A hippie crunchies dream. Fair trade, antiques, small makers and artisans. While they usually focus on jewelry there are also purses, clothes, candles, crystals, trinkets, socks and all kinds of amazing gift ideas! This store has been around for over 20 years bringing a hippie BoHo magic style to the old downtown beautiful Lees Summit. Welcome knowledgeable staff is the cherry on top. Prices range from cheap to fancy.

So, I'm a little bit artsy fartsy and bohemian in my tastes, but trying to shop that way in a suburban locale sometimes dead-ends one at Pier 1/World Market, or at community craft fairs that are heavy on the Longaberger baskets, plastic canvas and yarn creations, and dreamcatchers. Which is fine, unless you want something that's really fairly unusual. This is where Blue Heron Designs comes in. Big fan of this shop...unusual jewelry, accessories, and gifts, an artsy vibe...walks the fine line of being charmingly crunchy-granola-yay-fair-trade-folk-art-and-cutesy-recycled-materials-crafts without embracing a full-on, unwashed-proprietors-and-grimy-patchouli-reeking-headshop-in-a-college-town vibe. Very unique merchandise from all over the world, classy but not obnoxiously overpriced, and the service is very nice and helpful. Got my mom a sterling silver pendant with a real iridescent butterfly wing encased in glass (made by indigenous Peruvian butterfly farmers, natch), and presented it to her for Christmas. The woman wept, and I know she doesn't have anything like this already kicking around her jewelry box. They also, in warmer months, always keep a bowl of clean water out front for pooches, which I love...both as a frequent dogwalker in the vicinity, and also because such touches are just good stewardship in a community that prides itself on having a walkable downtown. Props to Blue Heron...charming shop!

Where are stars 6-10? Laurie was working when I stopped in. We visited about my just moving to Lees Summit and she volunteered useful information on activities I may enjoy to meet other ladies. She is my virtual 411! The store is charming on its own, but Laurie brings a class all her own to the customers. She's a real asset.

I'm glad a place like this exists in Lee's Summit. The staff is super chill. I love the Blue Q stuff the most; I got a bag from here years ago that strangers always ask me about. There is a lot of merchandise that directly supports artists and a variety of things that would make fun, unique gifts. My only complaint is that I wish it was more affordable. It's nice to window shop at least. Check out the socks!

The Blue Heron is a great little place with unique jewelry and other items. I just mentioned that the stone fell out of this ring that I've worn for years and they offered to fix it. I didn't know they did that! My favorite shop in downtown Lees Summit!

This shop is very unique, business-equality driven, (They import goods at fair prices, so some jewel miner in X country can actually afford a living). The best thing about Blue Heron is the fact that there are choices. Gemstones, arrangement, color, size, etc, all can be made to order. I ordered a custom bracelet as a gift for my mother, and despite the fact that it had over 5 types of precious stones and gems, including freshwater pearls, it only cost $63.When I was picking up my order, the attendants were enthusiastic and genuinely enjoyed their work, which means a lot. This company is a fusion of creativity, ethical trade, and the wonderment of knick-knacks.I mentioned to the employees how their products are so much better than the blandness of Helzbergs, or any other run of the mill Gem A + Metal B = $500 jewelry shop. Helzbergs is boring at its core, and with Blue Heron, you don't have to settle for boring everything is original and much more outspoken.
