Quick snapshot of the man from Independence, MO.If you're interested in visiting the Truman house at 219 Delaware, you will need to stop here for tickets and a time slot. This site on Main will put you in touch with the NPS Rangers who will have you watch a short film about the 33rd President, his rise to the Presidency, and his rise attempt to normalize after leaving office. After the film you will have the opportunity to head over to Delaware and visit the Noland House (which belonged to his aunt and uncle), which houses a small assortment of Truman artifacts, or you can stroll from Independence Square (5 blocks to the house), along the same streets that President Truman walked before, during, and after his presidency. The house itself is as it was when Bess Truman passed away in the 1980s. Inside you will find a very unassuming life that her husband attempted to keep. He tried his best to not let his role as leader of the free world get to his head. Despite that, the former president was a point of interest for folks passing through Kansas City and Independence, Missouri.During the 30-ish minutes, Ranger led tour, you can't take photos, but you can certainly understand the Trumans did their best to live a peaceful and "normal" life and that's the way they lived the entire time. It's surprising how many generations of Trumans lived in that tiny little home, but they made the most of it.This site adds another touch to the life of the 33rd POTUS, and adds another layer to the exhibits you can see at the Truman Library and Museum down the road.

The people who work here are super helpful and knowledgeable about Truman. They know the sites. They saved me lots of time with their tips. They were great in giving you the necessary information you needed to explore this area that is rich with the history of the 33rd President. I highly recommend them.

Craig Hockenberry:I enjoyed walking the the same streets as Harry S. Truman in a great city and in a great state. I went to his tomb, his library and his home. CRAIG HOCKENBERRY

After visiting the Truman home at 219 Delaware I have a newfound respect for the Truman family. This is mostly due to the fact that the Truman family stole the original copy of the painting of the first lady from the Whitehouse, and they did nothing about it. Also the inference that the Whitehouse is the "white jail" is highly amusing and speaks to the isolation of world leaders and their people. Once you become the leader of an Empire, there is no return to normal life. Also, the fact that other world leaders and other celebrities sat on that hideous blue couch is also highly amusing.5/5 Would accidently set off buzzers to nonpermitted areas again.

We were blessed that 219 Delaware has recently reopened for ranger-led tours ! What a gem! The house has been living preserved according to Bess' will. It is unexpectedly homey for a man of such stature. Worth the time to learn about the President and First Lady. Across the street is another home you can tour as well that Truman's aunt and uncle owned. When you stop by the visitor's center to sign up for the tour, take a peak at the book with photos of the 2nd floor. You won't be able to tour that part of the house. Sorry no photos allowed in the home.

This review relates to the tour of Harry Truman's house only and not to the Visitors Center located 5 blocks away. We were very disappointed with the visitors center but did enjoy the brief film. The house tour, on the other hand, while only 30 minutes long, was very good. The ranger was very knowledgeable and relayed a lot of information regarding the Truman's. His tour was very informative. No photos allowed in the house and all cell phones must be shut off. No literature at the house / only at the visitors center.Important note - don't miss the Nolan House (his cousin's house) directly across the street. Free admission/lots of nice displays and good information.

I highly recommend a tour of the Truman home. Located a few blocks from the visitor center where there was a few exhibits souvenirs and a movie. The tour was conducted by a volunteer ranger who was very knowledgeable. The tour was about 30 minutes that walked through the ground floor only as the upper floor was not stable to support a tour. The house is just as it was at Mrs Truman's death. I would have liked to walked around the yard and seen his last car

The house tour was great. I had just come from the Presidential Library but the tour here was the most interesting because you got to know Truman more as a man than as a president. I'm mixed on my opinion of his politics (some good, some bad) but I really appreciate the humility with which he lived - one part that stuck out to me is that they shoe stolen hotel soap they had in their house - what could be more relatable? He lived his life post presidency like a common man in a family home and again, I really respect that. The tour was great - terrific tour guide that provided us a lot of information about Harry, his family, and the house itself. You'll definitely want to do both the library and the house, but this was my favorite part, for sure.

I am glad that this house and outbuildings are being maintained; however, I would not go out of my way to go on the tour. It is rather short and has some interesting things to see, but at the end of the day, you don't get much content you couldn't read online. It is free and demand seems low, so worth stopping by if in area, but not a destination in my book.

One of the simpler Presidential home tours? Maybe, but worth every moment to see how this modest, practical man and his family lived both before and after their years in the White House.Given that maliciously stupid, patently xenophobic, utterly evil, thoroughly corrupt, and unspeakably cruel piece of orange sh*t who currently usurps the Oval Office, well, Harry Truman (with all his petty flaws) seems a virtual saint in comparison. (And don't even get me started on the vast gulf that exists between staid, common sensical Bess versus that trashy Slovenian porn model.)Take the tour here. Trust me.It's well organized, full of facts (something one doesn't often see in this age of duplicity), and worth every moment of your time.
