Fun place for great barbecue! Lots of Top Gun memorabilia... this place was the setting in Top Gun where Goose plays the piano.Scott our waiter was great. The food was even better. The place isn't air conditioned so we elected to sit outside. The food arrived quickly although they were busy. Just the right attention from Scott. I ordered the burnt ends with corn (served in a cheese sauce) yum! My dining partners enjoyed pulled pork. We skipped desert- portions sizes very generous. A fun touristy kind of place - recommended!!Be warned though if you drive, not a lot of parking!

Ordered Rib Tips and Brisket. All in all it was OK. Rib Tips were half "almost jerky" and the flat of the brisket was a little dry. That said, ANY flat starts drying out once cut and the flat had very good "beef taste" and was very tender.Service for the entire meal was excellent so this was a decent choice given our time constraints

I knew the food was not going to be stellar from reading other reviews but man, what a let down still.I thought my own chicken breast, casually meal prepped at home, was the driest a chicken breast could get . Anyone's home cooked chicken breast can achieve more flavor.I think the idea here was that the Barbeque sauce would be the redeeming factor, not even that spared me from the stiff chicken disrespecting my throat. The Mac and Cheese was ok.As for the service...yeah it didn't get any better in that aspect either. There we were, beautiful sunny day, outside in a corner table - the umbrella only covering half of it at most. It would've been manageable had we had our water refilled, it took about 15 mins at the very least to make that alone happen, had to keep inquiring its ETA I know some will say go for the sake of the experience; speaking for my family and I, there was nothing remarkable about it - memories could've been made somewhere much tastier and attentive.

They really hold onto the history here. When you come here, you will definitely know this is where they shot a portion of top gun, lol. There are reminders everywhere! The vibe was there for sure. The service was decent, and the food was decent. Surprisingly enough, the highlight was the brownie for dessert. If you're a tourist and you like the top gun movie then you owe it to yourself to pay a visit. But if you're looking for really good food, there are other places in the gaslamp-maybe not as iconic though.

This place is also known as the Top Gun bar because a scene from the 1986 hit movie was filmed there. There is metered street parking within a reasonable walking distance and it is located right by a city train stop. The restaurant has a decent amount of dining divided between its outdoor patio, indoor dining area and full bar with seating,The bar has a ceiling fan that is covered with bras and the walls has air squadron stickers on them. The restaurant has a lot of personality.outside of all the Top Gun signs, posters and pictures, which remind you of the restaurant/bar being a set from the movie, you would never knew that some scenes were filmed here. After watching at the movie after my visit, you can kind of see it as the possible site, bu a lot has changed. You will find a piano here on the opposite side of the bar that is alleged to be the one that Goose played Great Balls of Fire on while his young son is sitting on top of it. The piano has a bunch of photos and articles on it that explains its significance and gives some background on the movie including the casting of two local boys to play Goose's son. There is a face cut out photo op on the patio, where you can pose as Maverick and Charlie.I sat in the dining area and my server was very friendly and helpful. They serve your barbecue regulars including ribs, brisket, burnt ends (you better get there early though), hot links, rib tips, and chicken. I ordered the Brisket sandwich with a side of baked beans. It took about 5 minutes for me to get my food. The food was ok. The beans were really good, but I was not a fan of the pulled pork sandwich or barbecue sauce that came with it. It was not as flavorful as I had experienced from other barbecue joints.Anyway, I am always skeptical of restaurants that have a gimmick. This one is no exception. It has ok food, good service, a nostalgic vibe and an interesting backstory. I would not come here for the food, per se, but if you are a fan of the movie Top Gun, this is definitely a must visit. Even though I was less than impressed with my meal, I am still glad that I was able to visit this piece of pop culture. A 3.5 star rating would be more appropriate for this place, but since that is not an option, I rounded it up to 4 stars.

A cute tourist stop if you loved the Top Gun movie. Great staff and decent BBQ. We ordered the burnt ends which were very tender and not fatty. Met some great people and took some fun pics!!

The food was delicious. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and added coleslaw, my side was the macaroni and cheese. Delicious, smokey flavor and a nice bbq sauce to accompany it. The service was good. The place was packed due to a conference but our server did a great job of checking on our party. The ambience was fun filled. I did not know the bar scene in Top Gun was filmed there. That was a neat surprise to see some of the info, piano and bar.

Food was ok. Ribs was good. I didn't like their Slaw. Service was slow. If I visit SD again, I will just eat somewhere else.

This IS the best bar in San Diego. Mike (a 27 year veteran of the bar) and Chris Coffee are amazing sh*t talkers who will make sure you have a great time. I used to live around the corner, and I miss spending time here regularly. For the TOP GUN appreciative crowd, you can't go wrong with this spot. The food is incredible, and the BBQ sauce is heavenly. When you're in San Diego, do not miss out! Cheers to Mike and Chris for an amazing time during each day of our SD trip. And here's a shout out to the fantastic people we met, laughed with and sang along to "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" with!

Judging from the reviews, you either love it or hate it with no in between. Unfortunately, we were part of the latter and did not enjoy our food at all. We ordered the Sampler for 4 and it looked promising, but it was disappointing. The bbq meats were all dry. I felt like at one point, the meat turned into dust when I touched it. For the sides, we got mac and cheese, cheese corn, coleslaw, and potato salad. The mac and cheese was bland. Coleslaw served here is vinegar based, which I personally didn't enjoy. The cheese and corn and the potato salad were pretty good though. Maybe we went when they weren't on their A game, but it definitely felt like a tourist trap that relied on their connection to Top Gun. The servers were really nice here, so 2 stars for service.
