"Consistently great food and service at an excellent price. Chips and salsa are always delivered in a timely manner, as are beverages. Food is prepared quickly and hot. All the employees are friendly and personable. This is my favorite Mexican lunch spot."
"So yummy! I'm from CA where we have plenty of access to quality, authentic Mexican food and this place reminds me of home. Super yummy and excellent customer service. The restaurant is small and was pretty quiet when we visited. We will definitely be going back!"
"One thing about eastern Kentucky is that there are a ton of Mexican restaurants. I know, random. But, in all honesty, I love the Mexican food they serve in EKY. It's very unauthentic and everything is covered in queso. It's delicious!El Azul Grande is a great place to check out for Mexican food in the area. The service is friendly and quick, and the food is good. They have great salsa, strong margaritas, and a dish called Pollo Bandido which is chicken, rice, and beans all covered in cheese and served with tortillas. It's great! If you find yourself in EKY and you're looking for a good spot to grab a meal, El Azul Grande is definitely a great place to check out."
"Mi Hacienda is a great spot for lunch or dinner in this area. The restaurant options in the area are fairly limited, and this is one of the only spots where you can sit down for a meal, so I definitely recommend checking it out if you're looking for a nice dinner option. Plus, this spot has a full bar! That's not something you'll find anywhere else in the area, so it's really your best option if you're looking to have a cocktail or beer with your meal. If you're in the area, and looking for a lunch or dinner spot, I definitely recommend Mi Hacienda!"
"This is THE place to get great food at a family owned business. We go there once a week because it's that good and affordable. Get any of their authentic Mexican food or try the eggs Benedict. Or the Diablo pasta, or a burger."
"Had nothing but great meals, drinks and service here. Staff is friendly. Lots of seating and parking. Easy on and off the interstate. Tray the southern fried Tacos. Love the corn in the cob."
"It is very convenient to the Marshall campus and caters to that business. It is the best of the close to campus restaurants we have tried. Good selection of basic food. Pretty plain ambiance. Food was good and reasonably priced though not spectacular. Lots of choices. Service was solid. I would go back."
"Local restaurant, nothing fancy, fried chicken was some of the best I have had along with the broccoli."
"The Local Taco is truly a staple of Lexington, KY - I went to school at UK until 2018 and I swear this is the place that everyone loves and also the place you have your parents take you when they come in to visit you at school. The food is always good and fresh and the staff is always kind as well! Along with good food, I like that you order at the counter, take a number, and seat yourself. They have an option to sit indoors or on the patio which I also love. I had the great pleasure of returning to The Local Taco today and I ordered the Triple Crown Cheese Enchilada which I've never had before and I LOVED it. I also got a side of rice and raja salsa with chips. As always, I loved my meal and left with a full stomach and smile across my face. Thank you, The Local Taco, for being tried and true for me and so many others! Can't wait to be back as always!"
"Told the cashier it was our first time and he gave us recommendations along with a choice of free quac or queso. We chose queso. Very good but I loved the salsa best. Cashier recommended Birria and Baja Fish tacos which I got along with Vaca Frita. My friend got shrimp taco and bourbon taco. Everything was delicious and portions were HUGE. We only managed to eat one full taco and took bites of the others. My friend's favorite was the Birria which didn't have enough spice for me but was tasty. Vaca Frita and both seafood tacos had some kick. I loved the Vaca Frita but wished I'd gotten the bourbon taco as well which tasted like barbecue and had corn and cojita cheese. Staff was very friendly and great. I don't usually tip when I order counter service but I did here. Place was clean and patio looked nice but a little too warm out when we went."

We discovered Jalapeños thirty years ago and at that time it was hands down the best Mexican restaurant in Lexington. Absolutely authentic, amazing food and consistent quality. We moved to the northern part of the state 25 years ago, but were able to enjoy a location there for several years until it closed. We missed it and could never find a suitable replacement. Now, decades later, we're still visiting the remaining location and enjoying the same great food, friendly atmosphere and service, and the same amazing authentic recipes as at the beginning. Jalapeños is a Lexington institution. All the others are just wannabes.

The other Yelp reviewer is right. I've eaten here countless times. It's almost a staple. Staples in a town this size may come easy (afterall, there aren't a ton of places to choose from) but this place is so good it deserves to be a staple in any sized town. The service is incredibly fast, even on busy nights (and they are busy every night, but you wont have to wait... they're great about that). I've gotten food so quickly that I've jokingly asked whether it was already prepared and sitting in the kitchen. I don't know how they get it so fast. It's always piping hot ("careful, hot plate!") so I doubt that it's pre-prepared. The chips are hot and fresh and delicious. The salsa is lacking.... it's basically tomato paste. The food is very good. My favorite dishes are the pollo bandido, fried chicken chimichangas, and the nachos supremos. They cover a lot of stuff in queso... which I love. If you are weary of it, you might ask for it on the side. The staff is so friendly and eager to please that, I bet, if you were able to describe to them what you wanted, they'd probably fix it for you. I've never tried it... but I've seen some very picky eaters order some very specific foods (ex. rice with cheese on instead of ordering a dish on the menu, sante fe chicken without the chicken).Once I noticed the window next to the cashier was cracked and had been taped up. It looked like a recent accident. As I was paying, I asked the cashier what happened. He looked at the cracked window, smiled a little and said "it's broken." I laughed and said that I could tell. He clearly didn't want to explain what happened. I thought it was funny.

I've been here a few times, only by default or because it was the only decent place in the area. It's never very busy... the times that I've been there.Service was ok, consists of mostly native Mexican males who only speak broke English to you and Spanish behind your back. I speak very little Spanish but I know that when I sent my cheese dip back because it wasn't warm, one said to another (the Spanish) that I was crazy. Today I ordered the lunch nachos and asked for no beef but they arrived with chicken, shrimp and beef. Because I ordered my cheese dip on the side, it looked quite plain. The waiter had asked if I wanted veggies at the time that I ordered and I said yes. The veggies, which gave the nachos an extra pep, didn't arrived until I was almost finished eating. Overall, it's ok place. I would recommend driving a bit out to Paintsville to find somewhere there to eat.

Soooo I am so confused by all these bad reviews. I loved this meal and I loved how fast it was. I has the Buffalo chicken quesadilla and chips and queso. Queso was bomb! Everyone and my table was thrilled with their meal. Even my nephew said he is driving down from PA any time he wants chicken fingers. Service was friendly and our food came out in like ten minutes. Interior was a Clean and family friendly place

I stopped into Calamity J for a bite and a drink after a Marshall basketball game. It wasn't too crowded so my friend and I sat at the bar.I started with the cheese soup, which the bartender said was a popular item, plus it was pretty cold outside. The soup included bacon and homemade croutons. The soup was hot and tasty, but I wish it wasn't so thick. I had a salad with grilled chicken as my main entree. The chicken was juicy and flavorful and the lettuce and tomatoes were fresh. I was very pleased with the salad! Service was good and I loved the restaurants vibe. I will definitely stop by again and try some other menu items.

"Some of the best Mexican food in the Ft Knox, hell, Louisville area. Super cozy place with friendly staff. Food is absolutely incredible, and I highly recommend the carnitas. The meat melts in your mouth. Drinks and food are fairly priced as well!"
"Went on the recommendation of a friend. It was good but could have been better. They charge for chips and salsa if you get a refill and didn't bother to tell me until I saw it on the check. The food was a bit overpriced IMO but the people were nice. Their English was very limited when trying to order. I would go back if in the area and friends wanted to go but won't make a special trip to see them."
"We didn't eat here except for chips and salsa. We had drinks. We shared the margarita sampler. Pineapple my favorite watermelon mango and spicy jalapeño and cucumber. My mouth was burning. The service was great and they were attentive"
"I eat here several times a month. Always good. Always consistent. For the most part, always packed. The service is always outstanding.Such a great addition to the Bloomfield community.A few tips:1) Try any of the bowls. All great.2) Pass on the fries.3) Try the ribeye sandwich. Really good."
"Service was slow to get started but once we ordered things went quick. The chips and salsa can't be beat. Frozen margaritas always delicious. Get The Oldtimer with cheese with everything. Perfection. Saturday night. Very busy but they persevered and we had a good time."
"My favorite Mexican place to eat... it's soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good!!!!!!Christian and junior are the best waiters"
"This is a chipotle copy which is good because there is no chipotle in the area. At first I was excited to see some fun meat options but it was all a little confusing. There was no guacamole either which is sad. It tasted good but it sat a little heavy on my stomach more than chipotle normally does. Also the salsa was really peppery like black pepper."
"Free chips and salsa. This is the only downtown Lexington Mexican restaurant with free chips and salsa, both of which are better than some places that charge for chips and salsa (like Agave and Rye). The other dishes are good for the price, like the tacos, fajitas, and rice bowls. Loved their margarita tower during the Halloween bar crawl!"
"I wanted to like this place cuz I love street tacos, but after two visits, I'm at 2 stars. Honestly I'd try any random Lexington taco truck before I went back here.Pricing is very fair at 4 or 5 tacos for $10. And they have a decent selection of meats and taco types. But the flavors are just ok, and some of the meats were very salty. Felt like an average, fast-food version of authentic Mexican food.Service was friendly but awkard. The windows are staffed by college girls who don't know much about the food. Not terrible, but Lexington has better spots.Update: all three people who shared in this meal last night have significant stomach problems today!"
"Clean place and the Cinco de Mayo Dip is the bomb!I The Margaritas are wonderful. Service is great. We've been coming here since they opened and we keep returning! I don't understand the negative reviews previously given. Makes me question their motives. Hmmm"
"La Sierra Mexican Restaurant is a hidden gem. This place is totally unassuming. It doesn't look like much at all from the outside. It's located in a strip mall, and honestly I wouldn't have paid it much attention if B's office wasn't nearby and he hadn't found it and taken me there. But, I'm so glad we discovered this spot, because it's really good! We started going here several years ago, when it was much smaller. Now they have expanded, and it is much more like a typical Mexican restaurant (with a store attached). The service is always quick and friendly, so this is a great spot to grab a workday lunch. Everything I have tried from the menu has been awesome. I usually opt for a burrito, and B goes for tacos. Everything is always hot and freshly prepared, and it's always really flavorful. No matter what you decide to try from the menu, you have to try the green jalapeño sauce. It's amazing! They bring it out to your table the way they bring out salsa, and I put it on everything. It's so delicious! It's not really spicy, it's just really flavorful, so it's a great addition to anything. If you're looking for a great, authentic, Mexican restaurant, look no further than La Sierra!"
"A solid 4 star restaurant! They're not perfect but pretty dang close! The decor really stands out as fresh, clean, ranch style. High ceilings, browns and blues, modern tile throughout- a really nice space! Weekday evening for dinner with the family was very good. The menu is HUGE, like, too huge. Took us forever to find a chimichanga on the menu but they have it indeed! Hubs got the chimichanga, I went with a Combo #1 with two enchiladas, one taco and rice. Kiddos split a cheese quesadilla and endless chips with salsa. Highly recommend also ordering the white cheese for dipping! It was delicious. The owner/manager personally came over to verify our coupon, $7 off two entrees. They're looking for the "Town Money Saver" stamp, so make sure to look it up before you head in! As far as prices, I think all the meals were well priced. We did not partake in alcohol since it was family night but the drinks passing us by looked large and yummy! I wouldn't say they're my favorite when it comes to salsa but it's pretty good. Enchiladas were perfect. Kiddos demolished the quesadilla and chips. We will definitely come back!"
"Locally owned by the nicest couple. I'm always impressed with the bravery when restaurant industry veterans take the leap of faith to start their own restaurant and build on their dreams. My friend and I both visited for the first time for lunch. We were the only ones here and I was shocked because they have a great menu with plenty of options. If you're around Florence or Burlington KY give them a try! The food is delicious and I hear the steaks are out of this world and locally sourced. Don't forget they serve lunch! Come on Northern KY, support local and enjoy great food and exceptional service while you do it."
"This restaurant is a hidden gem! The atmosphere is quaint with charming decor that creates a fun and inviting environment. The food is absolutely amazing--authentic Mexican flavors that truly stand out. The service is excellent, with a friendly and attentive staff that enhances the dining experience. Tucked away but well worth finding, this spot is a must-visit if you love Mexican cuisine. Highly recommend!"
"Different from your typical Mexican place. More modern. Delicious. We had a steak bowl and a carnitas bowl. Very good. They have tortas, burritos, and tacos and more. The self-serve salsa bar is a nice touch. I tried the mild. Delicious with a tangy hints of lime. We also ordered guacamole. Very chunky which I like but maybe a little too much red onion. Chips were delicious. Hubs got the Dos Equis dark on tap. They also have a self serve Pepsi fountain. Nice fun atmosphere with great service. Good prices too."
