I have found the place to get my Christmas tamales! It's Tienda Morelos on Michigan Avenue. This one is called Tienda Morelos 6, because apparently there are at least five other Tienda Morelos in Indy? That's a lot of Tienda Morelos. You see: Tamales are very important to me -- they are a part of my DNA. So finding great tamales in Indy is very exciting, indeed. I happened upon Tienda Morelos because I was visiting a restaurant next door to this one. I popped in and found an amazing (although small) store that sells tamales and also pan dulce, fresh produce, chicharrones, packaged foods and more. All of the signs are in Spanish and everyone speaks Spanish, which is a great sign when you're looking for great Mexican food. The best tamales come from places where the people selling the tamales don't speak English, I've found. To buy the tamales, you need to pay at the front register first. You tell them how many tamales you want, and then you pay for that number. They give you a little slip of paper with the number of tamales you paid for. Then, you take your piece of paper to the tamale counter, and you pick which flavor of tamale you want, and the quantity. I got one pork and one chicken. They were both amazing: lots of masa but also lots of juicy meat. Not too much sauce, but also not dry. These are the best tamales I've eaten in Indianapolis so far. Tamales are just a small portion of the offerings at Tienda Morelos. They have a full panaderia in the store, plus a carniceria and other grocery items. The place is super small and slightly cramped, but the people are friendly and helpful, so it's a nice little place to shop after you've loaded up on tamales.

Food paradise! Maybe more than 5 stars. You won't believe your eyes when you walk in this little Mexican grocery which is Immaculate inside. Frozen Mexican treats greet you at the door. And you will flip out by the incredible selection of Mexican pastries, cakes and breads. Huge filled delectables for $1 each. Unbelievable. I picked up s flan for $2 and a cheese filled pastry. A family of four could share the pastry it was so huge. I love these little Mexican run groceries because they are each different and homey. But this one is special. Piñatas hang from the ceiling awaiting selection for a birthday party. The produce is brilliantly fresh. The meats are exotic and fresh as well. Pork, chicken, shrimp steak and much more that I did not recognize. They carry a complete line of spices, can goods, Mexican sodas, tortillas and much more. The staff is friendly but not fluent in English so bone up on your Espanyol. Weekends you can expect a friendly crowd anxious to bring home goodies. They make fresh tamales for carry out. People were buying them like crazy. $1.50 each for assorted chicken with either cheese, verde or red sauce but I think we want to keep this secret. They smelled so delicious. I'm going back for dinner tonight! Can't wait.

I typically go to Tienda Morelos for fresh burritos. They have great burritos for a very reasonable price. On my last visit I was additionally looking for some Goya juices to add to my second fermentation of my homemade Kombucha. They have a large selection of juices. It's also the best place to find Arena Pan to make Arepas or Papusas. The store is literally jam packed with a variety of items. I highly recommend this store and while speaking or understanding Spanish is helpful; it's not necessary.

I only come here for the tamales. They are the best in town. They sell them every single day. They may change the location of where they sell them in the store. Sometimes they sell them in the front near the pastries. Sometimes they sell them in the back near the produce. The tamales are $1.50 each and you much purchase the tamales first at the register and then pick them up. To my knowledge, they usually have cheese, red sauce, and green sauce tamales. However, everything's in Spanish and I'm not too sure if they have other meats. All I know is that I have found heaven on Earth. I have no problem going 15 minutes to get my tamales whenever I would like them. I will say that the tamales are cooked and then steam to maintain their freshness. So every time I get them they are very hot and I have to wait maybe 15 minutes for them to cool down so I can eat them. So please be warned. The service here is fast and always friendly.

Just realized I forgot to put out a review for Tienda Morelos! This is a pretty neat little Mexican grocery. It is packed to the gills with stuff and people...just enough room to move. Any obscure Mexican ingredient you need can be found here. They have it all...aisles and aisles of canned and bagged foods, freshly cut meats, fruits and vegetables, cold drinks, and even their own little bakery. From the bakery we got a concha, two churros, and an oreja. The oreja was pretty good, not the best I have had but good. The churros were unfortunately sort of stale. The concha was AWESOME!!!I would also like to give a shout out to how many flavors of Klass juice mixes they have. Literally they have an entire row worth, a whole top shelf. They had AT LEAST 20 different flavors of Mexican drink mixes. I love this brand! Their sandía is so good. Overall cool place. Can be a little stressful since it is so packed. Go if you're feeling adventurous! There is a taquería and a Mexican dessert/smoothie/juice place called Delicias Jalisco in the same strip mall! Also nearby is the Dominican restaurant Tropicalísimo.

Authentic grocery store. Visited here on recommendation of a friend from Mexico. The deli in the back has premade taco meat (tacos al pastor). It is amazing. The day I visited they also had fresh Ceviche and home made tamales as well. Both were excellent.

For some reason I thought this tienda was a lot bigger--I did have a little bit of anxiety from the tight aisles and floor to (practially) ceiling shelves. Oh and the smell from the very fresh chicharron box had me a little quesy. The carniceria in the back is not huge, but they have the basics meats and a few marinated meats; carne asada, pollo asada, al pastor, etc. I was going to get some of the taco meat per Michelle Q.'s review, but there was a long line at 5pm. :O I decided we would have meatless tacos and picked up fresh tortillas, black beans and queso frisco. Next time I visit I will have to find the ceviche and tamales.

The tamales here are on 10!! I almost don't want to give too many people the deets. I would hate to go one day and they're out. Seriously, the roja or verde are great. Heads up, the verde is much spicier than the roja. Also they are chicken not pork, and there are no other additions like veggies or cheese. These are just straight up tasty tamales. They are now an obsession for me. Go and get a tamale even if you don't like tamales!

Shopped there yesterday. The clerk was not very friendly. I purchased a bag of sweet potatoes chips. When I opened the bag, the chips were rank. It had a July 17 sale by date. I turned around and took the chips back. They didn't apologize or say anything. Not going back.
