I haven't personally visited but my husband surprised me with an array of pastries when he was in the area with a friend. He raved about the great service he received and was happy to have come across the bakery. I can't recall all the pastries but we tasted each and have been rationing them out since they are so good! We would definitely make the drive to the San Clemente location for sure! Not pictured: red velvet cake slice (also SO good!)

My whole family were frequent patrons - until we went on MLK Day. I was utterly heartbroken to discover from a chagrined counter server that they've removed the croque madame, one of the few actually French-ish dishes, from the menu. It was always my reason for going, as it was the best croque in the county. And apparently the Monte Cristo is gone, too. It sure looks like the owners' intention is to cheap out and dumb down the menu in favor of minimal-effort, easily assembled standard sandwiches and standard American breakfast. WTH. Like, dude, we don't need a French place cluttering up their menu with California club sandwiches! Let literally every other bakery handle that! And bizarrely, we also spotted that the pastry and dessert cases were 95% empty at 11 AM! At first I thought maybe the refrigerator case was broken, but no, while I was standing there, staff began loading up the fridge case with obviously old bars and other wilted desserts. The two or three croissants on the bakery side looked visibly stale. I've visited Chaupain and other very fine French bakeries enough to tell the difference between fresh and old product. I don't know what on earth happened, but Chaupain owners: you gotta hold the line against this kind of slow decline! Be French!

I've always been a fan of their pastries that I buy from my local farmer's market. I stopped by for lunch on a beautiful day and enjoyed the most amazing Shakshuka dish I've ever had. Seriously they perfectly cooked the eggs in the red pepper sauce that is seasoned so wonderfully. The cast iron pan came piping hot with the sauce still bubbling. The portion is large with tasty potatoes and their amazing baguette to dip in the delicious sauce and small fruit side. I'm so happy to have found a place to enjoy my favorite breakfast dish. I also grabbed a bag of their homemade granola that pairs perfectly with their yummy yogurts. I love this cute little cafe on Del Mar. Highly recommend it for a breakfast or lunch date. Also happy to note that Service is fast and friendly.

Food is excellent. Pastries are wonderful. Shakshouka is divine and a bit spicy. French toast was well portioned. The Ham & Bacon quiche lots of flavor! Our experience started well and we were even given an extra pastry on the house. Unfortunately, something happened with our order of quiche which never arrived. We waited patiently but felt uncomfortable eating while one of our party did not have her dish yet. Had to go inside and politely ask and was questioned. Was told it would take 15 mins and asked off were still wanted it. Bummer. Not a great response or offer. This is where it went downhill. Service is all about being kind and helpful and being genuine. It is hardest when something goes wrong but that's when you really have to empathize and seize the opportunity to make things right. That was not the case in how our situation was handled. Is never easy to try and ask and fix things yourself. Feeling like you've made a mistake or the staff didn't want to help or apologize. Had to wait 15 mins and the last in our party ate alone while we waited. Bummer.Traveling down the coast for this particular restaurant/bakery. Starting off really well and excited, but ended on a bad note. These type of service experiences really deflate and frustrate. Outdoor patio is really nice and spacious. Sit outside when the weathers nice, which is most of the year. Dogs welcome.

I love Chaupain Bakery! They have my favorite Spinach Croissant and some delicious pastries too. I love their outdoor patio. All the staff are very friendly. Sometimes if you go there before they close, you may get lucky enough to get treated to a free item!

Chaupain has the perfect example of a beautifully executed croissant. Buttery, flakey, dreamy... Yes it's in my dreams! My husband and I are natives to San Clemente, and we love the Mixed Berry Bateau. Grab it to go and enjoy eating by the sparkling ocean for a delight for the senses. Service was friendly, and I especially enjoy when French music is being played for a fun and immersive ambiance. After eating one croissant, you may just speak French...
