Follow a dirt road off the beaten path to the top of a hill. This will take you to Washington Creek Lavender, a charming little farm that is the result of Kathy and Jack Wilson's labors. The farm is open seasonally to the public, and there is variety of lavender plants here. Both Kathy and Jack are so welcoming and more than happy to share their knowledge with you. You will be surprised at how much you can learn about lavenders.Scroll around the lavender field, or take a seat in one of the chairs or benches in the field. Most importantly, just relax and enjoy the scenery. Though this is at the top of a hill, you cannot see anything beyond the field due to the trees and shrubs surrounding this place. The lavender field is your view, and the seclusion definitely makes this a nice escape from the normal day-to-day routine. Just keep in mind though that this is a working farm so watch your step when walking around.Make sure to go inside the barn to see how the drying process works. The barn is also a gift shop filled with handmade lavender products, most of which are made by Kathy. There are lavender sachets, eye pillows, dryer sheets, ceramics, and so much more. There is even cooking lavender too!Plan a visit to Washington Creek Lavender. Unless you have allergies, you will enjoy the therapeutic smell of the lavenders. Do not worry if you forget your sunscreen or bug spray. Kathy and Jack have some ready for you in the barn next to the guestbook. Just plan on unwinding and having a good day.

Lawrence has its own little slice of French countryside atop a hill just outside of town. Thousands of organic lavender plants blanket Kathy and Jack Wilson's property, which is open to the public by appointment as an official Kansas agri-tour site. Known at local farmers' markets, Kathy creates beautiful sachets, uniquely long-lasting dryer sheets, and more from the multiple varieties of lavender they grow.I spent a peaceful afternoon walking the fields with the Wilsons and didn't want to leave. I'm ready to sign up to help them do the weeding! Their cute store tucked inside the new drying barn is filled with beautiful ceramics and their lavender products. While we sat on the bench just outside, a white-tailed deer leapt through the tall grass not far away on its way to the creek. Kathy and Jack are gracious hosts. Call before if you want to visit, find them at the Lawrence or KC farmers' markets, and definitely check out their website. The best lavender I have ever smelled. Heavenly!
