Went by myself to the Kansas City area to take in two Royals games an sample some KB BBQ. Wanted a reasonably priced room not too long a drive from the ballpark, and found this very clean and comfortable hotel in Independence MO. Private parking lot and coded entryways, quiet shaded patio. Moderately priced rooms. Just a swimming pool short of nirvana! My stay was during was the hottest week of the year, of course, but the air conditioning worked just fine, the bed was nice and soft, the shower pressure perfect. Books, sitting areas, quiet. Not modern, but tastefully furnished. All in all, a great find! And it was like staying with friends ... the front desk manager shared a backstreets route to the stadium with me, the trek under 15 minutes door to door! He also personally cooked breakfast in the morning! Can't wait to return when the Truman library re-opens!

This was a nice hotel. It was easily accessible with good parking. The room was very spacious. The water for the shower was hot but not steaming like I like to use. The breakfast was good, but I had the same thing the second day. I like variety.

I stayed the weekend in this hotel, and I would highly recommend it. I stayed in a King room. It was very clean and nice. The Garden area of the hotel was beautiful as well!

The hotel is very clean, cozy and quaint. I would call it a boutique hotel, but I'm glad they don't or they would charge $250 a night. There wasn't even dust in the corners or along the baseboard. The furniture in the rooms and around the hotel are antique or at least look like it. As are the artwork hanging on the walls. The hotel is also very quiet, I didn't even hear the air conditioner running. It appears to be family owned and run, as the front desk clerks said they lived there. They were a very nice friendly older couple. The person cleaning the rooms may have been family as well, all I know is that she is a meticulous cleaner. Friendly, affordable, clean and neat the stadium, this will be my new go to hotel when in KC.

The reviews on the various websites were positive and it was $75 a night, so I figured why not. If possible, I do enjoy trying out unique hotels, as opposed to the typical chains. It didn't click with me, though, until I stood at the front door (locked at 7:00pm) waiting (for a staffer to come open the door and let me in) what this hotel was all about... After seeing the halo in place of the dot above the "i" in their logo, things started to click.Do not let the religious aspect prevent you from staying here, though. Aside from a non-denominational prayer on the pillow, there was really nothing else religious about this place. In fact, what this place most resembles is a re-vamped college dorm. The layout is almost exactly like one of the dorms I lived in years and years ago. From the room itself to the hallways to the common areas - it's a dorm that wants to be a bed & breakfast. The entire hotel was welcoming and pristine. Bonus points for satellite TV. Decent bathroom. Very nice yard area (though, while I was here it was covered in snow). The best part, though - and, let's face it, when it comes down to it, this is the part that counts the most - was the bed. It was a fabulously comfy and warm bed. Soft, yet firm. Big, fluffy down comforter. Four extra-large pillows. It was one of my best hotel bed experiences.

Wow! What a great place to stay! This place doesn't look like much from the outside but it so lovely, immaculate and peaceful on the inside. It's filled with beautiful antiques and eclectic artwork. It's super quiet. The breakfast was delicious. I can't wait to go back!

I had reason to be in the KC area last week, and wanted to find a unicorn; a hotel close to where I needed to be, that was affordable, unique, clean, and comfortable. Higher Ground was exactly that. Well, not so much close to where I needed to be. I miscalculated that, but that's hardly a strike against the place. Heck, given the chance to do it all again, I'd still book here. The description of it being a boutique hotel got me interested. The insanely high ratings got my to click the button to book. This place deserves every star it's got. If asked to describe it, the best way I can is to sit you down in front of YouTube, cue up Pink's Beautiful Trauma video, and press play. This place is a time capsule of vibrant colors, Americana, and pin up nostalgia. The room was comfortable and well appointed. We had a mini fridge and keurig in the room. There's an on site massage therapist. But I didn't have the opportunity to visit them. The lobby is cozy. The business center is quiet, and there's a surprisingly well stocked guest library for guests who are looking for a paperback to pass the time with. Not being part of a chain, there was no trace of a sterile, corporate mentality either with the staff, or in the decor. It wouldn't surprise me if each room was decorated differently, with its own personality. When we arrived about an hour earlier than I had anticipated, the gentleman behind the counter joked that he wasn't expecting us yet. "We made 'good time'" I told him. He handed us two physical keys to our room, and a piece of paper with the wifi password, and code to the external doors. He also gave us a brief history lesson when we asked about the spire we'd passed on the way in to town. It's been decades since I took a civics class, but if I had the opportunity, I would return to Independence for an edutaining long weekend to take in the sightseeing. And that's thanks to the font of knowledge available from the man of many hats behind the front desk.If you're looking for a place to hang your hat for one night, or many, and are tired of cookie cutter, sterile, corporate hotels, please give the place a chance. It's unusual, friendly, clean, and well worth it even if you have to leave the beaten path slightly. Especially since you have to leave the beaten path.

This hotel is very clean, which I appreciate so much. It has a very unique boutique style decor and feel. They use actual keys(not cards) for room entry. We were responsible for remembering a code to get in the outside entrance. That was tolerable. Breakfast was just mediocre. Our room was large and spacey but our friends staying in another room had a tiny space! We had a king bed with a window. They had a queen bed with a skylight. There was a space under the door that let hallway light and noise in at night. I could have put a towel there but didn't. There was not a mini refrigerator in the room. Those are my only two room complaints. I was highly disappointed that the whole time we were in town for the Chiefs playoff game, they did not plow the parking lot. There was a huge snowstorm arriving as we arrived. On Friday they requested we park in a specific area for plow purposes. When we left Sunday, still no plow. I asked the front desk about the parking lot situation, they did not offer an apology. They only stated that they didn't know why it had notBeen plowed as of Sunday morning. I had to tell them we were pulling our vehicle to the door to load it, still no apology. The lack of snow removal was the biggest damper of our stay. I may come back, but not if there is snow!

I'm very sorry to report that Higher Ground Hotel has closed. I don't believe the owner was very well when we were there last. They may have decided they just couldn't run it any more. (My speculation) Someone was there taking care of the place for the new owners. He said another company had purchased it. I hope it will reopen as a hotel or bed and breakfast. If the former owners see this, thank you for years of a wonderful place to stay when in the historic Independence area!
