Some friends and I got together last weekend at American Slang for a reunion. We had a wonderful lunch made even better by the warm and personalized service offered by our server, Jen. Thank you for a terrific afternoon!

My fiancé and I came here for Sunday brunch and weren't too impressed. Service was great and friendly, and the view of the plaza was lovely. The music was good also. However, the food was average. I ordered the quiche with a side salad. The quiche was very thin and did not contain much egg. I don't think I would have known it was quiche if it hadn't been listed as such. The arugula salad looked amazing but it was coated in salt. I couldn't even eat it, because it was so salty and not good. Putting salt on a salad defeats its nutritiousness. My fiancé ordered the eggs Florentine which was much better. We also ordered a side of wheat toast which was good.

This review is for the afternoon tea. I went with a group of ladies for a birthday at 1pm on a Thursday. The restaurant was pretty quiet, only a few patrons. The set up is lovely, light and airy, and our service was wonderful. We found the trays of sweets, scones, and tea sandwiches to be good! The scones and pumpkin/banana bread were our favorite, the petit fours and various other desserts were beautiful and delicious. The sandwiches left something to be desired, but we were there for the experience, so we overlooked that. Tea service was fine. Like another person mentioned, I was surprised that they served Tazo tea...I expected something fancier. We chose the option that came with a glass of brut, so for $37pp, you're definitely going for the experience. BUT we had a LOT of treats leftover, so they get props for portions!

This beautiful restaurant, located in the Intercontinental Hotel across the Plaza is often overlooked. The interior transports you to a Parisian setting, and their service is impeccable. They were accommodating to a larger party of guests and even gave my friends and me a separate room. We came here to try their Restaurant Week Lunch Menu which was good but nothing extremely noteworthy. I enjoyed the salad as it contained beets but both the salad and main dish of chicken were pretty standard. The chicken with mashed potatoes reminded me of a Thanksgiving meal and did not have any outstanding flavors. The carrot cake was yummy but again nothing too special. While I enjoyed the atmosphere and the spectacular view of the Plaza, the subpar food would keep me from returning.

Don't waste your money here! We picked it because it was convenient (being in our hotel) and the menu online seemed good. The menu they are actually serving right now is nowhere near as good. The best part was the charcuterie plate (which is pretty hard to mess up meat and cheese). The steak was very underwhelming and needed salt, Texas Roadhouse is way better and half the price. The burger was awful, bland and the melted cheese on top was cold and hard. Our waitress was more interested in over-serving the drunk guy at the table next to us who was flirting with her (guess she thought he'd tip more?). I'm not sure how he got so drunk, our drinks were weak despite premium prices. We stopped back in for breakfast (our mistake). The pancakes were ok, the Benedict was underwhelming and small. The coffee was biter and I had to use a ton of cream and sugar to make it drinkable.

Review is for the Afternoon Tea service. For $28/person for the traditional service - I expected better quality. Their tea is just a tea bag from Tazo, a very subpar tea brand if you're into tea. But if you're not, it's not a big deal. The sandwiches were very plain as well and you can taste the bread not being fresh. What makes up for it is the decor of the restaurant and the view. It's a worthwhile experience and a good introductory to the world of afternoon tea, but not exceptional.

Joe, the bar manager makes an incredible Old Fashioned, perhaps the best I've had in the city. The rest of the bar staff is amazing as well. Can't wait to be back there at Christmas.

Just on a whim, Hubby and I drove to KC from St. Louis for a 2 night getaway and stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel, which houses American Slang. After reading the prior reviews, we were not planning to visit this particular restaurant. The Intercontinental upgraded us to the Concierge floor where breakfast is served for free, but one morning we were told to hit the front desk up for free breakfast coupons to American Slang, so we obliged. VERY glad this happened! It was around 9:30am and the restaurant was not busy. We were appropriately greeted and promptly seated by a window overlooking the corner courtyard and (with a big smile) provided an insulated carafe of surprisingly delicious coffee. Our friendly server filled our mugs and gave us time to make our selections. We ordered the eggs Benedict (to share) and 2 sides of fresh fruit, one was all berries and the other was a few berries with various melon chunks. We ordered wisely! The Benedict was served with a side of crisp browned potatoes and was more than enough for 2 people! The eggs were perfectly cooked and the hollandaise was fresh, buttery and plentiful just the way I prepare it at home. I'm always happy when there's enough hollandaise to saturate my toasted English muffin! The fruit servings were more than generous and divinely FRESH. There were no rogue squishy berries and the cut-up melon had crisp edges. Even though the coffee carafe was on the table, our server made sure to refill our mugs and expertly tended to us. We love to linger over coffee to discuss our upcoming day and even after the plates were cleared away, our server continued to refill our coffee and water encouraging us to "chillax" and take in the view. We will be back! KC has a wonderful "foodie scene" and American Slang fits right in.
