Whilst wandering around one of the many bridal shows I attended while engaged, I came across a photo of the perfect cake--a simple but beautiful three-tiered white cake with a cluster of roses at the top, cascading down one side and a surrounded by a pool of rose petals. I had to have it! The card said it was made at Sugar and Spice. I called them up and made an appointment for the following weekend.Jennifer is one of the owners and also responsible for making the cakes. She invited me to her shop in Parkville for a sampling of the cake. I'm no good with tasting wedding cakes simply because I love cake in all its glory, and it's hard for me to find one I don't like. Jennifer's cake was light and fluffy, and not overly sweet. Perfect for me! We sampled a couple of flavours (all very nice) and I settled on the plain white with buttercream frosting. The cake was reasonably priced (competitive if not less than most in the area) and the pricing included a silver cake tray for the table top. A $100 deposit was required and the remainder had to be paid in full by the day of the wedding. If the cake tray isn't returned, she keeps your deposit. Easy system! The cake was delivered right on time on the morning of the wedding. We had to order the flowers ourselves and have them ready to go. Jennifer set to work on decorating the cake with flowers and within 10 minutes it was finished and was every bit as beautiful as the photo from the bridal show. I got tons of compliments throughout the night on the great cake.

We met with Jennifer of S&S and we immediately liked her. She seemed like she'd be very easy to work with, organized, etc. If only. I understand she is also doing their cakes & therefore busy but maybe that means she shouldn't be our point of contact. We booked them and put a deposit down, we contacted them about getting tasting options. When we first met with them we were told to give them a list of things to try. We looked over some of the typ. menu items and ones we wanted to try and sent them a list. We waited a week or two and heard nothing back... Finally I called and got the main cook who took down the items we wanted & he told us when we could come get them. We showed up that day (to Jennifer's surprise) and they put together a group of to go boxes for us. They were not at all what we asked for. I'm certain they were just whatever they were preparing that day for other events. So we tried the things they gave us & we found some things we liked & thought we were making progress. We emailed them a list of the things we liked & some other things we might want to try but more or less had a menu figured out. No response. More emails... phone calls. Nothing. Finally a full month & a half of emails & calls with no response, we found a new caterer. We called to fire them and lo & behold, a response! We were given some excuse like our file never got switched over from prospective to client or something but this was MONTHS after hiring them, emailing them & having talked to the on the phone, gotten food from them & oh yeah, paying them a deposit. We promptly demanded our deposit back, which we received & went on our merry way with another caterer. If you want to save yourself a massive headache, you too will go somewhere else. After we started running into issues I found other reviews about non-responsiveness. We were not at all an isolated incident. They clearly need to hire someone who simply deals with communications because they are more than just terrible at it.

I found this vendor at a bridal show and loved their cake! After sampling a few pieces and speaking with them, I thought I found my cake vendor. Well, I was wrong!!!!! After making serval attempts to schedule a consultation, when I finally got a hold of them..., AGAIN..., I was told they're booked on my date. Why didnt they tell me this two weeks ago, i don't know!?!?!? I should have took note of the red flags, but again, their cake was so awesome. If you have time to babysit a vendor and deal with their unorganized ways, then this may be a good choice for you! Otherwise, I do not recommend them at all. They are unprofessional and extremely unorganized. Brides, save yourself a headache :)

Worst decision that we could have ever made was to use this caterer! They are absolutely unresponsive to phone calls and it appears by the last review to emails as well. I called initially to set up a meeting with them and no response-my fiancee had to contact Jennifer directly on Facebook. We finally had a meeting with Larry and we put a deposit down for our date. A few weeks out from the wedding we decided we might want them to also do the cake and we wanted to finalize the wedding menu-I called and left messages twice so did my fiancee-you guessed it no return calls! My fiancee stopped into their office and had one of Larrys employees leave a note and said we need a call back or we are going to find another caterer-no call! I called one more time and low and behold he answered! I told him we had been trying to call and no apology just "I guess I am hard to get ahold of" so we begrudgingly made another appt with him to taste cake and finalize our menu and guess what he was late! With NO apology. He sits down and acts like he is doing us a favor by being there and we voiced out concerns and instead of apologizing and admitting their faults he asked if we wanted our money back-my fiancee said yes and he gave us a check made out the wrong person! Do yourself a favor and DO NOT USE THEM. It will just add more stress and frustration on your big day. Now we are left with 2 weeks out and no caterer. I think he thought there would be no way we would cancel this late but we did not want to pay him one cent!

We have had the best experience with sugar and spice catering. They provided our wedding cakes for our wedding and did a fabulous job. We decided to do small individual cakes for each table, and they delivered a delicious and elegant cake. Fast forward to a year later, we just picked up our anniversary cake, which is as fabulous and tasty as a year ago. I would highly recommend them for your wedding cake and catering needs.

The other reviews on this thread are quite old and this business deserves better on this platform. Google reviews are much different and more up to date so wanted to add a review here to boost their rating. My family has been using Sugar and Spice for our cake needs since 1987. They have done our wedding cakes, to our birthday cakes, to our children's birthday cakes, Easter cakes, you name it. Their cake is SO GOOD, seriously THE BEST. I've never had an order go wrong and they are simply kind to work with. Highly recommend this little shop in Parkville.

Working with Sugar and Spice was the worst decision we made in the wedding process and was the single most frustrating and stressful aspect to the planning process. We often waited weeks before hearing responses to our emails and many times had to follow up with multiple emails and calls before hearing a response. We worked for ovre a month to get a formal contract signed and were treated as though they were doing us a favor as that is not normally something they do.Two weeks prior to the wedding, we waited over 10 days before hearing a response back on several outstanding questions. When we voiced our frustrations, we were met with curt responses and treated as though our event was not important enough and that we were unreasonable to expect a faster response time as they were "very busy."During the setup, we asked the caterer to place the cake topper we had purchased on top of the cake. 25 minutes prior to the ceremony the head caterer stormed up to the groom and said "You're killing me! If this falls off I will NOT be held responsible."The food was fine, the presentation was fine, the cost was low. They handled the contact with the rental company which was helpful. The stress and frustration was not worth it.We would strongly NOT recommend using Sugar and Spice and we have asked our venue to remove them from the preferred caterer list.

Just OK food. Good cake. HORRIBLE customer service!!!!Working with Sugar and Spice catering was the most difficult and frustrating part about planning our wedding. They are very unprofessional and are very uncommunicative. I must have called 15 times before I ever got one phone call back. Not to mention the countless emails I sent in vain.Once I finally made an appointment to go talk with them, the owner was late to the meeting! He was a very nice man, but was extremely unprofessional and made us feel like he was doing us some huge favor by letting us come in and talk with him.In the end, we decided to go with them as our caterer because you couldn't beat the price. HUGE MISTAKE!The owner told us that he doesn't do contracts and that we would basically have to take his word on everything. (Red flag number one. How do you expect to run a business in the wedding industry if you don't have a contract??) Against our better judgment, we mailed in our deposit to reserve our date and the owner never sent us a receipt or called us to tell us he had gotten it or anything. I called multiple times over the weeks leading up to my wedding to talk to him to make sure he has all the info needed (what food we want, what cake flavors we want, etc.) and he either NEVER answer the phone or he answers and promptly tells me he needs to call me back because "something has come up" before I even finish my first sentence. (He never calls back...)I am very frustrated and if I could go back in time I would NEVER EVER EVER work with Sugar and Spice Catering!

I have heard great things about Sugar and Spice. So many, in fact, that I was hoping to hire them to cater our wedding. After sending an email requesting an appointment, I heard nothing. Over a week later, I called and left a message. I did receive a call back from Rebecca but was unable to answer as I was in a meeting. When I called back, I left another message. Over the course of three and a half weeks, I called more than five times between the two numbers provided to me and have heard nothing since. I texted Rebecca thinking that might be a more convenient method of communication, but judging by the unanswered message, I found I was wrong. Last week I called on both Tuesday and Thursday leaving messages both times. As of today, there has still been no call back. What a disappointment! I love shopping local and prefer to keep my dollars in my community. The food must be the best ever made if people are willing to put up with being ignored for weeks on end. At this point, any future attempts to get Rebecca to take on even a simple phone conversation will feel like I am begging.

We used sugar and spice catering for our wedding. From the beginning we fell in love with the food and when we found out the pricing we were more in love. You get amazing food at an even more wonderful price. Throughout the whole process they were very helpful and great to work with. They were everything we wanted and more. The food was absolutely amazing the night of and we got compliments on it all night long. The service was just as good as the food. They were so polite and helpful. We also got our cake from them too which we also got compliments on all night long. The cake was delicious and beautiful. We are so happy with how it turned out and would recommend them to anyone that ever asks!!!-The Cunningham's
