This is how the cabeza meat looked like. All rolled up in balls like it has been sitting on the heat for too long. Crusty and burnt.

I had heard this place was awesome, and finally got to try it. I was pretty disappointed. I thought the tacos were okay, but not great. The pastor was a bit on the dry side. The carne asada didn't really have any flavor. The interior of the restaurant was pretty dirty and had some boarded up windows. Good enough if you are in the area and hungry for tacos, but not something I'd seek out.

Like KC BBQ restaurants, I have about 10 places in my Top 3 favorites of taco joints in KC, and I think El Rey del Taco may have bumped its way to my top spot after my first visit today.I stopped by on my way to work at noon today and the place was full. I was fortunate to get a table inside so I didn't have to sit on one of the out-side benches or eat in my vehicle. I enjoyed 2 pastor and a carne asada taco. They were perfect! At $5 for the plate of 3, I felt guilty for not paying more. The meats had flavors that most places would love to be able to replicate. I was especially intrigued by the asada that was diced so small that it looked more like ground beef but had a crispy steak flavor. Plenty of sauces and pickled veggie toppings at the condiment bar but the best addition is the pile of sauteed chunks of onions that come with the plate.I can't wait to go back!

An excellent little authentic Mexican place. Doesn't look like much from the outside. Don't let that deceive you. Excellent staff and everything from tacos to burritos is delicious.

Tacos are $2.25 each I ordered pastor, asada and carnitas. All three tacos were outstanding. Meat overflowing in tacos. I will come back for sure. Plus open late 10pm but Friday and Saturday they stay open until midnight. Staff was very helpful and nice. I'm going to order some more to take with me later.

Yet another bit of proof Kansas City has become a seriously good town for street tacos. El Rey del Taco stands a bit above many other taquerias I've visited, and I've visited more than my share. Why there are only four reviews as of this moment is simply evidence the street taco crowd in KC is not on its toes. This is seriously good, worth seeking out in my opinion. What I had: pastor, tripas, carnitas, cabeza. What I liked that stood out: exceptionally small dice of red onions (most use white or yellow), plate that comes with sauteed onions and cucumber on the plate, not as a side, meats that are both crispy yet moist. Read that last bit. How they achieved that had me pretty impressed. The tortillas were heated, small bit of oil yet within reason. Truly sublime. The avocado tomatillo sauce was smoking hot, the orange a tad milder than would have expected. No complaints on either. The meats: possibly a tad more "barnyard" in the tripas and cabeza, something I actually enjoy. YMMV.All combined, a brilliant plate that cost me under $7 minus drink. Place was full at 1:30 in the afternoon, more evidence people get what's going on here. Nothing else fancy, just your regular burritos, quesadillas and tortas offered. If you come: MasterCard and Visa accepted, you can order online. Wide variety of Jarritos and saw the requisite sign Menudo can be available at times, another positive. Small, dedicated lot parking. Order at the window inside, they'll bring to your table. ¿Ellos hablan inglés? Si!

OMG!!!! So freaking good!! Again this was in the KC magazines top 35 taco joints. This location is known for their Tripas Tacos, and they did not disappoint!! We also ordered some Al Pastor, which were amazing. Tacos are served with sliced radishes, limes, and cucumbers on the side. The selection of salsas are so good. My favorite was the tomatillo based salsa. We will definitely return. Side note they are currently take-out only. They do have a few small tables outside if you want to eat onsite.

Authentic and the best alternative than going to a taqueria in KCK. They have an easy and small menu which means whatever they do they do it so damn well and it reflects in the quality of food and service. This place is 'on-point'.

This is without question one of the top five taquerias in KC. Everything is legit, every essential element is on point: meat is seasoned expertly, tortillas fresh and grilled properly, salsas are killer, add-ons (grilled onions, cukes, etc) are included. Not exactly the greatest atmosphere but that matters not to a true taco aficionado! Tacos are just $1.50 each and the menu is very limited, with just tortas, quesadillas, tacos and burritos, but empires are build with less.

I had six tacos three Al pastor and three asada. This was the first Mexican restaurant in a long time that I was able to taste the pineapple in the meat. The tacos were decent size and actually had two corn tortillas so they didn't fall apart. The service was OK. The one lady tried to take my order again not very attentive. The ambience wasn't that spectacular with the homeless guy weighing every piece of cake in the cooler to get every gram he could for his dollar but I would've had no problem sitting down and eating. I got mine to go.

Food was good however, the young boy cashierTold us the lettuce and tomatoes come on the side which was a LIE! I told him I'm eating my food later and don't want to warm up the veggies...that make the burrito terrible! Do better with knowing your product young boy.
