My first encounter here, and I was very pleased with the experience. The staff (hosts/hostess, servers and chefs) are all high school students training to be chefs. I has the feel of a fine dining experience. The menu is somewhat set as you choose 1 item each from 3 categories. Every plate was presented elegantly with very close attention to detail.....like what you would see on one of those cooking/chef TV competition shows. The 3 items I chose were the Jerk Lamb chops, Lobster and Crab Gnocchi and the Black Forrest Pot De Creme for desert. The quantities were not huge, but the taste/quality of each item was wonderful. It felt well worth the $40 cost. It is seasonal and runs only during the school year, and are only open on a very limited bases during the week. We had to get reservations a couple of months in advance. I would definitely go back.

If you want to experience a chef made 3 course dining experience at a great price this is your stop! You will have to make reservations or plans early for this experience. For the price of around $40 you get to pick 3 courses, appetizer, entree and dessert plus bread. It was a difficult decision to make but I went with Shrimp & Chorizo empanada, Panang curry short ribs with jasmine rice and naan, and the warm cornmeal financier. My favorite course was dessert with the buttered popcorn ice cream(better than the name) on a honey cheesecake, cranberry and ......caramel popcorn! Such a complex savory experience! I will make coming here be an annual experience. I am inspired that HS students/chef made all this and worked the entire front aspect of the house. The only drawbacks were its acoustic makes it for a very loud atmosphere and our server need more feedback on to refill our beverages and provide more of a dining experience with details and descriptions.

This might be a cooking school, but their food is quite professional. For $40, you get three courses, and additional bites before and after the courses (e.g. a small saucer of soup, cookie, etc). You can mix and match your courses, as they offer a variety of options per course. I haven't had a bad meal here - depending on what is ordered, the single course can either be filling or not, but it will be distinctly flavorful. The restaurant's ambiance is more upscale than expected, as it is inside of a school district campus. They are only open on Wednesdays throughout the school year, as the restaurant is largely manned by students (and a few instructors / teachers that navigate around). If you are coming to dine, don't forget to bring cash for a tip, as you can't add it to the bill. If there is availability and time, your (student) server will offer a tour of the restaurant and kitchen - take it! It's pretty interesting and insightful.

The first visit was not 5 stars. The fancy Italian soda wasn't sweet at all and the menu items were very small portioned.I returned to a completely different situation. The food is served by students of the culinary school in Shawnee Mission Highschool. Just for the experience alone as long as you like the menu is worth it.This visit included a calzone and for dessert as strawberry crepe. The main dish was chicken breast with a sweet sauce. We received a tour and was introduced to the instructor. These students are impressive to say the least. The menu changes a few times a year. They also have a bakery and guest chefs. It's $35. But a good experience.

This is a review strictly on the bistro morning service.I just want to plaster the city with advertisements on this place. What a huge plus for our school district and community. The building and the eating space is gorgeous and inviting. You do have to be let in the building and check in with the guard but after all it is a school. In the mornings they have a variety of sweets and pastries, I don't get the impression they have a regular menu for breakfast. In fact we asked about lunch items and the sweet girl working said it varies and to just call if we want to know ahead of time. My husband got lucky and they had a chicken salad sandwich left from the previous days lunch I imagine. He is not a pastry fan. The bread was fresh baked and the chicken salad was simple with a light base and just celery and onion. Sandwich was solid, not soggy in the least. My daughter chose a peanut butter cookie and oh my, it was moist peanut buttery goodness. It was thick and chewy. I had a homemade everything bagel. It was chewy and probably the second best bagel I have ever had in KC. My only complaint is it is reheated in a microwave and it made an already chewy bagel and little chewier. I would recommend a toaster oven for reheating items. They have an espresso machine so you can order your speciality drink or just get a drip coffee. Drip coffee is piping hot and pretty good. Husband ordered the iced coffee thinking it would be coffee on ice but it was with milk. Didn't matter, it was so good he bought another one. The espresso is again probably one of the best I have had. We had a wonderful morning just sitting and watching as students arrived and prepped for lunch. What greater way to engage kids than to get them started on their career passion now. I encourage anyone reading this to support this program by going in the mornings to grab a bite, stopping on the afternoons they offer baked goods for sale and their weekly dinners. These kids are talented. They also have a huge shelf full of a variety of jams and pickles that are made in house from their garden. Huge jars of pickles are $5, yes $5! I bought two. And the cherry on top... iced coffee, drip coffee, cookie, bagel with cream cheese , a chicken salad sandwich and a jar of sweet pickles for a total of $15! Seriously! Side note, I bought the second jar when I realized what a steal and decided it is my job to help support this program.

Wow‼ A culinary school staffed and run by students.. open for coffee, pastries and quiches, soups and salads Mon- Friday and hand made pizza on Fridays! On Wednesday evenings they serve a 4 course gourmet dinner with the opportunity to tour the most amazing state of the art kitchen we have ever seen. The waiters, cooks, hostesses and dishwashers are students - each taking turns weekly to learn skills. It's a great night out. The dinner selections were creative and delicious and the plating was gorgeous! The school has a huge vegetable, flower and herb garden so everything is fresh and seasonal! Plan time to stay and take a tour of the kitchen!

Things you probably never think: "I'm going to go get a top-notch meal at my local elementary school." Despite the fact that this Bistro is located inside an elementary school, it's about as far as you can get from a "school lunch." This bistro is open to everyone with a reservation on Wednesday nights, currently at $30 per person. You won't find cardboard-like rectangles of pizza, the potato flake mashed potatoes and the cartons of chocolate milk here. Instead you're more likely to eat locally grown produce from their urban farm, squash bisque, rabbit confit, flatbreads and hand cut pasta, and desserts as part of the Prix-fixe menu. You'll also find the Bistro students selling bread, salsas, jams, etc. at the nearby OP Farmers' Market in season. Most of the food I've had here is very good, well flavored and like something out of a great restaurant. Keep in mind they are students so sometimes things are better than others, but it's all part of them learning and finding their passion in cooking. Some well known chefs have come through this culinary program and it's pretty cool that high school kids are able to see if this is their passion or not.Take a chance, make a res and check them out!

Amazing dinner last night at the Bistro. SMSD students taking it to the next level - meal presentation and service. I have no pic of the entree because I dug in too fast!

Who knew that a fine dining restaurant could be found inside a high school in Overland Park? I dined with several family members at The Broadmoor Bistro recently and had an amazing meal. Students prepare all of the food and provide table service. Each dish was prepared and plated with skill. The baked goods were fresh and delightful. I will definitely be dining there with friends and families again.

Love eating here! Always so impressed by the students! The food and service were excellent. Large portions - we were stuffed! Beautiful space. We were seated close to the kitchen where all the food was being prepared and coming out to the diners. So much fun to watch them in action!Be sure to grab some quiche, English muffins, and pastries on your way home.
