Equus and Jack's Lounge

Fantastic atmosphere, bar area, dining area, hidden speakeasy & a cozy leather couch seating area to mingle, drink & eat also. Very inviting. It's the kind of 'Cheers' locals place where the servers & bartenders remember the creatures of habit, same Old Fashioned w/ two cherries & how they like their steak cooked. Love it!I love the 'Perfect Nachos,' each chip individually topped w/ seasoned beef, jalapeño, cheese, guac, sour cream, Pico & hot sauce. Perfect way of making Nachos so in every bite you get all of the toppings. I am not a huge Nachos fan, but would order this app everytime. Crispy Calamari was also a good choice w/ the squeeze of lemon. Next time, I look forward to staying for dinner. Every plate looked savory & afterwards, at the bar, plates were completely empty.

Equus and Jack's lounge is a very nice upscale saint Mathews neighborhood of Louisville eatery and lounge area. Me and my whole family made a trip here last week to this popular establishment for dinner. We were lucky enough to come in and grab a inside table immediately. The decor and lighting In Here is very elegant and intimate. The workers all here were super nice, attentive and on top of things. We started of with two appetizers for our large family of 6. We got some perfect nachos and calamari. The calamari came out first and it was top notch. Very good calamari with nice zesty breading and great flavor. One of the top calamari we have had in Lousiville. The perfect nachos came out next and once again was very good. I loved how the toppings were on individual chips and dressed instead of just a pile that you pull from. So every chip has the same amount of flavor and it was easy to share which is idea for an appetizer. For our entree I personally went with Pasta Bolognese. It was pretty good dish. I had to stir it up quite a bit to get all the meats and pasta at the right blend but it was pretty good. Very filling too. My oldest daughter Pimento cheese and ham jam burger and was huge fan. She loved it. My second oldest daughter for the Jack's thin crust pizza and it was massive. Also very good. It was one of the best pizzas she said she has had. I tasted it and it was in fact very good. I wasn't expecting much from the looks but it packed great flavor and the wood fire burned cheese was a good touch. My wife ordered a fried chicken and said it was pretty good. She kinda wished they didn't put the fried chicken on top the mashed potatoes. She isn't a huge fan of her foods touching and was surprised because usually upscale places don't do that. But she said it was still outstanding and she loved both apps. Overall we had a great experience. Great apps and good. Good service and a very nice and laid back atmosphere at this location. This was our first trip but it seems like we will be back. The calamari and pizza for me and my daughters would be worth the trip alone.

My first time here and I must say, the ambience transported me to a calm, carefree destination in my mind.I had the perfect nachos, without cheeses or spicy elements (due to my dietary restrictions) and they were still delicious. The entire staff was pleasant and accommodating.After I ate, I sat and read my book for well over an hour. Will most definitely be returning here!

Another true gem of St Matthews. I'm not a kale fan. But I am now after having this dish! The fried chicken was cooked perfectly - not greasy, not dry.... Just prepared perfectly. I see why it's been a staple on their menu. The kale is the perfect side with the chicken and mashed. A true bite of chicken with kale dipped in mashed potatoes with gravy. Amazing! Wedge salad was very good! Dressing was perfect. Cannot wait to try more from the menu!

I honestly don't know where to begin! The ambience? The food? The service? All were excellent, mind blowing! I had the short rib with mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. The short ribs were very tender and flavorful, the gravy and mashed potatoes pushed me further into cuisine Heaven. And the brussel sprouts, 'oh my God! Now that I think about it my husband devoured the Kale and he never eats vegetables. As a cook himself he was surprised to see vegetables almost steal the show. He had the fried chicken, which was so juicy and crispy. Perfection! The gravy added a unique flavor. He substituted the mashed potatoes with the cheese grits and described the switch as genius. The idea to celebrate my Birthday here was genius. Plus the free birthday dessert (carrot cake) was amazing. The service was on point and the drinks were wonderful on the speak easy side. All in all so much bang for your buck! Fine dining without fine dining prices. This place is an experience with great cuisine. One of the best dining experiences in Louisville.

So... I went back to Equus & Jack's lounge yesterday evening and I must say. I really enjoy the atmosphere and the food. I once again sat at the bar and the service Carey provided was above and beyond. If you have not enjoyed a meal at the bar I highly recommend it. Carey might as well be a bartender at Cheers, no matter who walked in, he knew their name and their drink! Every. Single. Person! This was only my second time and he remembered me. I felt at home and if it I was part of his daily bar crew. I intentionally made myself order something different from my last visit so I could provide additional feedback. This time I ordered the wings for my appetizer and I ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The winds were awesome - the hot sauce was the perfect combination or heat and flavor and the actual chicken wings (flats and drumettes) were meaty with low fat and they were juicy with the skin still slightly crunchy under the sauce. I should have stopped halfway but the wings were so good I at them all! The fried chicken was a fried chicken breast - you have got to trust me when I say this may be the best fried chicken I have ever had at a restaurant in Louisville! Let me tell you about this chicken! The chicken skin and batter was extremely crunchy and the flavor of the fried skin was a perfect blend of spices and grease - lastly the chicken itself was extremely juicy. The mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy - unfortunately the mashed potatoes were still bland AF but just like last time Cary provide me a little ramekin full of specific spices I requested and the potatoes were perfection. The Brussels Sprouts were divine! I think that bake and then flash fry them and top them with Parmesan cheese. I love these. I could literally eat these every day and never get tired of them they are so good. This is going to be my new spot! From now own whenever I return home, I will eat here at least once during my time home!

My first visit. Great cocktails and small bites with a crisp riesling white wine complimented tasty tender calamari dressed in slightly spicy sauce with wedge Fresh lemon. Service was a friendly a kind face who was attentive. Dining menu offered many options, as well as outdoor dinner for larger groups. Soft lighting mature chill vibe just right for a romantic date evening. Many seating choices. Comfortable couch's with table service. Amenities abound. Parking is lot on the small side. Highly recommend.

The ambiance here is super nice and my shrimp and grits were great! We celebrated a party of 10 here and the restaurant was able to accommodate.I will definitely be back in the future. Great intimate date night place.

Sooo my friends took me here after I got stood up for a date and this place did not disappoint. I love the cozy feeling but also it gives an old money scene. The wait staff was prompt and very personable. I would def keep in mind if you're going for a date or important business meeting. The menu seems a little limited and I got a burger because I'm very plain Jane but it's an elevated bar menu... kind of

I had an absolute blast at Equus Jacks. The environment is dark, quiet, and relaxing. They have an outdoor space too where they have a band or two perform. We started off with nachos and ordered shrimp cocktails, calamari, and finished off with chicken poutine. Don't hate on equus jacks for what I am about to say, but nothing beats Midwest/Northern poutine. It was still enjoyable but reminded me of the superiority of Northern Poutine. Have to give EJ credit, only place in the city where I would order it again. Overall the drinks were great, bourbon list was respectable, and there's a secret I am not going to share here. There's something unique about this lounge and I'll be heading back several times to investigate. I'm grateful the staff took the time to show me and talked through the awesome perks associated with this kept secret. Check it out!
