I visited the Irish Center for the recent Irish Winter festival. It's located in the basement at Union Station. This is a homey, warm space. Chairs ringed the room when we visited, centered around a small central stage. There's a lovely little bar in the back where we purchased beers and cider from friendly volunteers.I'd like to explore the museum aspect here on a non-event day, but it was a very pleasant venue over all.

Kansas City Irish Center, I really, really like you. I like your events, I like that you support the Celtic Fringe, Gaelic Athletic Club, local bands and musicians, etc. I like that you are a warm, welcoming place for Celts of all backgrounds. I like that you're a cozy and comfortable space with friendly staff and volunteers and a nice (albeit limited) bar. I like the history that you promote and share, and all of the special events that you put on. (I have been lucky enough to attend several, and always have a good time.)What I don't like, and the reason that you're only getting 3 stars, though I think you deserve more, is the fact that you suck when it comes to promoting your special events! Case in point, the recent Irish Winter Festival, which I posted on Yelp. I had to do a ridiculous amount of digging to find the information so that I could post it. Or, your upcoming Whiskey tasting - not even the staff member (or volunteer?) we spoke to when we reserved it knew what time the tasting would be taking place!! Come on. If you want more people to attend your events, support the Irish community in Kansas City, and enjoy your welcoming space, put in a little bit of effort and put yourself out there a bit! Seriously, Irish Center - you're worth it. You deserve more. Don't be shy - do some advertising and let people know how great you are. Otherwise, we're all just missing out.

Small and hidden away in Union Station, but it was a sweet find which kept our Irish eyes smiling while we were there. Hands-on activities for the kids. A friendly docent kept things going. There are books, geneaology materials and a few pieces of schwag to buy if you're interested.
