exotic pet vets. Found 2 more nearby with good reviews who were both less dramatic about the situation and more than happy to set appointments without charging prior to meeting. My wife called back the following day (prior to the 24 hr window) to cancel our appointment. When she asked for the refund she was told they will not refund her card but instead mail a check. A week passed and no check. My wife called to inquire and was told the check was sitting on the desk and would go out that day. Another week passed, still no refund. She called again and this time told "we send groups of refund checks every few weeks. Yours will go out soon." Another week, no check. This time I drove to the office and was met by a woman (Donna Ross, office manager) who turned very defensive when I mentioned I was there to inquire about our refund. She curtly stated it was sent out two days prior so go home and it should be in our mailbox in the next day or two. Another week passed and still no refund. I returned to the office again and was met by a sweet girl in the front. I explained why I was there and she went to get Donna Ross. I could hear their conversation in her office including her complaining about the fact that I was back. When she approached, there was no pleasantries, no "I'm sorry this has taken so long". Instead she just snapped, "I told you I mailed the check and since I can't control the mail you're just gonna have to wait it out. If we get it back I'll call you". Very rude, very unprofessional. At this point we were at 30 days from our original call and charge. I asked them to write me a check and cancel the other. She told me she couldn't and I would have to talk to the doctor if I wanted to wait. Which I did.Eventually Tim Gravatte approached to discuss. I'll spare the lengthy details, but have an audio file if anyone would like to listen. Long story short, this guy was just as unprofessional as the first. Our only crime in this situation was setting an appt with this place, paying the charge they insisted upon, then requesting a refund as they said they would do when no services were rendered. We were basically treated as a hostile witness throughout this whole experience, as if we had wronged them in some way. It was quite strange actually. There was never an apology or really even human decency with any of the interactions. Mr. Gravatte refused to write a check and just kept repeating if the refund doesn't arrive in another 2 weeks I would need to drive back over to the office and then he would write me a check. So at this point, I feel like we should charge them for our time we have wasted on this ridiculous scenario. Terrible experience and still no refund. On the bright side, our chameleon is healed and doing well thanks to another vet who was professional, pleasant, and definitely someone I would return to. Penny Royal Vet on the other hand is a place I would definitely recommend to stay far away from. I have since talked with others who have had similar experiences as mine. Proceed with caution.

This is an amazing group of animal experts who are very patient and friendly with both humans and animals. Admittedly, I am not the brightest, and everyone was very patient with my lack of knowledge. I have moved from the area, and miss this group; yet, Dr.Gravatte's Mobile Vet Waggin inspired me to seek a mobile Veterinarian working with an animal hospital in my new location. 5 stars for Pennyroyal Small & Exotic Animal Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

Both Dr. Tim and Dr Lacki are excellent, well-trained, very professional--and unquestionably, compassionate, affectionate animal lovers. Between them they've cared for our cats for more than ten years. They are now dealing with out third cat, the other two having died in old age of medical problems incident to have been rescued as unwell kittens years ago. Pennyroyal is the 16th veterinary hospital I've dealt with in 9 states during the past 60 years, and the 4th here in Lexington. They are, of those 16, by far the best. They helped us to find a vet who could do an MRI on their first of our cats, and a pharmacy to formulate a medicine that we could apply easily for their second of our cats, and an animal acupuncturist who gave one of our girls an extra year of comfortable life. They've helped us enormously with their third of our cats, who had a rough time transitioning from being abondoned to having a home again. Would that our (human) physicians were so competent and determined to fix whatever is wrong with us when we're sick!P.S. Tammy C., don't let small children pets cats who don't know them, or they're liable to get scratched!

When my chinchilla got sick earlier this year, we took him to Pennyroyal several times. They took really, really good care of him. He was so happy every time he was there, and the techs made over him and cuddled him and obviously really liked him. He did end up dying after several weeks, but it was in no way their fault; he just kept losing weight no matter how much we fed him. A few days later, we got a sympathy card with personal comments about Chico from everyone who had worked with him there. It meant so much to me. I'm tearing up just thinking about it.Chico wasn't the first pet I've taken to Pennyroyal, and he certainly won't be the last. They made a very sad and difficult situation a lot more bearable.

I have taken my littlest bird here Tiki for 2 years now and was pleased with the out come except this last visit. I have owned birds all of my life and when I lived back home I had another vet in my home town that I took my other pet bird to that died from old age years ago that lived a long life. Any time it was sick the vet just didnt look at and send it home with antibiotics they did a full check up. Last time I took Tiki to Penny Royal she had a tale bob and breathing heavy. To a bird lover.... you know its a respitory infection when its bad enough for a tale bob. 1st visit she was prescribed antibiotics and made 100% recovery! This time hasnt been the same. I called the emergency line Wednesday night that is suppose to be open 24 hours a day and no one called me back until 7:30 the next morning... Opening time. She said sorry and something must have been wrong with the line, they would get it checked into. I took the next appointment open and took Tiki in. They weighed her and listened to her heart and sent her home with antibiotics again. This 2nd time she wasn't as bad no tail bob just breathing heavy and lethargic so I caught it before it got bad like before as I've had birds before and know how serious their health will decline in just a few days. I gave her antibiotics as soon as I got home. The next day (Saturday) I noticed she was having trouble walking with a limp and called the emergency line that day...no call back. She got worse later as I noticed she was having trouble staying on the pole and this time her feet were turned under like a person paralyzed. Called Saturday night 2 times... No call back. Called Sunday one last time as I thought to myself, "I already called Saturday day and night 3 times and never got a call back so most likely wouldn't get a call back Sunday but made the phone call anyway to the emergency line and waited until Monday and called as soon as I got up. They told me they would call me back as soon as the vet came in at 8:30, but says they are open at 7:30. She said we are but they don't get here until 8:30. At 9:00 I got a call. Made an appointment for that day finally. I told both desk women about my experiences in calling the 24 hour emergency line and one of them said that the vet called me back at 9 and tried until 10 but my phone was busy. Soooo.... she should have called back since I had called 3 times prior to that 4th time. That's 4 times in 2 days. The people that work there are very friendly and they seem to really care. I was just unhappy with the emergency line that is suppose to be 24 hours and its clearly not or not working properly which if it was my bird may not have gotten worse. Hope this review helps any future bird lovers get through and get a call back in a respectable time because this a nice place to take your bird to and the only one in Lexington as well. I just dont agree with paying another doctor visit of any kind but was told I would have to anyway by one of the desk women. if I had got her back in there 2 days ago when I called on Saturday she wouldn't have been this sick but they are very professional and nice there I know they will take care of her. I'm just looking at spending another office visit on top of suggested x rays. The xrays are over $100.00 it self and if she was checked out properly the first time I wouldn't have to pay a 2nd time for a doctor visit. She wasn't even as bad as the 1st time I took her with a tail bob just breathing hard and lethargic. I just wish the emergency line was as it is suppose to be. Its not ok for me or any other client with a sick bird to wait 2 days before a call back on a emergency line. The line said it was for established avain clients with emergency only. To get a call back last night after calling 2 days only to be told later by one if the desk ladies that next day they did try to call from 9 to 10 but phone was busy. I had been calling for 2 days and stated my bird was getting worse. They should have called back especially after I called 3 times the day before and 1 more time the night they called back. Wednesday when I didnt get call back they should have looked into fixing what ever the problem was then.
