$1 taco Tuesday's. This is a small hole in the wall taco shop rub by two ladies. The food overall is ok, portions are what you'd expect for one dollar. Tried four different meats, adobada (extremely salty), carnitas was meh, pollo was also meh, carne asada was best of the bunch but not exceptional. Overall, turnover is low. Ingredient quality is average. Price and value is great for taco Tuesday, otherwise is slightly better than average prices. Would probably not go here unless in a pinch.

This a very nice little place with and even nicer lady that runs and cooks as well. I stopped in and had their Saturday special which included four beef rolled tacos with avocado and Cotija cheese and a side of Mexican rice and re-fried beans for only $3.99 (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/la-popular-tortilla-san-diego?select=lYOumo0ZRvXapRcEKsSZVw#lYOumo0ZRvXapRcEKsSZVw).The rolled tacos were very good and Ioved that she put fresh sliced avocados and grated Cotija cheese on top (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/la-popular-tortilla-san-diego?select=lYOumo0ZRvXapRcEKsSZVw#k0fUwWWaY7g39yrxR5eLuA). Very traditional. The rolled tacos had a good amount of of moist beef inside the rolls and the rolls themselves had a nice light crunch and mild chewiness to them that I really enjoyed. The rolled tacos were great with the house hot sauce (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/la-popular-tortilla-san-diego?select=lYOumo0ZRvXapRcEKsSZVw#mQU95q1hbdLiJtHcRkn5fw). It had a good kick, but I was more impressed with its great robust flavor with it burnt chile de arbol pepppers. The rice was nice and fluffy and lightly seasoned, and the re-fried beans had that good flavor that reminded me of the old fashion beans re-fried in lard or manteca. I'm not sure if they were, but they tasted good (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/la-popular-tortilla-san-diego?select=lYOumo0ZRvXapRcEKsSZVw#b3Rdy93c8x1eLQ2-qS9GVA). You got to love that salty Cotija cheese on top, because so many people do use it as much anymore. They offer daily specials that are on the wall poster, and daily cuisine that is not on the menu; for instance, on Monday's they offer a braised pork ribs in chile verde.

My plan was to find that tasty whole in the wall Mexican taco shop you hear about, but unfortunately this palace isn't the one. How can you f#@&!% up a machaca burrito. What I received was a 2 min prep of a premade and then warmed on the grill burrito, and it actually tasted that way. Incredibly disappointed. If you don't have standards on what comes out, you must not care what you sell. I see good reviews, but something is up when you get this kind of burro.

If you drove by this little tortilleria in Barrio Logan, nine out of ten you'd miss it. With enough room for 2 tables, "La Popu" is operated by a nice lady named Blanca with the help of her friend Ana. On most mornings, people from all over pick up their orders for freshly made flour tortillas and tortilla chips. Alternatively, Blanca serves up some very reasonably priced Mexican food that is easily on par with the rest of them. One of the best parts of this joint is the "secret menu" consisting of some home cooking reserved for family and friends of La Popu: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Sk5h1V6o-snQqQwSlrA-eQ?select=ScvRng-naHMygYlA3nWEKg#dtOgIrEVU1gnXfaw-tf0hw.

In a word- outstanding. The plates are simple but the flavors are specific and full. To be fair, I have only had the carnitas plate (twice because it's so dang good) but the people that I go with have gotten the soups and rolled tacos and carne asada, etc...all of it is very authentic and fantasticly prepared. It seems that every time I have gone there, the plates are prepared with the exact amount of ingredients to make a proper meal (their plates come separated and you have to assemble the tacos yourself). I love that noone knows about this place, and frankly, am surprised that they stay in business, considering the fact that there is never anyone in there when I go. I am happy to keep this place to myself, but on the other hand, am happy to tell you all about it. Hopefully we can generate some buzz on this place. They deserve it. Like I said, it VERY authentic, handmade, delicious and small. If you're in the Barrio, seek this place out. Quatros Milipas always has a crazy line, so if you're looking for alternatives, this is a STRONG candidate! And bring cash.

Cinco Estrellas... so here's how it all goes down: I grew up in SD. My mom loves Cuatro Milpas so I had to listen to her B.S. growing up about how great it was blah, blah, blah. I think it's totally overrated but that's a different story. Strike that, overrated my ass...it's crap on a plate. Someone somewhere told me "F*@% Cuatro Milpas and go around the corner to El Porvenir." So I did and their tortillas were amazing. But they went out of biz once the kids took over and ran it into the ground. Meanwhile I am at Cafe Moto one day (and I go to Cafe Moto cuz someone who knows more than I do said, "F@*& Ryan Bros and go to Cafe Moto") and asked where can get great tortillas now that Porvenir was gone. A lady in there told me to go to La Popular. Their tortillas are ok- totally worth the drive from my place downtown. But it was the Wednesday Tamale Special that freaked me out. First of all it's Tamales. Secondly it's Rice and Beans on the side. Thirdly, it's like, $3.25. WTF??? I was figuring for the price the tamales would blow and have like a teaspoon of crappy-ass meat but NO. These tamales were awesome.

Fantastic, and HUGE breakfast burritos. We tried the Carne Asada, and the ham with egg, cheese, and beans. Both were wonderful! Don't forget to try both of the hot sauces (red and green). They are very flavorful. Good place to stop on the way to Coronado Island.
