I visited the Miller Nichols Library on the campus of UMKC today after hearing about the Robert Sutton Museum of Geosciences. Another one of those hidden gems that I've never heard about until this weekend.Housed in a large space on the 3rd floor, the museum offers thousands of items to view and even touch. Every sort of rock, mineral, fossil, geodes, petrified wood, meteorite...is here with identification signage. It's a very impressive collection and it free and open whenever the library is open which has extensive hours of operation. I also enjoyed viewing two other exhibits - "The Kansas City that never was"; signage and photos of major projects that never got off the ground or were radically changed before completion; and the Starr Women's Hall of Fame - which celebrates Kansas City's notable women in the world of business, education, politics, and philanthropy. The library also houses other collections and research areas that were not open on Sunday or by appointment only. I would love to see the Marr Sound Archives offer a permanent public exhibit. Another great free educational and entertaining attraction in "The Paris of the Plains".

Kind of hate this place for the amount of hours I spent here, but also kind of love it. Library staff are great too

Miller Nichols Library is a pretty great place to study if you're a UMKC student. It's generally clean, and five floors ranging from regular conversation and socialization, to quiet group study, to pin-drop silence give you the ability to study how you like without too many interruptions. There is plenty of room, and I can almost always find a big table or a small cubicle if I look around enough. The only disappointing thing about the library is the hours: closing at 6pm on Friday/Saturday afternoons and not opening until 11am/1pm on Saturday/Sunday. The library is open to the public, but does not have public wifi--so be prepared to use some data if you're not a student!

BELOW ARE THE NEW LIBRARY HOURS. This library is always clean and the staff are polite. They also have longer library hours now, which was all that was missing. If you're going here after 11pm on weekdays, you will need to be a student or impersonate one (haha...) and must swipe your card or input your student ID number to enter.
