The Unicorn offers up a slice of Broadway on Main Street, KCMO. I daresay it was the most enjoyable theater experience I've had since seeing Cabaret several years ago at Studio 54.Why? Because the theater offers top notch entertainment (they advertise that they produce "the hippest BoldNewPlays"). But it's more than that. Often the top notch entertainment bit is all you can ask for when going to the theater. Since childhood, I've been going to see many a Broadway Play that cost well over 200 dollars a ticket (some are up to 400 dollars a ticket. I don't lie!) and despite my petite stature (I'm freaking SHORT), I feel absolutely cramped and miserable in a seat that if it were on an airplane, at least it would be soon be spitting me out in a foreign land at those prices!I know, I know. Theater is expensive. Many theaters are old and that is part of the charm. The history, right? Of course. I'm a sucker for all of that, too, don't get me wrong. The theater in which I saw Grey Gardens the Musical offers spacious, comfortable seating in an extremely intimate environment. It's a modern theater, sure, but I was able to stretch my legs out, cross them even, and shift in my seat (OK, I'm restless when sitting for more than an hour), while enjoying the show. I believe there isn't a bad seat in the house.Grey Gardens blew me away. The sound was absolutely stellar and the performances were perfection. Everyone agreed that Drew and Jessica were on point with their GG performances. The actresses last night were just as good. I am not exaggerating. Blew. Me. Away.As Big Edie would say, "You CAN have your cake and eat it, too, in this life." Thank you, Unicorn for existing and making a quality theater experience a sure thing in Kansas City.

Count on Unicorn Theatre for a great night of cutting edge scripts and performances. Caught a preview of The Revolutionists and as usual, the show did not disappoint. Every detail of the production was carefully thought out and contributed to transporting the audience back in time. The casting was smart and the careful study and thorough preparation brought to the stage by this ensemble of actors matched their phenomenal talents. Get there early and enjoy refreshments including cocktails and sweet treats from Andre's and Scratch Bakery. Parking available on the street and in various lots near the theatre.

I went to see The Humans. It was my first time at the Unicorn. I took my boyfriend and even he enjoyed himself. The actors were amazing, the concessions reasonable, and the seating intimate. I love every minute of my experience and will definitely be back.

I've rarely been disappointed with this theater. They are always cutting edge, experimental and willing to take risks. The acting excels. I look forward, again and again to their next production.

Great little local theater with a very intimate setting. Plays are first run in the area. They present a good variety. All seats are great. There is a small parking lot and street parking. Student discounts are available for tickets. The plays are great quality. Actors do a fantastic job. Limited drink options are available and can be taken into the theater area. Great place to catch a play.

Very small and intimate venue. There's probably not a bad seat in the house given the size. We visited for the first time on4/30/2015 to see the Ghosts of Lote Bravo, a pretty dark and edgy play. Most of the performances were top notch as were the costume, sound, and set design, as well as the backstage work, which seemed considerable for this particular playThere's a small parking lot right next to the building. We got there early and found a spot quickly, but it's very small and might be a hassle of you get there late. The lobby, while somewhat small, even for this small venue, has a small concession stand with all the usuals (light snack, coffee, Wine, beer, even energy drinks-which I needed badly that night).Looking forward to my next visit.

I first went to a Unicorn production of Bent in 1983 I think. It was a small school room over off Southwest Blvd. around 35th street. Two actors, two cots, and seated about 25 people for an audience. It was probably the most intimate and moving production I've ever seen.Just saw A Very Joan Crawford Christmas by Jeff Church & Ron Megee yesterday. Over the top Campy humor, just what the doctor ordered. They have have come a long way since the 80's and are celebrating their 37th year, two stages now and a liquor license and security who helps with parking. This is a great venue, showcasing great talent.

This was our first time at The Unicorn. We have been meaning forever to go but just never made it. During the Fringe Fest this week there was a play there we wanted to see.We got there a little late and we were the last ones in. They were getting ready to close the box office but were nice enough to sell us our tickets and lead us back to the theater. The theater was already dark so she open the door ushered us in and stood with us until our eye adjusted to the dark and seated us.We took the first seats to our left since the play had started and we didn't want to interrupt anymore than we had already. We were in the last row on the far left and the seats were great. It is a small venue so you can see everything from anywhere. It still has the old theater feel with the modern things we love like central air and comfy seats. A must go if they are showing something that catches your interest go on down and have a good time.

Intimate little venue does some pretty edgy stuff. The show we saw was well-done, sound was great, the actors quite enjoyable to watch & the sets worked nicely. Seating is roomy even for relatively large people. I've gotten onto their mailing list now, so looking forward to coming back soon. They do lose a star for the horrible parking situation, though. There's a tiny lot that will fill up long before most people even think of arriving; everyone else has to scrounge for street parking.EDIT: there is now auxiliary parking across the street, in a larger lot, so there are options... which helps.

Unicorn Theatre is one of those places I have been dying to go to but just never got around to it... until now! I am involved with the Good Book Variety Revue show going on as a part of Fringe Fest and our performances are at the Unicorn's Main Stage. Firstly, the stage is HUGE! (for a burlesque show anyway) My estimate is that is seats about 200 people, maybe a little less. The dressing rooms are fantastic and well-equipped with adequate lighting and mirrors and even a shower! The staff definitely knows what they're doing and won't let you down, or give you half-assed lighting or sound. They were all very thorough in our sound/lighting checks. The public bathrooms of the theatre are REALLY clean too and smell really well. Which is one thing that always makes me happy! I definitely recommend seeing a show there if you're not a performer and don't have the opportunity to have your own show there!
