If you ever find yourself in South Kansas City craving some south of the border flavor and flair then look no further than this unassuming, charming family owned restaurant tucked into a quaint strip mall. El Rincon Latino Restaurant is one of the many Latin owned and operated restaurants near Grandview in Kansas City Missouri however, what makes this strip mall standby standout is the emphasis on El Salvadorian cuisine instead of the traditional Mexican or Tex-Mex offerings. Also, bonus points for them being opened early in the morning to feed those traditional A.M. working commuters though, me personally, I have never tried their breakfast offerings. The morning menu seems to consist of some hearty South American staples such as Huevos Rancheros and a breakfast burrito as well as a meal that includes 2 sweet corn tamales and a cup of coffee. The national dish of El Salvador is the papusa and El Rincon has many varieties of these on their menu, most are also vegetarian. My ultimate favorite is the one with zucchini and cheese filling but, if you are trying to be the most authentic with your filling choice then the cheese and loroco, a traditional vegetable grown in El Salvador, Guatemala, and other central American countries, would be the correct choice. The loroco is described as a mixture of artichoke and asparagus with a slight floral essence. I would describe the texture of the papusa itself as close to that of an arepa but without the presence of corn-meal or masa, the dough itself is closer to a thicker flour tortilla, sort of..maybe. Well, anyway that you try to describe these griddled UFO-looking stuffed El Salvadorian goodies isn't going to be as good as a just eating one! (Or two, or three, especially with a price just below $3 a piece they are definitely worth trying a few) Also, do not skip out on the accoutrements that come with the papusas, there is a very thin watery slightly spicy tomato based sauce (perhaps a salsa of sorts) and an amazing pickled vegetable slaw condiment that takes any of the papusas up a notch, I'm assuming these are traditional accompaniments you'd find in El Salvador when ordering this type of street food. But don't count out El Rincon for other unique South of the Border street food as well such as, sopes, gorditas, tostadas (barbacoa one is excellent) as well as great prices on street tacos- under $2 daily?! Heck to the Yes!

Ordered 3 tacos Asade, a chicken fajita and enchiladas. I would have been better off saving the money and buying a frozen burrito, Lean Cuisine or Taco Bell. This place has horrible food. Everything was bland. The fajita was just unseasoned chicken and some cheese in a tortilla... boring. The only thing I could taste was way too much cumin in the rice. AVOID this place!

This place is amazing. A Salvadoran Restaurant that has papusa - like tortillas that come with some of the best tasting chicken fajitas I've ever had. The rice wasn't like typical Mexican style rice but had instead a chicken broth flavor. The beans were thick retried black beans. They have two sauces that you squirt out instead of salsa that you spoon out. Guacamole comes with thick chips and the guacamole was thinner, more lime and more flavorful than other places. I would give it 6 stars if I could. I have eaten at 100s or 1000s of Mexican or Salvadoran restaurants and I honestly think this was the best.

My opening day lunch was very good. The three chicken tacos ($1.69 each) were served with a smile just four minutes after I ordered at the table. They had a good amount of tasty, moist, white chicken on somewhat small, fresh tortillas with fresh toppings. Two salsas were available, and each was flavorful in its own way. The red salsa was nice and hot. Bottled and canned drinks were also available. The dining area was clean and nice with Mexican background music and a TV. I especially liked the friendly, cheerful, helpful service. Very nice.

My husband and I love trying local authentic spanish foods and especially taquerias and this one is just delightful. They have a great menu involving salvadoran foods and authentic spanish staples like tacos, tamales and rice. The pupusa is so yummy! Free wifi, a movie or TV to watch and a nice staff makes this a new favorite! The tamales were very moist and fluffy, and the tacos were excellent. The sauces they offer, a red and green one are both quite spicy, the red being hotter. They also offer Grubhub delivery so you don't even need to leave the comfort of your home!

The pupusas were worth the trip! It was slightly challenging finding this place, because it is tucked into a corner of a shopping center. The front was crowded with diners, but the side room had plenty of space. It's a modest little restaurant, so no need to dress up. The food was delicious, hot, and they gave us plenty of salsa and cabbage to go with our pupusas. It's not easy finding Salvadoran food in the area, so we will definitely be back for more soon!
