I've been fairly intrigued by this place since I started passing it almost everyday. It's actually called Wild Willy's Happy Food Center, it's painted all in brown and has a cowboy painted across. Honestly, it reminds me of a stereotypical country western establishment. I couldn't help but be intrigued, especially considering the surrounding neighborhood. Finally stopped in the other day. First off, I got the stare. You may not know what stare I'm talking about, but it's the stare you get when you don't quite fit in. Despite being dressed like a vagabond that day, I still got it. "Damn crazy white folks." Even the couple white folks that passed me gave me that look. But I digress.I walk in past the lovely gates and go through a turnstyle. It's a low end supermarket. What disappoints me is that the first thing you see when you walk in is bags of chips and other snack items for the first full row. My friend did a thesis or some other project on how markets in inner city areas don't promote health so it was really disheartening to see the first row as the chips aisle. The veggie aisle was next and really small. For the most part it's like your average city supermarket. Nothing special. There were two things that did make it stand out, though. If you need hot sauce, this place has the best damn supermarket collection I ever seen. Also, please see Exhibit A (the picture above). That alone makes me want to give the place 5 stars.

I passed this place after making a wrong turn and decided, OMG, I HAVE to check out a place called Wild Woody's Happy Foods! I read the 1 other review on Yelp and saw she gave it 2 only stars so I was a little worried. She said people gave her "the stare" and, being a blonde and blue eyed gal, I'm familiar with that "you're clearly not a regular here" look. I parked and took the risk of taking a photo of the front of the store which screams "you're clearly not a regular here". As I walked through the store, I was greeted and offered help by Willie, a very nice man who stocks shelves and probably a whole lot more. I walked the aisles and couldn't help but notice, everything looked very organized, clean and well stocked. It had a small community charm and everyone I spoke to including patrons, cashiers and managers could not have been more polite and friendly. I love this place and recommend, if you're in the KC area, check it out. Don't just be a tourist though, talk to the people, buy something, embrace the experience of a small, urban market. Pictures will be posted.

This is a piss poor page for any store......no weekly ads or any thing of value to the consumer other than the address!

Wild Woodys Happy Foods goes back a very long way. They were part of a surplus/Rail commodity type store (Wild Woodies that was at Noland and I-70 for a very long time. Happy Foods opened on the South half of that building. When Wild Woodys closed, they moved to the present location on 31st street. They have long been known for deals on different kinds of meat - some are the harder to find rough cuts you don't see much. They offer some meats in larger boxes, just right if you are doing a grill party with friends in the park. The people have always been nice when I go there and they DO have their own butchers cutting meat. Smaller selection of veggies, but sufficient for most needs. Not a lot of brands, but prices are pretty good across the board. Great place to get things like Rib Tips and Ribs. They also carry some lamb, rabbit, etc. Doing soup or stock, they even have turkey tails and such to make your stock richer. They now have I think 3 locations, but have only been to the central one.

While the area isn't the best, I was always treated with respect there and the staff was very helpful. When I lived in the neighborhood I used to shop at Happy Foods every week. We were on a very tight budget. With their low prices and unusual brands we actually ate quite well without resorting to deep fried processed food. What always impressed me was the selection of specialty meats like rabbit, lamb, Mountain oysters and assorted innards along with canned Poke Salad and dandelion greens. Everyone should go there at least once.
