TL;DR: The Piano Room is a quintessential dive bar that has an older crowd and likes to play oldies/rock/folk/country songs. It has cheap drinks and a thriving live stage for the locals. If that sounds like your scene, check this place out! I wasn't sure if it was still going on since a lot of these reviews are older and COVID has changed a lot of these kinds of events. Rest assured, the Wednesday night mic night is still alive and well! My friends and I showed up around 8pm, which seemed to be close to the start of the open mic list. Each singer could do up to three songs at the beginning, but as the waitlist grew longer, it was limited to two. Most of the songs were covers, but maybe 30% or so were original songs. This is such a supportive crowd, and it was so fun to see folks trying out new content up on the stage. People come here for the atmosphere and the people. Don't expect the drinks to be anything fancy--the Old Fashioned tasted like straight whiskey, the gimlet was simple but satisfying, and the cherry limeade was pleasantly more cherry than lime--but do expect cheap drinks that are just right for a dive bar. Things to know for your first time: - Schedule: Karaoke night is Tuesday, starting at 9pm, and open mic is Wednesday. They also have a trivia night. - Getting there: The Piano Room is totally unmarked from the outside (except for a few neon signs for beer). It's almost right across from Waldo Thai, and it's next to a Price Chopper. A picture of the storefront is in the review images below.- There's a full bar, but no menu. They can do pretty much any classic drink

The folks here are really sweet and the service was great, but I have to knock off a couple of stars because the ENTIRE place, from the moment we walked in, smelled like bathrooms. We had to leave early because I couldn't stomach the smell anymore. I'd love to try to come back for one of their trivia nights or something, but I don't think I could because of the overwhelming bad smell.

This place is wild! It's like stepping back in time. Heather, the bartender, not only makes solid drinks, she has the most incredible voice! She'll be pouring a round of shots, cleaning up after people, and never miss a beat singing through the headset. Very fun and welcoming atmosphere. A hidden gem in KC!

My experience with open mics has led me to sharecthe fact that the Piano Room has a unique, inclusive, neighborhood vibe going on. Just about everybody who comes in there lives nearby, and is what I imagine the television show Cheers to have been like. You always see somebody you know, even though I live nowhere near the Piano Room. I play upright Bass with Karen Baum every Wednesday night to commence the open mic show. Week in, week out, there are so many of us Kansas Citians who want to keep music in our lives. Even if you are a musician, it's a great spot to work out the kinks in the song you might be writing or, like me, who had never before sung in front of people not 6 months ago, to hone your skills at whatever your stretching to achieve. It's a little diving board into a warm pool for anyone to enjoy! Check out the photos of my friends of The Ain't Misbehavin's, as well as Rob Carlson (guitarist/composer)and Guilherme Vez (bassist and sound engineer). As well as photos of a new violin/bass duo called Black Folk. (They're so new that I don't know they're names yet).Closet comedian? Poet? Musician? Songster? Come check out The Piano Room, Wednesday night is open mic, but there's other entertainment the rest of the week.

Wow! Hidden gem with amazing history and awesome regulars who welcome first timers. Wait staff was fantastic and the bartender-amazing! She sang the entire time while she was making drinks for the entire bar, never missing a beat!

This is the best neighborhood dive bar in Kansas City. Please don't go! But for reals, this is my go-to place to hang out with my bestie for a few drinks and entertainment. The drinks are priced low and the bartenders are super friendly. The cool part about The Piano Room is that the staff will sing and serve you at the same time. The first time I was there I heard someone singing but couldn't find the singer until I looked at the main bartender behind the bar slinging drinks and belting her heart out. Love it.The Piano Room is also a low-key gay bar. It's mostly an older crowd who love cheap drinks and singing. They don't serve food here but if you get hungry you can always have food delivered and eat it there. Actually, 7 times out of 10, I've gone to the Piano Room and someone had brought in food for the bar like pizza delivery or cake. Real quality neighbors here.I also love that I can go to the Piano Room by myself and chill out at the bar over a cocktail and watch the Royals game. No one is going to bother me. It's super chill. Bottom line: The Piano Room is like the show Cheers! but with more singing and old gay dudes. I love it.

What a fun night and what a welcoming place to hang out! We could not have been more impressed by the bartender (Heather, I believe) and one of the servers, Arianna (spelling?). They can multitask like no other!!! They were taking orders, making drinks, and singing and the whole time they made it look effortless! Arianna was the sweetest server - friendly and hard working! We were not even in her section, and yet, she went out of her way to make sure we were taken care and having a good time! That is the kind of service that really makes you want to come back. This place is definitely filled with regulars but at no time did we feel out of place. In fact, we were treated to fudgesicles supplied by one of those regulars who couldn't have been sweeter! This may be a dive bar, but it is probably one of the most inviting and welcoming dive bars we've been to and I wish they were in my neighborhood!

Went for a night out for music on Saturday and absolutely loved it! Drinks are affordable and poured so you know you're getting what you ordered. The waitresses impressed us with their ability to sing and serve - especially the bartender! It was amazing how many things she could do at once while singing the effortlessly. We would have liked a few more upbeat songs but those may have been on the post midnight set. Since I had been traveling all week, we left before that happened. The crowd was mostly regulars and super friendly. So friendly we got fudgsicles from one of the patrons who had a crazing and went to the closest store to buy a box to share. :) While Arianna wasn't officially our waitress, she definitely made our experience as wonderful as it was! We'll be sure to sit in her section just to chat with her from now on. Safe to say we'll be back!
