MDL Wine & Spirits

I've been visiting this MDL with some frequency for around ten years so it's about time I leave some feedback. Nestled into a busy shopping center at 95th and Antioch this neighborhood liquor store is super convenient and has good selection for its size. To me, MDL is kind of a hybrid between a very small mom and pop and a mega liquor store like total wine. You're going to find a good selection of everything but you may not find EVERYTHING if that makes sense. The prices are similarly marked - cheaper than a super small place, but again hard to compete with a mega store. I go here mostly because it's close to my house and has decent selection, is local (I think!), and has friendly staff. They also usually carry seasonal releases from local breweries and distilleries which is nice to know you can count on them to have new releases in stock when they come out. Overall this is a solid place and I'm super grateful to have it in my backyard.

My girlfriend was accused of having a bottle in her purse while leaving the store. Tyler was beyond rude. There's a way to do a security check without seeming like you are racially profiling. What he claimed "well I hear bottles" when in actuality what he heard was my keys against my metal water bottles. I was told not to come back even though we did nothing wrong. I've been shopping at this store for years as it's in my neighborhood but I will never spend another dime supporting ignorance and an inability to admit a mistake.

They carry a wide range of beers, wines, and spirits. The staff is always very helpful. Even though the store is large, it is easy to find what you are looking for.

Two times in the past week I have went to check out and the price that rang up was different than the price tag on the shelf. Today I tried purchasing 4 single cans of Boulevard Space Camper; the price tag on the shelf was $1.59 which seemed normal because I have paid this price at other stores. They rang up 44% more expensive. The lady at the register and I walked back to the fridge so I could show her the price. She contacted a manager to see if she could charge me the displayed price; he would not honor it. He proceeded to take down the tag. I purchased something else, since I was already there, and while doing so I check the other item I tried purchasing earlier in the week; the price had not been corrected. Seems to be a trend as I'm not that lucky. This is disappointing since I am new to the area; I'm sure there is another store close by that runs a more efficient and honest business.

Easily on the upper echelon of liquor stores in the Kansas City area. Especially for those who live in the KS hemisphere, it can often be difficult to find rare-ish liquors without venturing to the dark side (Missouri) or going to Gomers on either ends of the city. Luckily, Metcalf Discount Liquors provides a blessedly wonderful alternative for the JoCo-ers of Yelp.First off, their wine selection is over the top. They've got an entire HALF of the store dedicated to upper-tier wines, with a full row of ONLY Rose's. I couldn't find the specific Rose I was looking for, but the guy at the checkout line looked it up and offered to order it in- an offer I'll gladly take any day! They showcase an expansive collection of bourbons, whiskeys, tequilas, and just about any type of hard liquor you can find, including small batch producers and whiskeys you see on "best of" lists. However, their beer selection is probably the biggest disappointment here. Although their selection is pretty standard, I do appreciate them offering Boulevard beers in larger pack sizes that rival Costco prices. They do have a small collection of imports, including the Iron Maiden beer. WHO CARRIES IRON MAIDEN BEER?! Haven't seen that in a store in the entirety of my existence. Had to pick up a bottle and went full-on fanboy for a solid 5 minutes. Certainly makes up for their lack of domestic variety.Metcalf Discount Liquors is no Specs (for the Texans who can relate), but it rivals, if not exceeds, what Gomers is able to offer. They offer a touch of Midwestern hospitality that you don't always find at liquor stores. All in all, awesome experience. Definitely check it out if you're looking for something rare or feeling venturous for something new.

Virus hours were not updated so a wasted trip was made here. This place said it was open till 11 on Wednesday, however I discovered they close at 8 or 9 depending on the night of the week. Store owners need to insure yelp details are current, frustrating.

I'll be posting many updated reviews for this business, due to it's close proximity for me. Tonight's visit was as good as before ... employees are so helpful, nice, and awesome!Tip: Check out the front of the store; after I bought my 3 beers (see uploaded pictures), I found the $1.00/bottle bin. That's pretty cool, if you're looking for an inexpensive couple of beers. The selection of beers they offer is over the top. One of the best things in life is exploring new breweries!!!!!! This visit, I sampled 3 beers from Anchor Brewing Company out of San Francisco, CA. The Barley Wine Style was my favorite!!!!! Wonderful complex flavor profile!!!!!!!

Employees are great and the selection is much better than Total Wine! The store is clean and organized I highly recommend to anyone to shop here.

*Buying while black* last month I made a large order @MDL for a few thousand dollars worth of liquor & beer. We got the U-Haul loaded up and went to pay and because my bosses first card was declined the guy helping us (high strung) ran to his co-workers and stopped them and made them unload the whole truck told me that me and my wife seemed "fishy" and proceeded lot embarras us in front of the store and we have lived and came into that store for the last 12+ year mind you, he didn't even take a second to let me explain or find out what's going on. I could have just put it on my card and had my boss pay me back but he was so in a hurry to make a scene I just let him continue with that. It's not uncommon for a purchase of that size to be flagged on a card so the fact that he went to that level really disappointed us and worse the co-workers stood by and watched which makes them just as bad because no one stood up for us and let this embarrassment go through. When my boss arrived (White guy) he paid with a card, then had to reload everything back up and we were on a time crunch for a large NFL tailgate we hosted and the same guy (middle age, beard) (they know who he is, doesn't seem to be his first time in this positio) Gave us a no smile half attitude apology and didn't care we came to do great business with that company and told us they have had problems in the past! We all know that's code for "we're going to try and justify why you are being treated like this". This company will now miss thousands of dollars in return customers because of the staff they provide and that might not mean a lot to an employee but I know the owners would have appreciated that amount consistently coming back! Horrible experience. If you black while shopping here you might think again it's almost 2024 and we are not going quietly about these issues!!

We've typically had great service here but today it was terrible! Employee told me he didn't know if they carry a certain beer but said "if we do it's over there somewhere". Huh? Guy ringing me up was Incredibly rude. We normally buy a couple cases of wine but today I only spent $100. If you are going to work there, please be helpful & courteous. Lots of liquor store options out there.
