Located in Sweetser, Indiana right by the Sweetser Switch Trailhead (which leads into the Nickel Plate), the Sweetser Cafe is a breakfast/brunch smalltown diner where locals gather, non-locals don't feel out of place, the food is good, and the welcome is warm. I stopped by on my Tenderness Tour because I was dragging a bit for the day and wanted to pick up an iced tea. Taking a camera crew (this tour was filmed from beginning to end) was a little awkward, however, the locals tolerated my presence quite nicely and I was able to have a great conversation with owners and employees about everything I was doing - a couple even donated to the cause and we got a great photo or two! The food here leans toward breakfast - like most breakfast/brunch joints - and this wasn't my first time here as I'd been here on a previous tour. Pricing is fair and definitely below an awful lot of Indy's brunch joints. While Sweetser Cafe doesn't have a website (that I'm aware of), they do have a social media presence and I do know they serve black angus beef, have daily specials, and are locally owned. Sweetser, Indiana is a smaller town of just about 1,000 in Grant County and is a great place to start for those tackling the Cardinal Greenway (Indiana's longest rail-trail). If you stop in Sweetser, you stop at Sweetser Cafe (at least before 2pm).

Good food and great service. Lots f locals seem to eat there. It was busy around lunchtime, but seating was readily available. Their tenderloin is advertised as 1/3 pound, but it takes 2 buns to cover it and it's at least 1/2" thick. With an order of fries, it's a big meal. Slaw was good too. Burger variations are 1/3 lb. as well. Neat little place with friendly folks. If you are in the area at mealtime, stop in. Simple but tasty with fairly large portions.

Hometown eating with that personal touch. Everything was clean and neat. Open grill area and counter seating gives you a nostalgic feel. Bree was friendly, welcoming, and took great care of us. Meat Lovers omelette was deliciously packed with bacon, ham, and sausage. My wife got the skillet and was quite pleased as well. It was a little of the beaten path, but well worth the detour! Cute little park area across the lot and along the bike trail.

I recommend the Sweetser Skillet. I prefer it without the cheese sauce. I've never been able to eat the entire thing. The leftovers that I bring home are a small meal. As close to the cafes, that every small town had, as you can get.
