One day I was shopping at another grocery store in KCK. I was looking for any good deals on meat. This young guy is there doing the same and kind of moaning and groaning about the prices. He tells me I should check out Happy Foods West because they always have good meat prices. Well, many months later, I decide to head over there to see what they might have for Easter. I ended up buying 3 things. They have a huge selection of meat...cuts and parts and pieces you don't just find anywhere. They had a huge case of turkey tails, for instance. The thing is, the prices aren't that good, plus it's obvious that much of the meat has been frozen A LOT, probably because they don't get much foot traffic. If it was a bargain, I might consider a freezer burned, bruised up pork chop, but the only bargains I saw were 38 cent Budding meats that expired over 2 months ago and a GREEN piece of pork shoulder that probably should have been taken out of the discount bin around Christmas. We bought a pound of bacon (packaged) and two Lunchables and headed straight to the other store I had been at when I heard about Happy Foods West and bought meat for Easter.

Many people had told that this grocery store had cheap meat. Upon finally getting over to this place, I was disappointed. It was not any cheaper than the grocery stores closer to my home. I can believe that this is a cheaper version in the KCK area. However, with there being so much competition in JCO on every block, it made Wild Woody's just seem reasonable. The other thing I do not understand about KCK grocery stores. Why so small? I am like Kramer in Seinfeld and having the gigantic driving lanes. My cart and I need S P A C E .

I went because they gave a good selection of meats but the place is not kept well and not the cleanest. But this is what I don't understand. I brought in my insulated tote to not waste a plastic bag. As soon as I stepped in some guy ran me down and told me to give him my bag. Ok fine. I am guessing they have theft issues. But what I don't understand is that once checking out I couldn't use my bags. The cashier still bagged my groceries in a million plastic bags. No other store that Im accustomed to does this.

This store is no longer in business. It was sold, and reopened as Fresh Market. This was a great move! I very seldom shopped at Happy Foods, even for bread or milk, because it just never was fresh, even if the Date was still good. And the place always smelled bad. Now, the stuff is always good, even the meats, which were questionable before.

Well, I disagree with the above comment.1st--I grew up in Turner. This store used to be a "hole-in-the-wall." I now live in Johnson County. I wanted to make tamales, so I was looking for Boston Pork Butt/Shoulder. My sister had just made made a Sunday meal and told me to try out Woody's. She bought her's for $1.29/lb! You can't find that ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i bought a 9 lb Pork Butt. Everywhere else was $1.69/lb and MORE!2nd--this store has changed DRAMATICALLY since I was a little girl-- 40 years ago! It is VERY CLEAN!!!! Not all the Fancy-Smacy's, but it's clean!! Very nice Staff too!! Don't KNOCK this little store. I went in there the FIRST time in 40 years--I was IMPRESSED! It's not a Price Chopper or Hen House, but it's clean! I couldn't believe the prices on the Pork and Beef items!! I will tell you--give them more business than just meat buys. It will help them more so and further give us better deals on other items in the future. Considering going there today...

I call B.S. on Claudia S.'s review. I have shopped at Happy Foods West for 5 years, and have never seen outdated or "green" meat products. Granted, they do have a few "bargin" carts around the store, with a few outdated item, but they are all dry goods, never meat or dairy, etc. Yes, the building is outdated and old, but are a great grocery and serve their neighborhood quite well.
