Erin W. "We were in the area on Sunday afternoon and thought it would be fun to come try out this winery. They didn't have their hours online, so I called and Pam answered and was very nice. They do appointments when they are not open, so we made one and headed over. There is not an easy to see from the road sign, so either set your gps or keep an eye out for the mailbox. The tasting room is up the stairs on the right and has an amazing view of their vines. There is a patio between the tasting room and their house that they have music occasionally or even would be a great place to relax with friends. The wines range from styles and tastes, but were all very good. I was even surprised with the Concord because I'm a mostly dry drinker and normally can't come close to drinking Concord, but they had a good wine that was sweet, but not a tongue shock sweet. Pam was super nice and we had a great time trying wines and having great conversation. We added ourselves to the mailing list so that we will know when events happen, because we will be back!"

Abby P. "I was able to make a super impromptu trip to Fountain City Winery before meeting up with a fried in a nearby West Bottoms spot. They were close to closing but the owner still accommodated a tasting for me. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the wine and you could tell he was super passionate about what he was doing. As it turns out, his wife does the art for the bottles! They were super fun and impressive. True to their brand, each bottle is based on a different fountain in Kansas City. The wine itself is good but the artwork on the bottles is even better if you ask me! I am such a loyal KC girl and kinda obsessed with all of that culture, so it sucked me in! The location is so prime down in the West Bottoms and the space itself is amazing and historic. I loved being in that space with it's high ceilings and wood floors. I think doing the flight is the way to go so that you can determine what you like. They had some unique varieties so I certainly needed some guidance! I brought home a bottle of Old Lions and I'm saving it for a special occasion! Add this to your next wine-crawl!"

Andrew K. "Impressive operation. It's a remarkable combination of investment, energy, and vision. The result is something special. They've created a space with attention, care, and many flashes of excellence. The pizza was the most surprising and most delicious part of the experience. The wines are Missouri wines, but they are exploring some interesting areas and doing more with dry wines (which is dearly needed).Pear dessert wine (port style) was impressive and vibrant. Constant focus on innovation, whether wine or beyond. Love to see it. If a breakthrough happens in Missouri wine, this is a likely spot for it. Prices are a notch higher than I'd like, but if it helps sustain the operation then all the better. And they definitely delivered a great experience. Looking forward to returning in a year or few."

Susan M. "This winery is a little off the beaten path, but I noticed a tiny roadside sign when I was visiting the famous Grinter Farm sunflower fields and General Store, and followed it to this charming place with delicious wines and a beautiful view over their pond surrounding countryside. For a party of 4 or fewer, a tasting of 5 wines was free, but their Seyval Blanc, a semi sweet white, was calling my credit card! All 5 I tasted were quite good. I especially liked being able to buy my bottle of chilled wine, have them open it and pour a glass so I could sit on the patio to enjoy it, then take it back in for them to use their Medieval-looking industrial strength wine bottle sealer on it so I could take the remainder home.Their tasting room is very comfortable and attractive, and the famous Kansas artwork that graces some of their bottle labels hangs on the walls, along with the history and story of the art."

KR H. "About nine months ago we were entertained here. Typical Missouri wines. Nice atmosphere. Food was catered in. It's been remodeled since then. We rented it to host an open house celebrating our anniversary. Compared to the many places we checked out... Very reasonably priced and very responsive to our requests. We had a photographer and the folks here suggested some locations to shoot pictures among the vines. We brought in cake and punch. Our guests mostly hadn't been here before and they all liked the setting. There are a couple of room options depending on your needs. They are friendly in the wine tasting. My son is not big on wine... But now that he's legal, they took the time with him while he took notes. He ended up buying a couple bottles. Feel free to drop in enjoy some wine, enjoy the views. We'll be back."

The grapes here are from Lodi, CA, which is my favorite soil in California. So, I was super pleased with most of the wines. The owner greeted us at the door as old friends, even though it was our first visit. We joined the wine club and are super excited our friends introduced us to Amigoni Urban Winery. Love that they are partnered with the KC Current too. We are so excited to go back. I bought half a case. Ha! We sat next to some super loud folks. Maybe next time we will sit outside. Erin W. "Located not far off 50 Hwy, Montserrat Vineyards is a hidden gem. This is the second time I've stopped in, but this time I actually got to look around. From the front, it looks small, but if you walk around the back there are places for bands to play and plenty of seats for people to come and enjoy music or even just take in the scenery of the grapes or the hills (they say it's the tallest spot in the county). The guy working the counter is fabulous and made us laugh the entire time. The wines...the only bad I can say is I wish they made more. There were 5 different types of wine, all wonderful. I had a really hard time trying to decide which ones (yes plural) to get. Even with just a few wines, they have a wide variety for everyone. I will most definitely be coming back...and a great stop on the way to the lake!"

There's a cool creepy funky vibe to the place and I'm not surprised to find out that in addition to wine tastings they also host murder mystery dinners and ghost tours- so neat! The building could use some cleaning and painting and general sprucing up, but the slightly distressed look does add to its charm a bit. It was busy the day that we were here- there were three separate private parties happening in various rooms. The bartender Madison in the tasting room could have gotten easily stressed out, but she took everything in stride and was just lovely- informative, helpful, and fun. The wine tastings are free! We tried 5 small pours & took a bottle of the delicious Sorelle Dolci home. We also both loved the dessert wine, called Boo's. We'll be back!"

Not too often you do a tasting at a winery and none of them are bad or vinegary. The fruit had tons of flavor in the semi sweet and thy drys were fruity as well. My fav was the elderberry and strawberry. I'm sure in the summer those made into slushies are incredible. The owner talked with us and passed on some neat facts about the land, berries etc. Gt winery, enjoyed the visit and wine. Get into this little wine gem."

We did the complimentary tasting of the month. The tasting area is small and intimate. Our party of three was the perfect size, but there are areas that accommodate larger groups. The wine slushy they sell was my favorite part and it's so delicious. You can get it in a to-go cup or jug, currently. My sister likes a more dry wine and she bought the remembrance. I like sweeter wines and went with the Blackhawk Blackberry. The POS went down while there so we had to pay with PayPal but the professional frustration showed was amazing. We loved the whole experience and I can't wait to bring my other sister back because WHO DOESNT LOVE WINE??? And the to-go slushy is life. I'm surprised they allow it for sale there. Now for the wine slushees. They came in blackberry and pina-colada. The ice slushees are in machines you can see and you get quite a glass for $8. It's in a beautiful, old building, of course. $5 for a tasting and you can literally taste EVERY wine they offer. Hint: It's a lot of wines! And that $5 tasting fee is waived if you buy enough bottles of wine from them. There are a couple of the more traditional red, white, and rose varieties. But the bulk of the wines here are fruit ones, and there is some mead too. And, spoiler alert, the fruity wines and mead are damn tasty. And be sure to leave room for some wine slushies. Unlike some wineries in Kansas you visit the grapes pretty much come right up to the facility which is a nice touch. And, are you sitting down wine snobs? Their wines are quite fine. I said it, good wine from Kansas grapes. Particularly the Nortons and Norton blends, possibly due to the fact the Norton is a grape native to the state. Cathryn G. "I stopped here en route from KC to Topeka. It was about 2pm on Sunday and the place was deserted. I sort of thought it was closed, but I went in and was greeted. I told the lady there I was there to sample some wines. She asked if I liked dry, sweet, or semi-sweet wine and I said semi- sweet. She directed me to a row of wine and said these are the semi-sweet ones. There must have been 8 or 9 semi sweet wines to choose from. If you include the dry and sweet they easily had 20+ wines. The great thing is that they allow you to taste 5 wines free of charge. I chose 5 semi sweet wines. The bummer was that the lady helping me didn't know anything about the wines. I asked about the grapes, the region, and all I got was an I don't know and I'm not sure. Most of the semi sweet wines were too sweet for me, which is really saying something because my friends tell me my wine is too sweet all the time. If these were the semi sweet, then how sweet were the sweet? Also, I was bummed that most of these were things like elderberry, blackberry, and cherry wine. I don't hate these things, but they sort of seem like fake wine to me. I ended up buying a bottle for my aunt that I thought she would like and I really felt like the woman working couldn't wait to get rid of me. I was bummed."

Located in Smithville, on acres of grapes and vineyards, Ladoga Ridge was the absolute perfect place for a wine double date. Family owned and operated since 2011, Ladoga offers a wide variety of dry, semi-sweet, sweet, reds, whites, and fruits to pair with local cheeses and meats. They offer tastings as well 5, for $5 to ensure you like what you are ordering. We took 2 bottles home, plus their mulling spices because I fell in LOVE with their mulled wine. On Friday and Saturday nights they have locals bands play outside, they light the fire pit, and turn on the hanging tree lights to create the perfect ambience for a winery evening. Ladoga is named after the dirt on the land, the owners have perfected the grape growing process then turning them into wine. I can only imagine the amount of time it takes, but the flavors are well worth it. Would 100% visit again."

One of them was called Happy Chef. Then we had the Apple, Puddle Jumper Pear, a white wine I don't remember the name, an Elderberry wine, and Tornado Spotter which is a Jalapeno/Apple wine.I bought the Pear and White wine for my parents. They are a little sweeter than I like. The Elderberry wine (which I love) I didn't like theirs it was dirty tasting. The Tornado Spotter is NASTY and a palate killer. The owner was super nice and they were having a farkel party while we were there.I would go again to get the Pear and White wine as gifts for people if I were in the area. Adam S. "Ehh, the shine has worn off this spot for us. We came up on a Monday because the kids were off school, and really just nothing quite hit. The staff seemed put off that we were there, which we really shouldn't be feeling when heading up for a festive fall day. Had to go back and ask for bags for our apples, and no guidance or anything. Usually we'll get a "head five rows down and you'll find loads of apples, etc." but nothing this time.We also reluctantly paid about $10 a person just to go in and pick apples (only to then pay again). Now let me be clear, it's OK to charge for people to use your land, your space, etc. and I'm not arguing that to a point. I'm just saying what we got doesn't make it worth it to us any longer. -There's a big bounce bubble that my girls kind of like. Only got about five minutes out of it this time around-No hayrides, no pumpkin cannons, nothing really on the day we visited -Some sort of farm-like roller track thing that we tried and it instantly came off the tracks and we "noped" out of it real quick -There was a carnival kind of game where you throw tennis balls at birds but all the tennis balls were missing-Strength tested hammer game was broken-Some fun baseball/football throwing target stations-A corn kernel pit that the kids did likeApples were good, but couldn't find a row with apples in reach for the kids so I ended up just going down a row solo and grabbing a few bags worth to take home. The whole thing just fell flat. Now to be fair, I have had fun here before, and it's likely more lively and in working order on the weekends. However, we took the girls to another Weston staple on the way out and they loved it, so that'll be our new spot in the future."
