This is what my poverty is worth. 11 points
This was the only meat product that I could get because it fit in the weight requirement and all the other things had to be put back
Points go fast when everything is 2 points and above

First off let me say that this isn't the first time that I have come to this place. I am a recent mover to the Lawrence area and I came here with my elderly mom taking care of her. When times got hard because my full-time job doesn't pay enough, I will come down to just food to get pantries for me and my mom. In the past I was very very pleased I was able to get enough food to last me and my mom for a while until I received a paycheck to tide us over. But today I experienced complete and utter disappointment. So much so that I have decided that I will never return to this place. In the past when I have came they had a system of where you could get a certain amount of items bread and fresh produce was always free and that allowed you to be able to get the things that you needed. I hadn't been in a while to this place because me and my mom were doing pretty okay for the time being. So much of 2018 I hadn't been coming to the food pantry. But due to a recent situation that was very tragic, I was forced to come to get food today. When I arrived I noticed that they had done some remodeling to the place nothing real different, but noticeable. But one thing that stood out was that they were out of food and they had just opened. Their facility opens at 9 a.m. I arrived at 10 a.m. and they were practically out of everything. I don't know whether this means that they're just now putting food out there, or whether workers are taking food home and leaving the dregs for the public, I don't know. I just don't remember it ever being like this. They also have a new point system which they try to encourage me was better than the system they had before. Alas it is not. I was informed that with two people in the home we only qualified for 20 points. The highest of family can qualify for is 60 points. So I carefully (with what was on the shelves which wasn't much), tried to find foods that could tide us over until I received a paycheck. At 17 points, I had a little bit of food smaller than I had ever had going to this place but it was sufficient it was enough to get us through. What I had most of was meat so that I can make meals with the meat. When I got to the line to check out, I was immediately told that most of the meat I had to put back because there was a weight limit on the meat. I wasn't told this when I first arrived I was told that everything was on a point system. Now I find that everything is on the point system but that the meat has a weight limit. Based on the weight limit I had to put back pork chops, and chicken and can only keep a package of bacon. I also wind up having to put a few other items back. When it was all said and done I was left with 11 points worth of food which is not nearly enough to feed one person let alone two. When the lady saw that they had put me in a position where I had less than a normal amount to support a family, they tried to fix it up by saying "oh well you can go and substitute something else." I looked them dead the eyes and said "with what? you have nothing on your shelves." Needless to say I left the pantry with this amount of food to support a family. Two cans of pears a package of bacon a loaf of bread a gallon of milk two salads and some squash. Can I make meals out of it? Probably but only for a day, maybe two if I'm lucky. What bothered me most about this entire thing is that while I was being told to put items back, I turned to my left and looked at a married couple with a baby who had four crates full of food and they weren't told to put anything back. It amazes me that if you pop out babies your hunger and poverty are more severe and more noteworthy than someone who hasn't had children I didn't know that poverty had a scale, I guess when I was born nobody told me that but with each day that I live I'm learning that it's true. Due to this change and how the facility is operating I will not be back. When my poverty is put beneath someone else's when we all are suffering, I'm the type that I'll slink back and I won't ask for help I'll just trying to keep making it on my own
