Vegas Theatre Company

Went back to see Cluelesque again. So good!! ‍ Such a great theater. Easy to park, short walk, and great staff.

I attended an event today and it was being held in this building, Suite 155. There is quite a bit of parking for downtown's standards and it was easy and free. Quick walk inside and simple to get in and out of the lot. Grabbed some lunch nearby and walked into the event. The restrooms were clean and hallways are spacious. The event room was decent too and accommodated a large group. The ventilation did feel stuffy, but we had quite a few people. So maybe dress in layers, to be able to take one off, if needed.

We are avid community theater fans here in Las Vegas but had never been to the Vegas Theater Company. Well, now I know why this place has ZERO BUZZ. First the good. The ticket taker and staff I interacted with were super friendly upon arrival. Now the rest. This was an absolutely terrible production. Seriously save your money for quality theater. The show I paid $40 for last night was, not exaggerating, the worst production I have ever seen. In my entire life. The writing was as clever and entertaining as a 7th grade gay kid could write. The acting was decent given the material the actors had to work with but the timing of dialogue and basically everything, minus the set changes, was frequently awkward and the burlesque was just AWFUL. No one around me was laughing or enjoying the show. Not even a chuckle. There were a few people whooping and hollering who clearly knew the actors or were involved in the production. No one else. When we walked out at the end of the show, it was quiet and everyone left quickly. Even the people working there looked like they know it's bad. Heard some people talking as we were leaving complaining as much as we were about the entirety of the production. I don't know how to put it exactly to communicate an accurate picture for you...If you want to pay good money to subject yourself to a steady stream of immature and unfunny jokes about gay sex, this show is for you. Watching the actors interact with each other was like watching strangers who have nothing in common and don't like each other try to have chemistry but the dialogue was so bad and the timing so awkward, it was painful to watch and cringey. There was also an anti Christian theme, the Bible was disrespected, God was mocked, the Catholic Church and nuns were mocked...sprinkle that with some incest/pedophila AND necrophilia and you have this production. Since when is any of that funny? Even the political jokes fell completely flat. Really, should have been more specific in the ad...thought we were signing up for comedy and an interactive murder mystery but what we got was a steady stream of unfunny and immature sex jokes and simulated sex acts of every kind and that's pretty much it. To say this production is in poor taste would be too generous. This was a waste of my precious free time and money. Vegas Theater Company, please do better, this was not good community theater. Like really, WHAT were you thinking?!? The best thing about it was the ATTEMPT at chemistry between the maid and the butler but there was no real chemistry, the dialogue was hollow, it just sucked. Mrs. Cherry was decent acting wise... wasn't bowled over but she probably had nothing to work with. I won't be going back to the Vegas Theater Company...this was so bad I would never trust them to put on a decent show. I left feeling completely jipped. Total disappointment.

About a decade ago, 3 young men started Cockroach Theatre when they were students. Over the years, their productions have grown in number and quality and they found a home in the Arts District. The theatre is called the Art Square Theatre and this year, the company changed its name to Vegas Theatre Company. Their goal is to become a regional theatre company.Over the years, I have seen 43 plays at this and other venues and they have been cast very well and the sets are done quite well. The theatre is on the small side, seating less than 100 at maximum. It is always interesting to attend a play and see how they will arrange the seats to engage the audience fully in the play. From a boxing ring with seating on three sides in "The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity" to the close up seating in "The Chalk Boy," the directors never fail to fully engage the audience in their plays.The new name began this season and the first play is called "The Thanksgiving Play." It's a funny play.There is ample parking in the lot next to the Artifice Bar. The theatre is in the Art Square Building at the corner of First and Boulder. Go check them out. You'll keep coming back!

The thing about VTC is that is brilliant is it truly is the best black box theatre in the Arts District. EVERY single show is different. It's never just the same typical staging time and time again. Every set is different, every play brings a new life that tells a story that represents SOMEONE in the community. And that's what a great theatre company does. They tell powerful stories that represent a broad and wide variety of audiences, beliefs, and struggles. Can't wait to see what's next for this company. P.S. their side murals are pretty spectacular! They change with every show!

Cluelesque was HILARIOUS! I don't know what Julie h(some angry beaver below) is smoking, but I know every single show was sold out and heard nothing but positive reviews! I had an absolute blast watching this and hope it comes back again! We tried to go again the last night and it was sold out! Actually it was even over sold and they had a waiting list. If they come back again it is a MUST see! That pool boy was super cute too!

The Vegas Theater Company, formerly known as the Cockroach Theater, continues its established agenda of casting superior and thought-provoking content, stellar talent but oh dear God, please do something about those Quantanamo Bay-worthy seats! Two weekends ago I had the extraordinary pleasure of seeing one of the finest pieces of theater in my life. MEN IN BOATS. Despite its name, there are no "men" aboard these boats at least in physical form but the spirit of these courageous explorers transcends sex. This play has been well-reviewed at many different venues and every glowing superlative is absolutely true. Within a few minutes, my soul had transcended the theater and I was heading down river with the Men in Boats. When the casket of rum was "lost" in a river accident, my heart wept with them and rejoiced when the casket was recovered and the rum ("Yes, it's real") was handed out to cast and audience alike. Big hearts, big imaginations, big talent went into Jacklynn Backhaus's big spirited and ambitious play. Based on the journals of John Wesley Powell, explorer, on his expedition down the Green and Colorado Rivers into the (then) great unknown called the Grand Canyon, we engage that trip. Great acting, great story, great heart, singing, dancing and "real" rum. Theater at its finest. Bravo and well done.
