My son and I went here, and at first were very impressed by the service. We were seated promptly, chips and salsa delivered quickly, and the server was there almost immediately to take our drink order. This continued to be our impression as he checked regularly to make sure our drinks were filled, and our dinner was great (I highly recommend trying the Dori-Nachos as they are unique and delicious), up until the point that is wasn't. It seemed like a sudden switch from amazing level of attention, while not being intrusive, to he stopped checking at all. For the last 20 minutes or so we were there, we got to the point of physically attempting to get his attention in order to get to go boxes, and our check. I truly got the impression (and I hope I am correct) that this was not the norm here, so I will be back to give it another try, but was not the best first impression overall.

Los Compadres is great tasting, homemade, and affordable Mexican food. Service was quick and attentive. The ambiance is welcoming and lively. The Los Padres platter is huge and enough for two. We will definitely be coming back.

Wow, lots of controversy over what is and isn't good Mexican food and whose review is more accurate. Hopefully, I will help clear the air, so to speak. As a native Southern Californian with some serious Mexican ancestry, I feel comfortable rating what is and is not good Mexican food. First, you really have to have several standards. No offense to any place, but the vast majority of the best Mexican food I have ever tasted has all come from So Cal. Whether it is a sit-down restaurant, a tiny hole in the wall place, or food cart rolling down the sidewalk, it is almost all authentic and some of the best you will ever taste. It truly is the gold standard, and it really isn't fair to compare other places Mexican food to So Cals. The south tends to have a lot of Tex-Mex, which is very good as well, just different, and should be judged by its own standard, but not specifically as Mexican food. This leads us to Midwest Mexican food. Because most Midwestern folks do not like spicy food, and love their ground beef and American cheese, most restaurants cater to that, including a lot of Mexican restaurants. It just is what it is. While it is not comparable to So Cal Mexican food, it can be compared to other Midwestern Mexican restaurants. With that in mind, here is my review of Los Compadres, a place I have eaten many times. The service is always top notch, five stars in my book. I have been in the restaurant several times when it is busy and understaffed, and they still find a way to go above and beyond. Their chips and salsa are very good. They are thin and warm. I have never had thick chips here so maybe Sandy L confused that part of their meal with another place? I don't know. The salsa is very tasty, but there is no hot spice at all. I always ask for some of the hot sauce from the back and mix it with the regular sauce to make a spicy delicious treat. I have never been charged for the hot sauce, so I am sorry to hear that happened to you Patty T. Their Micheladas and margaritas are outstanding. The majority of their food ranges from very good to outstanding. Their Caldo Tlalpeño is the best I have ever had. This is a must order when it is chilly outside. I have to agree with Patty T on the tacos. And it is not a problem just here, pretty much every Midwest Mexican restaurant just can't make good tacos. Abelardo's near the Belt and Frederick has the best overall Mexican food and very good tacos. But it is to go only. That makes Los Compadres the best sit-down place in my opinion. Go see for yourself and join us in the debate here.

Absolutely delicious. By far the best Mexican restaurant in town. The chips and salsa are fresh and very good. The portions are plenty and well prepared. Service was very good and the wait staff is very friendly. Oh yeah, the margaritas are very good also. Just what St Joe needed! Make sure you check this place out if you get the chance.

The strongest margaritas in town, made with real ingredients, not just a bottled mix. We had the carnitas and carne asada plate. Hot and fresh ingredients. Friendly and attentive waiter. Cute party atmosphere.

After a great morning watching the Chiefs at training camp, we enjoyed a delicious lunch here. The decor is festive and colorful. Our waiter was efficient, knowledgeable, and fun! The food did not disappoint. We had the lunch fajitas and a tasty Marguerite!I'll return here next time I'm through St Joseph.

Marvin and Joe apparently have never had good Mexican food. Listen to Patty T. We went for lunch this past Wednesday. The waiter was awesome and very attentive, but that's about all the good I have to say. The other staff all stood around then sat in a booth and just talked and laughed and were on their phones. Apparently only our waiter had things to do. The chips are too thick and overfried - Xochil from the grocery store are way better. Salsa is okay, but I have definitely had better. I had the lunch combo with chicken taco and cheese enchilada with beans. The chicken taco comes in a gringo's grocery store hard shell, the chicken just tasted like boiled shredded chicken, not a lick of seasoning. The enchilada was like a string cheese stick slightly melted and barely warm. The red enchilada sauce on top was so watery it was pink and again no flavor. The refried beans were a runny mess, again no seasoning, seems to be a theme. I would send you to Sotelo's, they started out awesome but went way downhill. I haven't been there lately to see if it's still the same. Best bet in this town is Abelardo's, not a sit down place but their food is way better.

Food was mediocre at best. Asked for hot salsa. They charged me more for the hot salsa than my taco or tamale. He said nothing that I had to pay for salsa. Then no soap in women's bathroom.
