I wasn't able to call in time before they closed to place a to go order for a carafe of coffee and dozen pastries. The staff was super friendly and provided excellent and quick service when I went in the morning I needed it. Pastries and coffee were yummy- great spot in NKC with plenty of natural light. Always love the vibe of McClains!Highly recommend the NKC location

SO GLAD to have a McLain's Market in North KC!! Nice to have a taste of quality and class from Johnson County farther north than one generally finds 'the finer things' Kansas City has to offer. When I called looking for Christmas cookies with Christmas less than a week away, I assumed I was out-of-luck... or, at best, I would need to make a screaming dash thru traffic to one of the other McLain's locations in the city. But the young lady I spoke with at McLain's Market in North KC was so very warm, friendly, and helpful, assuring us she still had enough decorated cookies on-hand to still make our Christmas party a delight! She had them ready when she said they would be and the team inside made me feel welcome when I arrived to pick up the two boxes of cookies. (The cookies were done exceptionally well and tasted EXACTLY the way a decorated Christmas cookie should taste! The frosting was a touch too thick for my taste, but I recognize that can be a matter of personal preference; and while they were decorated well, as previously noted, the price per cookie was VERY high... hence the 4 star rating instead of 5.)All-in-all, a worthwhile experience. Next Christmas we may still purchase our Christmas cookies from McLain's, we'll just be sure to allow much more time so that we aren't feeling a time-crunch to get it done in, allowing for attention to be given to cost. But still grateful to have McLain's Market in North KC!

After having the worst grilled cheese sandwich in my life and over the top rudeness from a manager (not willing to honor their clearly marked prices) at their then newly opened Shawnee location; I promised myself never to return to a McLain's Market. Now here I am - four years later at their new NKC location. Expecting to have trouble parking in the booming neighborhood, I was thrilled to see 15 minute parking spots in front of the space. Excellent.I had a pecan bar and a Salted Market hot cappuccino for an early afternoon pick-me-up. Both were great quality. They use beans roasted by their sister company Sway Roasters. Two issues that I did encounter:As soon as i walked to the counter, I was asked if I was having lunch. I replied "no, just a coffee and pastry". She then asked me to step 10 feet down to the register, which was rather odd because I had not decided on my coffee drink and was whisked away from the pastry counter, so I had no idea what to order, leaving me to retrace my steps to eye the case and the drink menu. A more streamlined approach needs to be worked out.The second issue was the noise level. Terrible acoustics, loud music playing (not bad music - just too loud for the space). Top that off with customers near me talking loudly and a another gent on a business call without an earpiece... I couldn't eat that little pecan bar fast enough to get the hell out of there to save my sanity. Would I return? For a pastry or coffee to go only. How about lunch Ralphie? No, that grilled cheese sandwich has scared me away from their lunch options permanently.

I cannot recommend McLain's enough. I did a pickup order, and they notified me that they ran out of the blueberry lemon scone. They were going to refund me and let me pick a new pastry. When I arrived, much to my happiness they had the scone. They let me keep the scone for free! The food is amazing, but so is the service. Would recommend the scone, danish, and cream cheese cinnamon roll. It will change your life.

Very excited that there is a McLain's up north! Something like this was definitely missing. It's great for a quick stop in to grab a pastry and coffee to go or for a quick lunch inside. I will say right now it's very busy at lunch time and not the greatest place to do a working lunch. The concrete floor and ceiling makes it pretty echo-y inside. But it's a large, beautiful space with a very friendly and accommodating staff.

Perfect spot for the latest iteration of this small but wonderful chain of bakery/restaurants. North KC is coming on strong lately with plenty of new housing, commercial, and entertainment venues and a place for a cup of coffee or a breakfast goodie fits just perfectly.McLain's has expanded from their Waldo roots but they still deliver a consistent experience. This spot in the Oxbow apartment building might have a footprint that is a *just* a touch smaller than other locations, but the offerings, service, and throughput are top-notch. Parking in NKC can sometimes be a little tricky but Swift Street is generally pretty tame during the week. Any of the baked goods are a win at McLain's but I highly suggest one of their sandwiches or salads highlighted on the menu. Great spot for breakfast or lunch and it will only get better.

The North Kansas City location is a great addition to McLain's. I ordered my favorite, the Farm and it was the same quality as always. The new space is light and open with a few spots outside with nice big umbrellas. The staff were friendly and service was fast. Highly recommend checking the new location out!

McLains opened recently in North KC. I've tried their other locations but I'm thrilled they've come to the Northland! All of their food is cooked fresh and the employees are very friendly. When we walked into their new location off Swift Street, we were immediately greeted with a sample cookie. What a tasty way to start off lunch! At the entry was a long table full of local goodies on sale. At the counter I ordered the chicken salad sandwich with homemade chips and a vanilla latte. It was a bitter cold day so that warm delightful coffee hit the spot. They have a variety of drink options or you can visit the water station located at the end of the counter. When the food is ready they bring it out to your table. If you need a to-go container at the end of your meal, they have 2 self-serve stations so you aren't waiting on someone else to get them for you. If a sweet treat is your desire, there are cookies, cakes, cupcakes and more ready for you PLUS you can special order for special occasions. If you need a place to study or work, this spot offers several 2-top tables perfect for that. Of course there are bigger tables if you aren't working/studying alone.
