"The first time I entered Cottin's, I did so with reluctance. I was concerned that as per usual, some older gent would look over my head to speak to my boyfriend about what he might be looking for today, making me feel invisible and like such a *girl.* Kind of like what happened to me when I used to go into certain chain electronics stores that have since gone out of business (yay!) in NYC.Not only did this not happen, I actually enjoyed my time in there the several times I've gone in. I kid you not! Now, I fully admit that I usually would only go into Cottin's because the K would be super enthusiastic about shopping in there and I can't say I share the same enthusiasm, but oh, OK, they have a lot of awesome garden stuff and hello, are those pink flamingoes?!?!There's a lot to love about Cottin's. They rent cotton candy (COTTIN Candy?!) and icee machines. They sell all kinds of tape. They sell a lot of different colored and sized novelty light bulbs. They sell old school Radio Flyer wagons. It feels like it could be 1950 in there, but with a 2010 sensibility. The staff, all young and friendly, rule the school. As Lydia A mentions below, they are part of what makes Cottin's such an enjoyable place to be.A "place to be"?! Yes! It's an experience! Even getting keys made is kinda fun (OK, well, that's an exaggeration. It is quick and painless, however!)OTOH, you'd have to drag me kicking and screaming into one of my most hated stores ever...HOME DEPOT. Blargh! Here's to the true mom & pop sensibility of Cottin's (check out their cute retro bumper stickers while you're there and slap one on your toolbox) with their fair prices, excellent customer service and the way they make you feel like anything is possible so I'm going to start building that garden shed I've always wanted...I JEST."
"Good to have a farm store around, even if item are a little extra, good for odd ball items too"
"I bought all the fixtures for my new contemporary home from Premier. I have strangers stop to ask where I got my exterior lights. The whole house looks great and Ryan helped us make every selection and delivered service above and beyond, fixing problems that weren't even his responsibility. This is a company that was an absolute pleasure to do business with and Ryan was exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful."
"The mack daddy of hardware stores! Strasser is a venerable institution. Dependable, always there for you, never without a sense of humor and full of answers to your every question. Yep. Strasser is like your dad (but only if your dad is old school and awesome). Things I've bought at Strasser:-clothing racks (ah, living in old houses is charming, but people obviously were not clothes horses back in the day)-a gorgeous vintagy patinaed watering can -tomato cages-painting supplies (so much cheaper than getting them at Sherwin Williams and they have a good variety of quality brushes, sponges and more. They have paint, too, but if you're into a huge variety of textures and shades, you're better off at a dedicated paint store obviously). -a door mat-extension cords-electrical equipment-duct tapeWhoa, I'm starting to sound like a serial killer now...Holy crap, and there's free popcorn, too! So, you go to the hardware store and get a treat out of it, just like the old days. Yep. Strasser knows what they're doing.Dad also only hires the nicest people. There's the friendly guys and girls who roam the aisles asking if you need help (no, seriously! And unlike at HD, they have the bloody answers!) and then there's personable cashiers who make check-out both fun and a breeze. You'd be a fool if you don't make it your one-stop over the hellhole that is Home Depot. You know your dad would agree because he probably hates Home Depot, too."
"Taylor in lumbar was very helpful. While there were 5 other employees in the lumber area, 3 were helping/watching one customer while one of the 2 checkout clerks went to get Taylor. I understand teamwork, but question why it took 1 employee and 2 watching employees to help one customer. No body acknowledged us at the cashiers, who were in conversation with each other, nor the 3 helping 1 customer. Thank you Taylor for actually helping customers. The 5 stars are for Taylor. For Lowes as a whole I'd give 1 star."
"I've been to this location a few times and I've always been very happy with my experience. The staff is always extremely friendly and the selection of products is really good."
"This place is fantastic! They always have what I'm looking for at a reasonable price."
"Great place for bulk Dry Ice in Kansas City, Mo and dry ice blasting rental and dry ice delivery."

This may be my favorite business in the entire city of Lawrence. It all boils down to really outstanding service. I can walk in that big chain hardware store in town (has three letters) and can't track someone down to save my life--which is why I stopped going there years ago. At Cottin's, you walk in the door and they'll ask you if you need help finding something. I usually do, so I'm grateful for the attention. They're very helpful and really know their business.Need something? This isn't a huge store, but they're happy to order it for you, and then they'll call you as soon as it's in. I'll do that for everything vs. going to *that chain which shall remain unnamed.* Since it's a family run business, they treat their customers like their neighbors (like good neighbors, make that). This is as good as a locally run business gets. They have and will continue to get all of my business. Now if we could just find someone in this town that could run a restaurant this well...

We have always had great luck shopping here. We always get in and out quickly and our dog loves the bones they sell here!

There's something about going to a classic hardware store like Strasser. If you're making frequent hardware store trips, it often means you're knee deep in the best times of year in KC, either spring or early fall. They've got that earthy smell, you can bring dogs in, you're about to start a project that you're hopefully excited about and more excited to knock out and have a beer on the porch afterward. Strasser is a KC staple with the big, bold letters printed on the side of the building that anchors a western stretch of SW Boulevard. This is a hardware store with a history, and better than that, it's still a go-to in the age of suburban box stores. This hardware store has pretty much everything you need.I'll admit the last two times in I haven't encountered the friendliest service, but nothing overtly rude, just maybe a bit more aloof than my smaller neighborhood hardware store. Local, helpful, easy in and out, no-brainer over some other places in town.

It's probably true that those who have bad service write comments more than people who have good experiences. When my mom's refrigerator was delivered last December, the delivery guys went above and beyond. However, the purchasing was an issue. Delivery was set. However on the morning of the delivery I received an email that it wouldn't be delivered until the next week. My 95 year old mom wasn't settling for that. I called and after MUCH discussion, they located a similar model and met the price of the first one. It was delivered it that afternoon. Lowe's has always been "the place" to purchase appliances. Good prices and good delivery. So when my refrigerator went out in March, we purchased one there. Delivery was set. Uh oh. Since my mom's delivery, they have switched how they deliver. Instead of Lowe's employees delivering, they hired a delivery service...I think it might be the same company they use across the country. Two guys showed up. The "second" had no idea what he was doing and had injured his foot earlier in the day when an appliance fell on it and then again hit it on my refrigerator. I felt badly for him, as I realized these delivery guys just weren't trained for the job they were doing. The "lead" would have made a good "second" as he had some idea what he was doing but still hadn't had enough training either. Bringing in the fridge, which admittedly was just barely small enough to go through the door, they banged up my doorpost after not waiting when I told them to wait til I got my partner to help. I had a small piece of carpet that could have gone where they scraped the door. They hooked it up to the water line and were patient when my partner had a bit of difficulty getting the water turned off. From there everything went downhill. They fumbled around and finally got the handles on the bottom freezer. They used only one screw for one door and broke off a screw in the other handle so it couldn't be used. They removed no packing or tape other than what they had to open the doors. The lead didn't know how to put in the water filter and refused my friend's help. Finally got it in. Then they left. First he asked me to sign a paper saying delivery was complete which I refused. I had glanced at the paper earlier and it mentioned they would be removing the packing, etc., which the delivery company later said they don't do. ??????My friend took the handle to the store and showed them the issue. They took the handle off the floor model and gave him a second screw for the other handle. We removed all the tape and packing which takes a while and he fixed the door handles. I've talked to the store manager several times about repair and deducting some from what we paid for all the extra aggravation. Today is April 8. The fridge was delivered March 24. After 3 calls to the 800 number with promises of being contacted by a manger over the store manager (which as it turns out was a lie), eventually they filled out a report and sent it to the third party company that now handles complaints with the delivery company and I THINK and HOPE the store. The French doors need leveling which we have complained about since the 24th when the delivery guys didn't do it. The store manager was to have someone from the store call to set up a time 3 days ago for possibly the next day. Didn't happen. Called again today and said to get someone here today or come get the refrigerator and I'll buy one somewhere else. (Interestingly, she wasn't concerned at all that I might have them do that. Customer service? They need to improve.) Supposedly someone will be here today. Sometime I'll hear back from the delivery company regarding paying for the door repair. The store manager isn't wanting to deduct anything from the price and says the delivery company would have to do that. If they don't deduct something, they'll be getting this one back. Let them lose money on the deal. Will I again purchase an appliance from Lowe's? Doubtful unless they get their act together. Whoever made the decision to have a delivery company deliver rather than their employees goofed. If they had a company that was trained to do the job that would be different. The store manager informed me they were on their third crew. Good luck.

Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. Tools are decent quality and generally lower priced than that of other locations. Even when Harbor Freight is super busy and all the cashier's are full with a line, you can still find an employee in the store who is willing to assist you.

I don't recommend this place because they didn't have much inventory, the brands were cheap unless you wanted to pay a ridiculous price and the staff was not very knowledgeable or helpful.

"Speaking with a Canadian at a music conference this past May; I asked him what was the highlight of his first visit to Kansas City. His immediate and enthusiastic response was "I finally got to visit Harry J Epstein!". I was not familiar with the business even though I had lived in the Garment District. He explained that as a woodworking craftsman he bought a lot of his high-end tools on-line and had them shipped to Canada from KC because of the top of the line and rare items that HJE carried. He also told me that they will create a wonderful hand drawn piece of art on the order if you request "box art". He urged me to visit and this week I popped in before heading to work. I'm not a craftsman or even a slight handyman, but my visit was amazing. The quantity and variety is mesmerizing and I only visited the ground floor and basement, the top floors I saved for a return visit. I now just have to determine what my carpenter buddy needs as a Christmas present before returning. The journey into the basement was quite memorable, it felt as if wandering down into 19th century Kansas City's underbelly. I feel quite out of touch that it took a foreigner to get me up to speed with a 90 year old Kansas City retail icon. I so glad that such an old business has kept itself relevant and grown it's sales and reputation internationally in the digital age. May Harry J. Epstein Co prosper into the next century."
"Harbor freight is generally easier to find stuff than when inside a big box store. It's a lot cheaper, too. If you need an occasional use power tool, you can buy it cheaper here than you can likely rent it."
"Just an update. After explaining our situation, in a Tweet on the Twitter, I was approached by Lowe's Cares. I suspect it's a little like Comcast Cares. I was directed to a rant and rave page, where I typed in my Yelp review. Within an hour, we got a call from the store manager. He set up the date (yesterday) and assured us we'd get the right refrigerator. He took 10% off. They were to call, give us a 2 hour window as we have doggies that need to be persuaded into a room with the door closed. They were supposed to photograph the woodwork damage and take pictures, sand it and fix it.They called yesterday at 12:15. They showed up at around 3ish. We had already put the food back into the coolers again. They told us the refrigerator we received was a test refrigerator, never meant to be sold in the first place to anyone. They rolled their eyes at the woodwork damage, and finally got the test refrigerator out of the house. They installed the new refrigerator, glanced at the woodwork scratch with an eyeroll and left.By now, I'm tired of Lowes and Sears and refrigerators and inadequacy. As a customer, I've been finished with Sears for awhile. As a customer of Lowe's, it'll be a long time before I go into Independence Lowes. But I really need to ask them why they didn't sand and fix the scratch like the manager insisted they would be doing."
"This place is amazing! In a world full of Lowes, Home Depot and chain type construction stores that offer little experienced people this place is a gem! You have knobs you can't find anywhere, make the trip to Locks and Pulls. If they can't help you, they can give you the name of someone ( handyman) who can. Seriously, just skip lowes and Home Depot for any type of knob or decorative items and come here. Their selection is huge, the staff is friendly and the prices are really fair. I hope they never close."
"I love Feldman's clothes. It makes me feel like I'm in Nashville on the strip. Really it's a fun store. The clothes are actually top of the line. The staff are kind and helpful. Plus, I use this store to bring my 3.5 lb puppy on a 6 foot leash, into for socialization skills (always buy something too). It makes the staff smile."
"Friendly staff, prices are reasonable to avoild driving to the city, and its pretty organized there too, cannot complain"
"Great selection of everything you need for small to big projects! Small town, no worries! They got ya covered! Everything from toilet brushes to outdoor furniture! Check them out! I left today with a patio propane heater! Can't wait to light it up!"
"Fleetwood is considered the top gun for everything mower related in this city. I've probably purchased my last 3-4 here over the years. Sure, there are a few other places you can take one for repair or maintenance, but when it's serious and requires expertise you hear the same refrain, "take it to Fleetwood."Yes, they can be brutally slow in getting around to reconditioning mowers, but imagine the entire city dumping them off late year once the lawns no longer need mowing. Going from few to hundreds of them at once. I get it. Still, I find they will work with you in certain situations and try to meet your needs. For that reason I think they're a solid 4 star kind of place. In a town loaded with places to buy a mower, when the kid that was mowing my lawn drove it into a 4 inch metal pipe a few days ago and badly bent the crankshaft, I took it in and they were willing to do a quick look, confirmed (and showed me what was wrong) and out the door I went with a replacement. Cha-ching. So much for his cheap rate :(.This place, highly recommended. Yea, not always warm and fuzzy customer service, but they get the job done and they do it right. I'll be back."
"This place is simply amazing. If the spice or seed exists, Planters will have it. Even better, the sales team knows what they're talking about and can provide all kinds of planting advice. If you're looking for a specific type of tomato or pepper, they'll have it. If you think the spice rack T your food market is impressive, you ain't seen nothing yet. Now, after the shock $ awe of the seed depot, go visit the other sections. Neat yard art, wind chimes, planters and every kind of garden fertilizer, fungicide, bug killer you can imagine. Then move on to the hardware section, with all kings of parts for drip systems and sprinkler systems. I could spend two hours just browsing. If you've got a green thumb, or need help becoming one, this is your Nirvana."
"I guess contractors and DIYers are not Yelpers?! How this place has not been reviewed is beyond me. Custom milling. Exotic woods. Good service. I could drop some serious jack in here and just saw my life away. And it smells good here. : )"
"Store is well maintained. I come here for some easy supplies; purchased a set of child's boots here, cheaper than elsewhere, sturdy quality. One of the things to like about Feldman's is that it is easy to find what you are looking for and the organization is well in order. The staff is helpful, and the things I've needed. have been here. I've also used Feldman's for horse feed and purchased chicken feeders here. Still have both in good shape. I'd recommend shopping at Feldman's, even if you are just comparing."
"My wife and I stopped at this Lowe's location to pick up several things that we needed for home in the area, which we had just purchased. We found some carpet that we liked and noticed that they also had a very good pad to go under it.We talked with Wes in the flooring department and he was amazing even though it was only a few minutes before their closing time.We got all of the help that we needed and another person came out to our house to measure where the carpet went, so we can figure out how much we need and pay for the installation.I went back a next day to buy some more stuff to treat the floor and also some paint brushes, rollers, and all the equipment that I needed. I also got a lock box for the house.I like Lowe's because they are very helpful and the people that work there seem to actually want to help you as opposed to other places. We will go back here to find all of the things we need for our home."
