If I ever give food suggestions, one thing for sure is that I'm never going to recommend Mexican. Nothing against Mexican food but I am just a firm believer that Mexican dishes all taste similar.. anyway! This has become my #1 taco spot in KC and if you are looking for authentic street tacos, come here! My mom wanted to stop by since this taco spot recently opened up a seated area so instead of ordering at their "pick up" window, you can finally eat here. Now this taco place is in a rougher neighborhood but I feel like with some of the best places in town, you kinda have to venture out. If you do not feel comfortable driving here, opt for just ordering to go. I ordered the classic asada (steak) burrito so I can compare it to most Mexican spots here in KC and I would have to say that this place takes the number one spot for tacos and burritos. The burrito is packed with onion, cilantro, your choice of meat, tomatoes, sour cream, cheese, rice, and beans.. and these burritos are massive! I was only able to eat one half of mine. I took a bite of the burrito and was throughly impressed, I feel as though a lot of places tend to be pretty greasy but this place gets it right. The varieties of salsa that are offered are also very very good. (Green salsa was my favorite) Honorable mention goes to the Horchata beverage I had. (Not overly sweet, hit the spot). The service here is super quick, only took about 5 minutes to get our food and there isn't a whole lot of staff here. Ambiance is... fine. But I care much more about the quality of the food rather than the ambiance. *This place is CASH only!! *Street parking is pretty much what you'll need to settle for. *Order to go if you do not feel comfortable visiting this part of town.

My 1st attempted visit to El Guero was a Saturday afternoon several years back, only to find that they do not open until 6pm. On my second attempted visit, I found that they do not have seating, so my buddy and I traveled on down the street. On my third attempted visit I realized that they only accept cash, so once again i moved along rather than go find an ATM. Last night I was prepared with cash in hand at 9pm and driving a truck with a tailgate I was destined for an authentic St John Ave. Friday night.I ordered my standard 3 tacos - 2 pastor, 1 asada and waited along the sidewalk with the other locals. In about 5 mins my plastic bag was being passed through the bars on the walk-up window and I proceeded to my tailgate to spread out my miniature feast of $7.50. Along with the tacos I was given 2 sauces (green avocado and red heat), a bag of radishes - way too many, and a packet of grilled onions and jalapeno; just as a true taqueria should serve. The tacos were very good but not as life changing as some have reported or as good as many other places have served, in fact the pastor was a tad stringy and chewy. I did like the overall experience of a tailgate party for one, along with multiple other trucks and customers along the street while listening to mariachi music blaring from a random vehicle, watching KCPD zooming by with lights pulsating, street bikes and hotrods doing burn-outs while families sauntered down the sidewalk. It was easy for my mind to wander back to scenes of late nights and street food in my travels to major Mexican metros of years past. Go for the food, stay for the show - not for the faint of heart.Food - 4 starsAuthenticity - 5 stars

These tacos are legit! The closest I've had to the tacos you find at small street stands throughout Mexico! Each taco was a double tortilla, warmed softly on the griddle with just a touch of grease. They had about 6-7 meat options. I tried al pastor, chorizo, cabeza (head meat), and lengua (tongue). They were all great! My kids and husband tried the burritos and they were great too! The food is well portioned and they also throw in sauteed onions/jalapeños and fresh lime, radish, cilantro, onion, and cucumber--very traditional acoutrement for tacos in Mexico. It's a 35min drive for us but we'll be back! FYI there is no seating available-you order and stand to eat, eat in your car, or take to go.

Very good street tacos. Asada are excellent, pastor is good, but what really steals the show is the tripa. If you feel weird about eating organ meat, I strongly advise venturing out of your comfort zone for these delicious, salty, greasy, crispy pieces of absolute bliss.Outside of the meats, they do many things right. Double corn tortillas that are warm and fresh, onions and cilantro, a delicious, creamy avocado salsa that packs a pretty great kick. I don't love their red salsa (a little too tomato-y for me) and their green is just alright in my opinion (very citrusy so mixes well in small amounts with the avocado salsa but not ideal on its own), but the meats, the simplicity, and the incredible price point make this worth regular trips.

Dear God of street tacos -How can I express my gratitude when my belly and arteries are so full of your gracious tripa tacos? How can I fall to my knees and praise you when all I feel I can do is lay down my head and rest and slip into a food coma? How can I properly thank you for one of the greatest gifts you've bestowed upon the Kansas City food scene? How can I thank you for El Güero?Give me the strength to make the long pilgrimage from Lawrence to your little hidden mecca on St. John. Ave. when I need true love and world class tacos. In the name of cilantro, onions, savory meats and soft shells...Amen

This place is really good. I had 4 Tacos Asada at $2 each. Comes with a side of cucumbers and radishes, and grilled onions and a jalapeño. On my first visit I had no idea what was going on, so if you speak no Spanish like me, here's what you do: order from the small window with bars on it. I googled the meats listed on the wall. Then you just kind of watch until he yells something at you and hands you your meal in a plain plastic bag. If Im hungry for real street tacos, this is where I go!
