Ken Doll Photography

Ken and Maggie Doll are incredible. They did our engagement photos, a boudoir set that I did as a gift for my husband, and my wedding photos, and I am incredibly thrilled with the results.My husband and I got married in Oakland, CA, which clearly is nowhere near Topeka, but I have seen Ken's work before and I knew I had to have them. Why, you might ask? Well, let's start with the quality of service. Ken and Maggie have an amazing 'bed side' manner. They are friendly, genuinely interested in their clients, and funny. It's hard (don't laugh, I'm serious) to have your photos taken for lengths of time. So often, without a talented photographer, you'll see the subjects run into 'fixed smile' (which is really more of a grimace), but that never happens to Ken and Maggie. They tell jokes, stories, and know how to insert faux-breaks so that their subjects are always comfortable and having a good time. Ken also will do just about anything for a shot. A great example occurred during our engagement set - we wanted to do pictures that exemplified the bay area... one of which included a photo of my husband dipping me in front of the Transamerica building. Ken literally ran out into traffic and laid down in the street to get the right angle to take the perfect picture. Another example was during our wedding; there was a beautiful bay window in the house where I was getting ready. Again, Ken splayed himself out in what appeared to be a seriously uncomfortable position while Maggie hung from an overhang to set the light. The result? I looked like a goddess.The style of photography that Ken takes varies from a more photojournalism ('in the moment') feel to straight portraiture. He's creative, and definitely likes to work with movement and spontaneity, but he also works with his clients to make sure all the 'must haves' are covered. I gave them a short list of photos that I knew I wanted (e.g. one with me, my mom, and my grandmother) but after seeing his work, I was totally comfortable trusting him and his artistic license. The results are INCREDIBLE. On the wedding day, Ken split his time between me getting ready and my husband greeting guests. He and Maggie both take pictures, which means even when he wasn't there in person, the moments were still getting captured. He was also really sensitive to my husband's desire not to see me in my gown before the wedding, which meant that he had to really scoot in order to get all the posed portraits after the ceremony in order to meet the timeline. Despite this, he kept his trademark sense of humor and ease in interacting with me, my wedding party, and my guests. It truly was like he was one of the guests himself!!! He was also a consummate professional with my other vendors; my wedding planner (who was wonderful!) was a bit of a hardass in keeping to a timeline and schedule, but he didn't let that phase him one bit! He was sweet, jovial, and again, the pictures speak for themselves.Ken gave me all of my photos on a stick drive, and then offers lots of options for prints, books, and similar. He did our guestbook, which turned out absolutely beautifully, and is one of our favorite momentos of our wedding. All told, I can't imagine a better photographer and I'm completely thrilled with everything I got. I would absolutely recommend Ken Doll Photography to all of my friends, family, acquaintances, and anything in between.

We have used Ken for many years now. He has taken our family pictures, our kids senior pictures as well as head shots and group pictures for my husbands work. He is very professional, down to earth, easy going and very comforting to work with. We always have lots of amazing pictures to choose from as he captures our family and children in such a beautiful light.

I'm from California but wanted to purchase my 85 year old grandmother a special gift for her birthday in Kansas. I called Ken from across the country and explained my circumstances. Elderly ladies want prints, they can't travel far or have photo sessions that take too long. Not only did Ken take the time to speak with me, ensure I selected a service perfect for a very sweet old lady, he did it all over the phone and via e-mail. A wedding, a baby, senior graduation can be a stressful time heck life is stressful altogether but when you are trying to capture these precious moments in life there is no people than Ken and Maggie Doll!!! They are absolutely amazing! There was NO stress, NO chaos!!! They know exactly what they are doing and make you feel so comfortable to relax and not worry because they go above and beyond with everything. You have a bad DJ at your wedding; don't worry about it, Ken has photographed so many weddings he gets to know you and your significant other as people so he knows what you are wanting and he can help without you stressing so if your DJs a dud don't worry with Ken as your photography you have nothing to worry about PLUS he used to be a DJ so he knows exactly how it should be done correctly! We went to Ken first and we signed papers before we left. Don't look anywhere else!!! If you can get Ken Doll you are set!! There is nothing left to worry about!! Our pictures are beyond gorgeous!! They are just such sincere down to earth people you can really relax and be yourself when your taking pictures and that's when you get the best photos not try to force anything... Trevor and I got so many great pictures and moments captured on film with our engagement photos our wedding photos and at our reception because we could just be our goofy silly selves and Ken captures the true meaning of love within the photos! He is always in the right place at the right time!! He is worth more than every penny you will spend. If you still aren't convinced after reading this just sit down and meet with him! Words cannot begin to explain how Ken and Maggie made me feel so special on my whirwind wedding day! They're amazing people, so fun to be around and truly gifted photographers. From engagement to wedding and every future life event we'll book them for...I just can't say enough good about Ken Doll Photography!!Our engagement session was during a crazy windy spell here in Kansas but we decided to rock it out with kite flying. Those were some of the most fun pictures and Ken was wonderful chasing us around (and even teaching us how to properly fly a kite.)Our wedding day was such a blur and there were so many things I didn't see, moments I missed in my starry-eyed gaze - but Ken caught them. One of my favorite shots was right before the ceremony when I laid my head on my dad's shoulder and had a "woosah" moment. Maggie was across the way from me and caught it - even though I didn't realize she was there! That's such a special memory for me with my dad. My husband has been wanting me to have boudoir photos taken for a long time, and I felt like I wasn't young enough anymore to do this. He was insistent and had decided that Ken Doll was the photographer that should take them. I got to meet Ken and see a little of his work. I was impressed and agreed to a photo session. We spent a morning in a hotel suite, with Ken coming up with all kinds of poses in various stages of dress. He put me at ease right away and I was very comfortable with him taking my pictures. He has a wonderful sense of humor and he's an expert at lighting and putting the person he is photographing in the best light and bringing out the best in them. The book he created is truly beautiful and the quality could not be better. It is something that my husband will treasure for the rest of his life. I highly recommend Ken and would encourage any woman who wants to give her husband a really special gift to go for a boudoir session with Ken Doll!
