This was our go-to Japanese place for some time now. No more. They are going through a "stage" like they did a few years ago. They have cut the quality of the proteins served on the combo lunch to INEDIBLE. The steak was so tough I could not bite a piece off to eat, the scallops were simply aged out. Scary. I have to say the fried rice, veggies, noodles, salad and soup were ok.That's something that can happen, but when I return the dish and I still get charged full price, that's not right. The server looked at me like she didn't understand, so I complained in Japanese. I don't think she understood that, either.It will be a couple of years before we try it again. Too bad for us.

Sushi 99 really stepped up with our 8 person to go order on NYE! We had called ahead of time to see if we could place a large order on NYE and they were very happy & kind over the phone and assured us we could order online on their website when they opened on NYE and place the order for a specific pickup time. 1) ordering online was seamless2) as soon as I placed the order they called to confirm the order and pickup location and how I wanted the hibachi cooked3) everything was ready on time4) everything was as we ordered Overall our favorite foods of the night were:The hibachi noodlesThe salmon nigiriThe white fish nigiriThe white tuna nigiri The new england rollSome of the sushi was bland, the edamame shells fell apart, and the fried rice was flavorless. But overall it was a great experience!!!

Very friendly, attentive staff. After being seated and taking our drink orders, we were almost immediately served a complimentary starter of what seemed like a shrimp tempura roll with a Mayo type sauce. Reminded me of a non spicy Bang Bang shrimp that Bonefish Grill serves. It was quite good and a perfect starter portion. We ordered assorted sashimi a la carte with a side of steamed rice and the Katsu Chicken lunch special that also included steamed rice. Clear soup arrived quickly along with the side salad that accompanies the Katsu meal. Both orders came out quickly and were fresh, expertly prepared and delicious. We'll definitely return - highly recommend!

My rating here is in part an "A for effort" type of situation, but overall a sound choice for sushi--especially if you're thinking more Americanized sushi. Allow me to explain. I came for lunch and the restaurant wasn't busy. The waitress very friendly and prompt and I asked her once I glanced over the menu if their shumai were homemade and she said no. I appreciated her honesty there. Given the situation of frozen shumai not made in house, I opted instead for some traditional rolls and nigiri: tuna, yellowtail, rolls plus smoked salmon and tuna nigiri. They brought out a clear soup (fine) and small fried krab sushi appetizer on the house which was a nice touch except the appetizer was a) fried and b) covered in a cream sauce, so it's not something you want prior to a selection of fresh, raw, fish at all--it will overpower the delicate taste of anything to come after it. I realize in America people like to load their sushi with sauces and Southerners fry everything that's in the kitchen except the chef, but really now, come on.The fish were all fresh-tasting and fine. I asked for ponzu sauce and was given something which instead tasted like teriyaki sauce--very sweet. I asked the waitress about it and she said it was their own, chef-made, ponzu. I asked if it was yuzu-based or otherwise, and she returned with another, yuzu-based and store-bought ponzu which was much better. The first sauce would be absolutely fine as a teriyaki marinade, however, and I must wonder what they really use it for normally. I will say this waitress seemed concerned and very determined that I get the sort of sauce I wanted. She was very sweet and attentive, as was another waitress who was helping out. (Also, this chef is my spirit animal: not making the laborious shumai in-house but making his own ponzu--which is a more interesting and fun chore.)So, no complaints really on food, though their traditional sushi is a little limited in depth and scope. Their more Americanized rolls seem, not surprisingly, to contain all the usual suspects so to speak and should please people seeking that type of sushi. The atmosphere is classy, modern decor and a charming mural of anime-style cats, classic Chinese pop music on the soundsystem (yes, Chinese, and the staff appears also to be Chinese which is fine: rare it is that you find actual Japanese staff at American sushi places). If you want high-quality but Americanized sushi, I recommend Sushi 99, but if you want very traditional sushi, maybe look more elsewhere. I cannot say I was disappointed however overall.
