My first memories of Harper's Fabric are from seventeen years ago when, as a girl, I would take sewing classes from Elaine in the basement of the shop (then located in Prairie Village). They still teach sewing classes to children and adults, and it is well worth checking out their online newsletter and open houses to find out what classes are available. The selections of fabrics are great, but most of the fabric is in the range of cottons that are suited to quilting. There are also a wide variety of patterns and kits available for purchase for those with the skills who are in need of inspiration. If you're in the market for a machine, I highly recommend that you check out the selection here. They are very knowledgeable and will even give you a lesson in how to work the many features of your new machine.

Grandma's old quilt never looked so good. The idea of quilts being too 'country' is a thing of the past. Women of all backgrounds and personal styles are flocking here to either create their own piece or purchase one from someone else. And looking around the store, with quilts hing high on the walls like paintings - it's clear to me that quilting has itself become an art-form. From the women of Gees Bend made famous by Oprah for their quilts from the past century and older to the coming of age art nouveau quilts, there is a movement here growing stronger and making a leap from practicality to artistry. I am amazed by it. Harper's is at the heart of it in Kansas City. It sells hundreds of fabrics, masterfully organized by color and harmony so that you can easily select your own quilt patches. They also sell prepackaged kits that allow you to reproduce a quilt you like but wish to make yourself with instructions included. They also do classes, from beginners to advanced, and focused not only on quilt-making but also on stitching purses and clothing - so it's a very versatile craft to get involved in. If you have a little girl, they offer many youth classes she might be interested in. I just wish someone in my immediate family made quilts because it is such a beautiful and useful thing.

I love Harpers, but their fat quarter prices are extremely high. Possibly the highest in the metropolitan area. Also, I'm going to keep an eye on the measurements of the fat quarter. i love it that they carry the Hoffman Challenge fabrics, cut them to fat quarters.I love their fabric, it's all high end quilt fabric. They specialize in White/Husquvarna machines and Pfaff.I had a look around and everything is still up to date. But the those fat quarters, which I only like to collect when I'm in the area cost more than the other shops. They have a quilting group that meets monthly. It's a bit far for me to drive, considering the shop in Lee's summit. So I only stop at Harpers if I'm in the area.

Loved the variety of different fabrics, so great examples to give you ideas! Was greeted at the door by a pleasant woman. She helped me get my fabrics cut and made sure I had enough fabric with a little extra for the project I was going to be buying and putting together. Easy location to find, but could see parking could be busy. Found some nice items on clearance also, so I got a little bonus fabric I didn't expect to get. Cute decorations and this store has a classroom, to teach classes and have special speakers.

So I'm a guy who has no idea how to sew, but I know enough to be able to spot a quality shop and exceptional staff. My wife and I were walking around at the farmers market one Saturday and decided to stop in and see about a sewing classes for our 11 year old daughter. Honestly the wife an I expected a bit of a uppity reception from the ladies working but we couldn't have been more wrong. From the moment we walked in we were greeted and treated wonderfully. Given all the information for the classes and shown all the different projects available for those taking classes. After leaving with the info we enrolled our daughter in one of the intermediate classes (prices differ for classes, but are between 25-40 for instructor lead 3 hour classes). The classes are amazing here Morgan is great with the kids and my daughter has improved her sewing skills greatly. My daughter loved coming back to Harpers for each of the classes. So there you go. Review from a guy for harpers. I'm amazed I wrote it, but it is such a great place, I had to let people know.

Harper's is my happy place. I decided to take up sewing after having my daughter and it has been a joy. From the first time I stepped in to look around, everyone has been super friendly and helpful. I learned something new every time I'm there - even when I'm just popping in to pick up more fabric. The classes are great. I love this place!!
