My husband and I decided to try Kyoto again, after many years. It was a pleasant surprise. Although we were seated on the left side of the restaurant(which felt very separate from the rest of the establishment), I try to focus on the positive aspects of our experience. The sushi was on point. We have had our share of sushi and the fish here was fresh and rush and flavorful. Presentation was very nice. The daikon butterfly and carrot sticks. Very appealing touch that for me, just elevated the experience because the food was really good. My husband suggested returning the next day. Haha. I would definitely recommend Kyoto if you're craving quality sushi (especially uni) in the Tacoma area.

I've gone here twice in my life and both of the times I've went have been amazing. When you walk in you walk over the small wooden bridge at the entrance. On your left and right is a pond filled with Koi fishes. You are greeted by a dim lit restaurant, but well lit sushi bar. I can't remember what it was called but it was called the supreme Dragon roll (or something like that?). They basically put a whole unagi (eel) in my roll. I absolutely love Unagi, so I had to order this. It was so flavorful and delicious. I wish I got another roll. My partner got the sashimi taster and a salmon, sashimi platter. Honestly thought it was pretty fresh and delicious. Since sushi is expensive. Anyways, I personally believe the price here is pretty fair. I probably wouldn't go here again if I was paying out of my own pocket but it's a pretty good place if you just want to eat a quick meal and chat with someone. Would recommend but you can probably buy better quality sushi elsewhere.

Our go to place for sushi and sashimi. The rolls are good, but I prefer the nigiri and sashimi. Fish has always been fresh and tasty. Service is good. There are fancier places in Seattle, but the food and service is just as good here.

I trusted the review too much. I ordered Chirashi. It was pure disappointment. It is not authentic. They put Furikake on sushi rice underneath of sashimi. Sashimi is frozen cold. Cheap quality fish. Huge wasabi and Tsuma (daikon radish) are on the rice. This is absolutely overpriced. I can pay the same and get so much better Chirashi at Japanese restaurants in Seattle. What a rip off ;( My husband's tempura is with thick and hard breading. This is not authentic tempura. Everything was fake. The server was petting her dog in the back of the restaurant, which made us feeling unsanitary. The tables and glass wall behind the seat are full of finger prints and sticky. Koi at the front and everything looking like Japanese but it was such a disappointment. We won't come back.

Kyoto is still a great spot to stop for a roll when in Lakewood! We like that the fish is always fresh and the service friendly!

I still had Kyoto bookmarked on my list despite being there and writing a review back in 2014. Not only was that quite a while ago and a refresher was necessary but I kept it bookmarked because I really liked the atmosphere here and wanted to take Steve here to experience it. It just turned out to be almost ten years before that happened so go figure! Lol! My opinion of the sushi hasn't changed too much. It was okay but not the freshest that Tacoma has to offer. The California Rolls seemed saltier than they really should be and that's before the soy sauce but I have had saltier. The Nigiri Sushi that came with my order (the Sushi Imperial sushi special) I liked better but again could have been fresher but not nearly as salty as the rolls.Customer service was good the whole time. Very friendly and attentive and easy to deal with in every way.Atmosphere is still great! The small waterfall and the pool below filled with koi is awesome and could very well be what draws me back again. You cross over a small bridge of Japanese design over the pool of koi before seeing the host or hostess to be seated. Some dining areas are traditional Japanese rooms where you take your shoes off and sit on pillows with a low table in front of you but there are the more typical booths you can use as well if you don't want to dine with that approach. Definitely worth a visit just for that but know that there are fresher sushi options in the surrounding area.

Ambiance Taste Price We were going to Hmart for groceries and decided to google for a restaurant nearby first. Kyoto was suggested and we checked the website and the prices posted were so inexpensive. We walked it and it had a great ambiance. But to our surprise the menu had different prices and it was almost 2x what was in their website. Quite disappointing! But no time to waste so we ordered. I ordered Bulgoki and my wife Grilled Salmon Cheek. They were superb and taste good. My wife's order took 20mins and mine was like 5 mins. I finished my order while she waited. Overall, good food but if price is not a concern I can comeback.

Everything about this place was amazing! The wait staff were nice and not overbearing in their attentiveness; a lot of vegetarian options and a lot of food options in general. Our whole party loved everything we ordered! The ambiance is nice, it's quiet, very decorative and the surprise part was the koi pond and walkway at the entrance.I've already recommended Kyoto to several people and will definitely be going back! Some of the best food I've had in Lakewood.

Kyoto is a Japanese restaurant located on South Tacoma Way. This was my first time at this restaurant, and it was a pleasant time! When you walk through the glass doors, you walk over a little wooden bridge and wait to be seated by a host. There are booths scattered around, bar seating, and a private dining area. My sister and I were seated at a booth near the front. The ambiance was quite serene and calm. We needed a few minutes to think about what to order, especially since I was undecisive about what I wanted to try here. I ended up ordering the Sake Ju, while my sister ordered the Tempera Udon. Then, we shared the Super Dragon Roll. The Sake Ju had much more rice than salmon, which was a bit upsetting to me. I ordered it because I saw other pictures of people ordering it and it looked really appealing with how much salmon they got. I would not order that again, unless I decided to order sashimi on the side to eat with it. All in all, it was a good experience, and I would consider coming back again to try other items off the menu.
