GVR did not include a sushi spot until just recently, when I got an ad in the mail for the grand opening of Blue Ribbon Sushi.Blue Ribbon, along with a new Mediterranean restaurant next door that's opening soon, replaces the void space where GVR's buffet used to be, which closed at the start of the COVID lockdown and never reopened once everything started returning to normal. I made a reservation for 5/3/24 at 7:00pm via OpenTable, and we were seated immediately after we showed up. We ended up getting a seat at a booth at the very back of the restaurant, where our waitress for the night was Deija.I looked over their cocktail menu and was interested in trying their Sake Punch cocktail. While it was excellent overall, the Sake Punch didn't have a very strong alcoholic taste to it, which I'm totally ok with. Most of the alcoholic ingredients involved were not present in my palate, making the Sake Punch taste more like pineapple juice than an actual cocktail. My boyfriend wasn't interested in any of their alcoholic drinks and just stuck with water. We shared an appetizer of the Tiger Tempura, which was basically like popcorn shrimp. It was big enough for the both of us to share and it was really good! For sushi rolls, I ordered the Phoenix Roll and my boyfriend got the Niji Roll. This was the first time that my sushi rolls were presented in a bowl and not on a plate, which I found interesting. The Niji Roll looked so good that I actually asked my boyfriend if he could share it with me, of course he said no. The Phoenix Roll included all sorts of vegetables such as carrots, asparagus, and a cucumber exterior, with all kinds of assorted fish added in.One thing that made me knock a star off this review was that it was super expensive for a sushi restaurant. It was $85 for just 4 menu items plus a $7.12 tax, where the grand total ended up being $92.12. Otherwise, this was a really good sushi place and I'm glad that GVR now has one.
