Chris G. "What a great store, and very nice people. We were repeatedly (but not annoyingly so) offered assistance, and our items taken to wait for us at the counter near the front of the store. Prices are pretty good, and I thought much cheaper than River Market Antique Mall in KC, for the same exact items. It's pretty easy to get around in the store, and the stairs aren't super steep like in some warehouse markets. The other two reviews describe the store very well, so make sure to read them. :) The customer service was just wonderful, and we found some really neat and awesome things, for much less than we'd expected!A nice man driving down the street even offered to let us cross in front of his vehicle in front of the store.......of course, he said it was so he could run us over, but we managed to survive. ;)"

Samantha M. "Winfield House in an unobtrusive, conservative furniture and interior accessories store. Whereas I'd shop at Blue Heron, Winfield House is my mother's generation kind of place. Everything inside is tastefully staged and aromatically alluring. I spent at least five minutes alone on candle smelling! Since it's that time of year, Winfield House was also full of harvest motif home decorations. Who finds time to put this stuff out, keep the cats from dragging stuff off the tables and then put it away again in a color coded holiday decorations bin? Not me. But if you have time on your hands and money to burn, you too can give your entire home a fall makeover courtesy of Winfield House."

While this store predominately brings in hundreds and hundreds of middle age women who dress well and have money to burn, my wife and I love visiting this store for inspiration. I love making furniture with wood, and my wife loves everything about this store. Together we can spend hours walking around with wide eyes looking at everything this gigantic store has to offer. I can't wait to make a dining room table similar to the one I saw here. My wife likes this place because it feels a lot like Nell Hills, but doesn't have the exorbitant price tag. Very similar items that you find here are significantly less expensive than Nell Hills. However, they are still probably more expensive than you like. If you are looking for a great place to go for home furnishings, interior decorating, seasonal decorations (especially Christmas), this is your store!"

Jess J. "This store is an odd one...on one hand, it's part grubby, patchouli-and-cloves drenched hipster hangout, full of things like snarky greeting cards and subversive fridge magnets made of recycled license plates from import cars whose makes don't exist anymore. On the other hand, it's a peddler of upscale futons (is that possible?) that are custom-made and custom upholstered, the likes of which the grubby hipsters would never be able to afford without selling at least half their bongs. I appear to have awakened one morning to find that I had entered the stage of life where I no longer feel that my dwelling is empty without a futon, so when I go in here, it's usually just to look at the novelty knick knacks...wind-up nuns, libertarian quote books, obscene greeting cards, voo-doo dolls, soapstone incense burners, and whatnot. There's usually something fun to purchase."

Colleen O. "There are millions of furniture stores and billions of furniture inside of them - and it's enough to paralyze a girl from decorating her own damn room with so many options her head explodes! So let me make it simple. Traditions Furniture is a great stop of you like the following:1. WOOD. Hearty woods, dark and rustic and moody. I knew a few families growing up that decorated around wood and their homes smelled like this store, with a little hint of bacon - strange but I promise it's dead-on. TF doesn't offer any light woods, nothing to brighten a room - it all looks amazing in candle light, VERY cozy and warm surroundings.2. Nothing modern. Nothing. It's not too feminine with the abundance of leather goods and rigidly shaped lamps. There is no silver, chrome, simple, mod anything. 3. Cheap art reproductions. The paintings were large and well-framed (possibly by the many framing shops around the Santa Fe neighborhood - there is an ungodly amount of them). But among the monolithic pieces, nothing I saw was over $400, and most of it was between $100 and $200. And these are statement wall-hangings here - so their prices are surprisingly affordable if you are looking to accessorize the home. 4. Lamps. Also affordable, and plenty to chose from, was their collection of table lamps, most of which were low-lighting and tasteful, classic pieces. I found a few African-inspired and Victorian style lamps I thought were interesting and for only $25 to $50! AND they offer a coupon at the door that cuts the price of one home accessory item by 25% until after December 1st - so jump on it.5. Traditional Christmas decorations. They had huge wall hangings with phrases like, "Hearts come home for Christmas" and "Your husband just called and he said you could by anything," (how dark ages is that last quote?!) They also had tons of those collectible Santa dolls some women like so much around this time. You know - I would love this place more if it were a little more Comfort Sofa and a little less "this is the men's smoking room.""

The ultra- soft carpeting in the dressing room makes trying on clothes comfortable and fun. Very organized with perfect prices. Not only are the prices cheap ($5-8 for shirts, $9-11 for jeans, $15-19 for dresses) but they are always have 20% off sales on their merchandise. It's not necessarily ALL brand named like Plato's Closet, but while Plato's closet screams "I'm a young pre-teen who loves nothing but Hollister and skinny jeans", Mary Margaret's gives the impression of "I'm a nice lady who loves a staple jewelry piece and a classy high heel.""

Two weeks ago, I found a coffee table and end table that would fit my new living room remodel, and I was pleased with the condition and price. I ended up purchasing the floor model since they were discontinued. During the purchase, I asked the saleslady to hold my items for a week and wrap them in plastic for me so that when I returned for pick-up, I wouldn't have to worry about scratching them. The lady didn't seem very involved in her aim to be appeasing and thought that her response, "Sure" was just off-putting. Upon my return, the items were not wrapped. I wasn't surprised; however, the four people who brought the items out for me to put into my car quickly wrapped the furniture in plastic."

Meghan M. "We were in the mattress market and heard great things about this place on mattressunderground.com. So we drove halfway to Arkansas ---errr well, not quite, but it's pretty far south--- to shop around at this local establishment. For mattresses, they are one of the few places in this area that carry non-big name mattresses. I think they only carry 3 brands, so that is a bit limited, but if you're looking for something different then this is your place. They have memory foam mattresses from anatomic global and latex from latex bliss. The staff was incredibly patient and informative. They provided lots of information, gave us the space and time to mull things over, and didn't pressure us too much. I did price comparisons between internet prices and their prices on exact models, and Orman's was consistently cheaper. So if you are looking for those brands or looking to try those brands then this is a good place to go. Furniture-wise, they seemed to have a pretty stocked warehouse with higher quality wares than Nebraska Furniture Mart. I think they try to keep their pricing competitive, but unfortunately, part of that equates to only being open 3 days a week (Thursday-Saturday)."

But I have still found some really neat vintage things here.I also absolutely love the format and layout and environment of the store atmosphere! Of all the antique malls in town this is the most feeling I have; like I'm in a Christmas movie when I go!The checkout counter is really a neat design. The vendors do a nice layout of each booth. It's also fairly new.But they do not have near the selection of vintage items of other stores in town. But I did find a really neat small Christmas tree here that was priced much lower than any of the other stores in town. I'm giving it four stars instead of five stars because it has fewer items, but it is also a relatively new store. The way the management is done and they're awesome dogs -- they can easily move this up to a five star rating with increased selection from new vendors. If you're in the area it's definitely worth visiting."

Colleen O. "My friend and I call this place old lady-chic. They're bedding often has exaggerated floral patterns that go beyond dated into this sort of fashionable realm...we both really like it and can recognize its odd appeal from spending too much time at our grandmother's houses, I'm sure. I like walking through the Plaza location, it's airy and interesting (although if you aren't a 50 year-old yuppie, don't hold your breath to be greeted at the door.) The prices go above and beyond what I'll be able to afford in bedding for the next 20 years, but a girl can dream can't she?I fell in love with this dreamy classic, romantic-looking cradle with a golden silk canopy draped around the four posts - for a regal baby with wealthy parents. The price tag is like $2,000, but it would look magnificent in a well-planned nursery, a mother's dream crib. Last time I was inside, I was all too coolly ignored...so bad in fact, I wondered why they spent so much effort ignoring some people and not others! And when I walked to the back of the store, I guess I caught their eye because one woman was sent to "check" on me...basically, to see if I was stealing. Oh yes! What I would have loved to take from the towel department (sarcasm)! Beyond this, Scandia Down is a place to escape in. It has beautifully detailed home pieces and a woman who enjoys decorating with an either exotic or old-fashioned flair (they somehow cover both tastes quite well) - would be happy to look around one day while window shopping on the Plaza."

Either way, this home decor in Independence Square is seriously a hidden gem. What I am most impressed with is that I can easily see women and men (or at least men with an eye for design) being impressed by this store. While some of the stuff is a little too frilly for my taste, every time I turned my head I was drawn in to look at something else. In my head, I redecorated my entire apartment, and it looked pimp. Some of the particulars that I really liked:- high quality reproductions of WWI era (I think?) wool army blankets.- Edison bulbs, everywhere!- Great vintage desks and tables made of reclaimed woodOne minor downfall is that the store seemed somewhat expensive to me, though I guess you get what you pay for.Not often do I say "I HAVE to get back to Independence," but damn... Joi B. "Snap, baby, snap- Retro Inferno! This store embodies the word, "sharp." I know not much about furniture "except what I like" and "what I like" generally that falls into the Art Deco/Victorian with a splash of vintage Chinese (a "splash" because I can't afford more than an accent piece or two) category. My perfect room looks like it would have been in an EJ Bellocq photograph (sans prostitutes), just to give you an idea.Of course this is the antithesis of what you'd find in Retro Inferno, but I can still admire... and appreciate. Sometimes, I enter a home that is the perfect Mid-Century Modern time capsule and for minutes, perhaps hours, I consider putting out all my furniture at the curb. If I were to ever follow through, I suppose I cold then hit up Retro Inferno and re-outfit my digs.Although the price tags here give me pause (keep in mind these are designer pieces in PRISTINE condition, so it's to be expected and this is not at all a complaint) I was incredibly impressed by the composition of things (on the main floor, which is the showroom. Upstairs there's plenty more to look at and downstairs seems to be the area that is less artfully placed and more affordable). The people who run this place are design phenoms, I tell you. Speaking of disco (sorry, this store really has nothing at all to do with disco), I kept looking around thinking that when Mr. and Mrs. Roper from Three's Company were newlyweds in their younger days, their house would have looked just like many of the "sets" in Retro Inferno. That is, I presume they had slightly loud. slightly swanky, yet outrageous taste back in their day, only by the time they were on Threes Company, the bamboo inlay dining room table with glass top got put to the curb for a wicker dining room set. It's just the natural progression of things when you are in your late 50s and down to make whoopee, you know?"
