I've hit up a lot of mom and pop soul food joints here in town. And I gotta say this will be my new go to spot. I ordered the pork chops and fries it came wit a small side spaghetti. I typically don't eat random spaghetti. But decided to give this a try. And let me tell you the spaghetti was. The bomb reminded me of the way. I make spaghetti when I'm at home. Period the pork chops juicy cooked well seasoned well, a knockout. The French fries they seemed homemade had a slight little bit of skin on them. Cook very well seasoned very well all in all. If you have not tried this place, you need to A.S.A.P.Southpaw Soul Kitchen has moved into my top 5 mom and pop restaurants in the city.

This hole in the wall soul food joint has parking available in the front and on the side of the restaurant, as well as on the street. This is a decent soul food spot in the vicinity of the Indiana State Fair. There is a small dining area with a few booths and a television to watch while you wait. You will find some chairs along the wall to sit while you wait for your to-go order. The floor is the restaurant could have benefitted from a good mopping. The restaurant in general looked a bit older and worn. The guy working the resturant during my visit was friendly enough, but my interaction with him was limited though.They recommend calling ahead before you come to place your order to save some time. The food is made fresh, so it takes a good 15 to 20 minutes to prepare. So, a call ahead would definitely save time.They have a daily with wings, fish, shrimp, burgers, po-boys and pork chops along with rotating daily specials that include salmon patties. You can choose from various sides inclduing rice, potatoes, cabbage, greens, green beans, mashed potatoes, and mac & cheese. There is also a nice Soulful Sunday menu that is worth checking out. I got the fried catfish platter with a side of potatoes and cabbage. It took about 15 minutes to be prepared. I got it to-go and took it home to eat. It was not the best soul food that I had, but it was good. It was a lot of food. I really liked the cabbage, and after I added some salt, the potatoes were pretty good. the catfish was decent but I felt was missing some seasoning. That is just my personal opinion though.

I believe this is a relatively new restaurant (brick and mortar) conveniently located (to me) at 34th and Central. It's my understanding they had a good truck before opening the restaurant. We decided to check them out Sunday when they have a special. Unfortunately we went later in the day and they had run out of many of their meats. I chose chicken wings and my partner selected meatloaf. Can I tell you the first taste of the mac and cheese was incredible!!! Best I had ever tasted (and I've had good Mac and cheese in my days). My second bite was of the greens-tender, flavorful and delicious. They also offered fresh squeezed lemonade. Serving sizes were generous!I would have taken a pic but I was too busy eating!!!Highly recommend, we will return!

I let the owner/operator choose my meal for me and it did not disappoint. I had the fried catfish, cabbage, and fries. I was iffy when he suggested the cabbage, but went with it and I'm glad I did! It was so well-seasoned and absolutely delicious. The catfish was perfectly breaded and fried and the fries were great too. I will definitely be back!There are just a couple of tables inside, so if it's a weekend, you might consider getting your food to go.

I tried this place about a month ago after finding them on Google while searching for soul food in Indy. I held off on writing a review, because my Catfish Dinner was inedible that day. It came with Spaghetti which was edible, but I had to throw the catfish away. The fish wasn't fried thoroughly, still pink inside, little flavor, and had a weird smell. I took it home and fried it to my liking, but then I noticed that my whole house smelled of fish. The smell actually made me nauseous. So, I gave up and just threw it out. I tasted the spaghetti and it was ok. Spaghetti is just not my thing unless I make it myself. I still wanted to give them another try, because I love Oxtail which they offer on Sundays. So, I stopped by today, and I'm so happy that I did. The Oxtail Dinner w/ Cornbread was worth every penny! It was absolutely delicious and very generous in the serving size. I barely ate half of the meal before I was full. I was also surprised to find rice underneath the Oxtail which was also cooked with sliced potatoes! My sides were Mashed Potatoes w/ Gravy & Mac N Cheese. I just wish they had Sweet Potatoes today. That would have been the icing on the cake for me. Everything was made with love down to the food being beautifully plated & presented. Wonderful customer service, clean environment, and the lobby has even been upgraded since my first visit. I was also so happy to get real Mac N Cheese and not just noodles w/ cheese sauce like most places serve. If the quality of food & customer service stays at this level, SouthPaw should be around for a very long time. I didn't hold the fish situation against them, as I understand the various factors that could have contributed to that situation. Either way, I'll definitely be back for Oxtail on Sundays for sure!

Staff are warm and professional. The food is delicious! Nice healthy portions. The Philly egg rolls are yummy, if you can get any. They are most certainly a favorite and deservedly so. Ali, the owner, knows his way around a kitchen and he is conscious of balancing flavors to make a lip smacking meal. Drop in and try them. They don't disappoint.

Yaaasss this is exactly what I was looking for on a Friday. Fried fish and spaghetti! The spaghetti was very tasty and fish was fire not fried too hard. Fries were on point too!

Our go to for soul food carry out. The two of us order one meal and then two extra sides because there is so much meat. try it.

All Hype food was not hitting on shit! I'm hoping the next time I try them it's more on point!
