I think all members of our kids team were first-timers with indoor this winter. Most had played in various outdoor leagues previously, though. We have enjoyed having something soccer-related in the cold season overall. I like also that they now have "free agent" sign-ups, which allows kids to register as individuals, not as a group. Some kids don't have a team yet, so this feels more inclusive. They should perhaps also find a way to have teams check off whether they can take on a free agent player or not. Some may have space for more. The refs have been fair and professional. What is hard to adjust to is how rushed I feel to get our kids on the field, onto our bench, and then immediately rushed off the field the second the final buzzer sounds. They really pack their schedule tight for maximum profit, so even 10 min of warm-up prior to the game is the exception, not the norm. I believe that team managers aren't very forthcoming about whether their kids are recreational or select team players. This results in very skewed matches because some teams are essentially stacked while others are made up of purely recreational players. I'm not sure how that's enjoyable or instructional for these select coaches and players! I'm also not sure how KY Indoor can better vet these teams and correctly place them in appropriate leagues. Our child's comment sums it up: "It's harder than playing our toughest team in outdoor. But it's fun." So I can just hope our kids are learning from playing these stars. Overall I think we still find outdoor to be much more rewarding, but glad with indoor we are getting some soccer in during the long winter hiatus.
