I took a little day trip out of Kansas City today and when I realized that I would be near Wellington, I made the point to stop at Catfish Charlie's for a late Sunday lunch. A co-worker told me about this place. Her and her husband jump on their Harley and come here occasionally. It seems to be frequented by bikers and has a nice double tiered deck that overlooks a small river that empties into the Mighty MO just around the bend and with being right next to the train tracks and the entire building being elevated by stilts for flood protection; Catfish Charlies has an old school remote roadhouse vibe. I was eager to visit.I sat at the bar dining solo and had miserable service. The two waitresses that I had interaction with seemed like they had just ridden in non-stop from a biker rally 24 hours away in bad weather and needed sleep or just hated humanity. Never once a smile or "how ya doing", the kind of things that usually make small town America so charming - not here. I ordered the catfish basket since catfish is in the name of the establishment. For $10 - no issues with the price - I received 3 small fillets, 2 hushpuppies, a few fries and tartar sauce. The plate was set down on the waitresses trip across the floor, so I wasn't able to ask for my mandatory hot sauce until 1/2 way through my meal when I was able to ask for it when one of the surly waitresses came behind the bar to retrieve a drink while completely ignoring me. The catfish was truly unremarkable, in fact I had a few catfish fillets from a grocery store to-go deli counter for lunch last week that were much better. Simply for the lack of customer service, I would never return, but I see how if your a local in this town with a population of 700, it could be your only option for food or drinks and the patio view is decent.

If you're ever near Wellington, MO I highly encourage making a detour to stop here. This restaurant sits next to a river/large creek. You walk in and feel that small town at home feel. The inside is clean and not super congested or crowded. It was too cool and rainy to sit outside, but I definitely can't wait to go back to sit on the deck. We order appetizers and meals. I love how you can create your own sampler appetizer of all the appetizers. We had fried mushrooms, fried oysters, and spinach artichoke dip with chips. The oyster and mushrooms were piping hot and delicious. The ranch was amazing and the oysters were also served with tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. I can be very picky on both these sauces and I really enjoyed them both. They taste like they are made in house. The dip was good and served hot, but my absolute favorite part were the chips. They fry them and season them with salt (I didn't have to salt my chips like I do almost everywhere). These chips not only are fresh they also are think enough to withstand dipping in a thick dip. You get a great amount of food of the appetizers so be careful not to get full before dinner is served (I have learned my lesson). For dinner I ordered the fried catfish dinner with fries and green beans. (I had a lot of fried food so thought I should include something green). The catfish was amazing, not dry and seasoned perfectly. The fries were hot and crispy. The green beans...oh man. Those green beans surprised me because they were the best green beans I have ever had! Just order them, you will not be disappointed. I wanted to give a 4.5 stars. There were just a couple small items holding it back from a 5 star review. They charge 3% of you use a credit card (I get it, those fees can hurt a small business). If you'd like to avoid that fee bring cash. I just normally don't have cash, but the food is worth the 3%. I also wish they offered a few more green or healthy options. (Granted I could order the catfish blackened instead of fried). I'd love to see less starch and carb options. I mean if they can make green beans taste so good, I'd love to see what they could do with other vegetables. Overall great food, great service, and great atmosphere!

I've been wanting to try this restaurant and finally did this evening! My husband, daughter, and I went after visiting Lexington. The views from the deck are so pretty! We sat inside but if dining during sunset, I would highly recommend sitting on the deck. We decided to try the mushrooms and alligator bites for appetizers. The alligator was so great and came with a tasty remoulade sauce. It was my daughter's first time trying alligator and she was impressed. The mushrooms were okay. Not bad but not the best. My daughter and I split sea hogs for dinner. OMG. The shrimp were huge, wrapped in bacon, and with this fantastic sauce. A definitive must try! It came with a side salad and baked potato, which were great. My husband ordered the fish bucket. It was a bucket filled with catfish and hushpuppies, with a side of fries. The breakout star was the catfish, which was battered, seasoned, and fried perfectly. I stole a couple of bites and it was fantastic! Our waitress was attentive and super friendly. We will definitely be back!

They were playing bingo when we arrived. It was stated that it's something they do every Friday night. At the conclusion of bingo people got up and started conga lining around the room to Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars. The food was about a 6 on the scale of 10. The mac n cheese was good. The fries weren't fresh. The hush puppies were good. The fried mushrooms and fried okra needed a bit more seasoning and different breading. Oh and there was a bug in my Hurricane beverage so I had to send that back.

Food is decent, just takes a LONG while to get out to the tables. Be mindful that the bartender might not know what they're doing. I ordered two different whiskeys neat and they came out in a cup FULL of ice. Whiskey neat is supposed to be just the whiskey, nothing else at all.

Went with some friends on a Sunday in the middle of the afternoon. It wasn't real busy but there were several people there. This is not a fancy place, more like a diner, but the food was delicious. And although their menu had a lot of choices on it, I had to try the fried catfish, fries, and creamy coleslaw dinner. It did not disappoint. As I said to our sweet server, I will be back!
