Go Driving School

I can't believe I'm the first to review, but then again this is Kansas. How many Yelpers need a driving school? Well I did, absolutely. I hadn't touched a steering wheel since I totaled my old junker 15 years ago. Between that and being in multiple wrecks as a passenger I'd been terrified of driving ever since. Somewhere along the way I started saying "I can't drive" rather than "I don't drive".As it turns out I'm doing at least a little better than I thought and I've made great progress in a short time. I even rented a car and drove all over town for a day- something I'd never done before and never thought I would. I'm learning so much more than I ever learned in Driver's Ed at my poor high school (they graduated students who couldn't read a newspaper) or from my parents.Lawrence at least makes some effort but does not have a true full-fledged public transit system. (There's no service at all on Sundays just for example.) It's nothing like Chicago or even Milwaukee. If you've never been without a car for years on end anywhere in (most of) the Midwest then I probably can't explain what it's really like. It's like some kind of second or third class citizenship. You have to have a car or at least be able to drive here. There's just no way around it.Now I can say instead just that "I don't have a car", which is certainly a step up, and I'm working on that. I'll have a down payment February if not sooner. It's a big step forward and I could not have done it without excellent, professional, patient, and highly effective instruction.

I cannot imagine a better driving instructor. Walter is exactly what we wanted in a driving instructor for our teenager. He takes safety, skill development and understanding of the law very seriously, yet knows how to talk in a way that students really like. He is calm and encouraging when our kid is behind the wheel, giving instruction, re-enforcing what is correct, practicing over and over on the skills our child found most difficult, while all the time very respectful and kind (and funny!) with our kid. The course is broken into two parts: required classroom hours and one-on-one behind the wheel time. Both were excellent. Walter is very flexible with the scheduling, so you can do the classroom time by breaking it into small chunks (weekend or evening times) over a number of weeks, or in larger chunks so you complete it right away. When we needed to switch things around and re-schedule, it was easy.For the classroom hours, he has a good sized office and classroom downtown, and parking behind in the Lawrence Arts Center parking lot is easy (with alley access) or Mass St. access if you use street parking. I sat in on part of a class when I arrived early to pickup my child, and was impressed with his very interactive format of lecture combined with asking the kids to respond, write things down, etc. Everyone was awake!~Once the classroom time is completed, Walter arranges driving times with you via email, and he's willing to meet you either downtown, or if in Lawrence, he'll come and pick you up somewhere else. It's very handy. He takes you all over the place, including the freeway, residential streets, and busy city streets. My child always came home feeling proud of the accomplishments, encouraged for the next round of practice, and happy with Walter's company. Warning: he feeds them cookies (he uses the carrot, not the stick!) Thank you Walter for teaching our child to drive so successfully!!

This driving school is the best! It is very reasonably priced! Walter is awesome! The instruction was very understandable and thorough. Scheduling driving sessions was very easy and lots of flexibility with days/times. Walter truly cares about his students and making sure they are prepared while being very funny and entertaining. I highly recommend!
