I ordered takeout from here a week ago after an extremely exhausting day at work! I had seen a video online of someone eating Indian food and knew that's what I was craving for dinner that night. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and garlic naan. That's the most basic order for non-Desi individuals, but I know what I like! I actually really wanted butter chicken, but I didn't see it as an option so I settled for the tikka masala. Here's the thing...I loved the sauce on top of the rice and scooped with garlic naan. The chicken itself feels dry even considering that it's soaked in sauce. I'm not sure if it was cooked separately, or if it just had been sitting for a while, but the texture of the chicken was not my favorite. Admittedly, I am pretty picky about chicken. However, it's still something that didn't "wow" me.I was lucky enough that my fiance picked up the food, so I didn't get to see how the restaurant was or what the ambiance is. He said the service was friendly and that it was ready at the time they said it would be. So, yes it was good, but it didn't blow my mind the way I am waiting for an Indian restaurant to do.

Shalimar Indian Restaurant is located in Broad Ripple at the Broad Ripple Station strip mall. My fiancee and I recently moved to Indianapolis and like to eat Indian food. The reviews and the pricing intrigued us, so we wanted to check it out. Also, unfortunately crime struck the area and some armed burglar shot out the door while trying to rob Caliente (the next-door establishment). So, we wanted to show our support for small businesses and get some takeout from Shalimar. I cannot talk too much about the ambiance other than the interior made me nostalgic. It has red carpet with ample seating and buffet table near the entrance. If you dine at Shalimar, you can use a stamp card to get a free dinner once you've collected 10 stamps (2 stamps for every time you have dinner there, 1 stamp every time you have lunch). I got Malai Kofta, and my partner got the Jalfreezi. Vegans, no worry (most vegetarian entrees can be made vegan). I had a little cold, and hot curry is always the solution. I would give my Malai kofta 4.2 out of 5 stars. It's well made, not oily, and with properly made kofta balls. It could have used a bit more spice and salt, but I didn't request it to be made spicy (so maybe that's on me). My fiancee rated her dish 4/5 stars.I would definitely consider going back for sit down dining. It makes me feel like I was 10 years old again, and I was fascinated with the idea of going out to eat at an Indian restaurant while being in an Indian family. You get to eat the food your mom normally doesn't make because Indian food is so different based on the region. I hope others get a chance to support our small businesses in Broad Ripple and let them know that we are here to stay. We hope they do as well.

By the looks of the orders ready to be picked up, our decision to do carry-out is a popular one for this restaurant. Foodvwas hit and well-packed, and serving sizes (including the rice) were large. Food was delicious; medium spice was milder than I'd have expected yet still very good. We sampled saag paneer, shrimp bhuna, Nav ratan shahi korma, and chicken tikki masala -- all were excellent. Garlic naan was ok. Looking forward to trying more on their menu next time.

I hadn't had Indian food prior to coming to this place so I can't compare it to anything, however, if this is what Indian food taste like, I am definitely a fan! Tried this place on a whelm, and didn't quite know what to order however, the person that I was with did we ordered a variety of different foods just so I could sample them all. the place was empty. However, the DoorDash people were coming in nonstop to pick up to go orders. Our server who is also one of the family members that own the restaurant was fantastic. She made recommendations to us things that she didn't like and the food came out so very quickly!my favorite dish was the butter chicken. It was absolutely amazing. I will definitely be going back ASAP! Oh, and the great thing is although it's in Broadripple parking is free.

Door dash order, everything arrived hot and delicious Lamb korma- the lamb was tender and not fatty, had a very nice thick gravy with noticeable chunks of cashew and raisin Coconut soup- never had it before but love it...creamy and delicious Paratha- traveled well, was thin and flaky and not at all greasy Peshwari- this was the only thing I didn't love, the naan was well loaded with coconut and raisins but the bread itself was a little toughAll in all, I'd definitely order again

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our dine in experience at Shalimar this evening! We were greeted and seated promptly. Our server gave us a thin, crispy wafer (papadam?), filled our water glasses, and then gave us some time to look over the menu. Our appetizers came out quickly, and the entrees followed immediately after because he knew we were hungry! The lentil soup wasn't what I was expecting, but it grew on me over time. Strong cilantro and lemon flavors that were warm and comforting--I imagine it'd be perfect if you're sick. The samosas came with three different dipping sauces: a sweet brown, an almost lime green mint chutney, and a spicy red relish. All were good. Garlic naan was also good.My chicken curry wasn't very spicy (I ordered medium), but was delicious nonetheless. I tried my partner's biryani and it was also good.Servers were kind, friendly, and just seemed happy that we were enjoying the food. We'll definitely be back!

I'd been patronizing Shalimar since my first visit in the 90s, & it became my favorite restaurant as well as my dad's after India Palace had changed after Baloo's departure & another place we loved went out of business. I had not been to Shalimar for five years because my father died, & I no longer live in the area. I was so excited that a friend of ours drove a great distance to pick me up for a long overdue meal at Shalimar. Regrettably, I should have left my memories where they laid. The attempt to revisit a place with a lot of memories & to celebrate my deceased dad's birthday felt ruined. We saw on the door that they closed at 2:30 for a break in between lunch and dinner at 4:00. We had a good 45 minutes before closing time. I returned from the restroom to find half filled water glasses & a plastic water pitcher sitting on the table. The lunch buffet wasn't set up, so we ordered from the menu. Not sure what happened to the lunch buffet.Gone are the days when well dressed & professional waiters politely kept your water filled. Now, it was DIY like my last dine in experience at India Palace. Our waiter who was the same person who sat us was quite casual in a t-shirt. His rudeness increased throughout our visit. There was only one other table of people, & they left shortly after we came in. The waiter seemed annoyed that my friend who had not been here before needed a couple more minutes to peruse the large menu. He questioned the amount of food I ordered. Not that I owed him an explanation, but I said that I didn't live nearby & wanted extra to take home. My dad would have ordered 3x what I did even when we lived there to have plenty to take with us. I stupidly didn't request mine to be made vegan, but from past experience, I believe my favorite dish cannot be made that way. Besides, our waiter didn't seem the type to be accommodating, so I thought I'd just deal with a little dairy hoping it wouldn't make me ill...When he brought our food out, there was an extra entree on the table I did not order. He misunderstood me & was a bit argumentative. He then brought the appetizer I had actually ordered, but I was stuck with the third entree. I don't even remember what it was called. I'd never had it before. It was okay. At some point, the waiter asked if we wanted anything else because the kitchen was closing. He made an angry comment about the amount I had eaten. I had not eaten much and was taking the rest home. I cannot eat as much as I used to the older I get. Again, not any of his business & an awkward situation. He brought us to go boxes & plastic bags. I asked for the cylindrical containers they use for pickup orders. He brought those out as well, but they were styrofoam & not like the cardboard ones I'm used to. So much styrofoam. (Those styrofoam boxes leak, & I had a long way to go to get this home.) At first I thought he was being nice by offering to finish packing my food, but he did it in a rush. He didn't scrape everything into the to go containers and was quickly removing the chutney before I was even through with it. He said something about how staff needed to go & once he locks the door, it's locked. I have never been so rushed at a restaurant in my life. He led us to the door and promptly deadbolted it behind us. We didn't linger a long time. I've worked in the hospitality, food, and bar industry for years and dined in a lot of places. The time is usually when you can no longer order - not when you're being thrown out the door. His treatment bothered me more as I thought about it. I definitely over tipped, & I've worked for tips for much of my life.Reflecting, there were no pappad on the table anymore. No punch cards. My Maharaja beer was okay. I prefer Taj Mahal but didn't want a huge beer at that time. I'm sure he wouldn't have given me time to finish it. The food was good although some of it a bit different than I remember from all my other visits. Spice level was as requested. Prices have increased, which is expected, but I didn't have nearly as much to take home as I would have for far less a few years ago. I was glad to see my friend, but this was not a good experience. I've always given Shalimar five stars in the past. It destroyed what should have been wonderful & complimented my emotional memories of the person that could not be there. I actually doubt I will ever return. The experience also has me rethinking moving back to Indy. Things have just changed too much. To boot, I now see on Yelp Shalimar has had consistent health code violations recently. If I'd had any idea what it had become, I would have gone elsewhere or just stayed home. Extremely disappointing. I NEVER thought I'd be saying that about Shalimar. Goodbye! Dining here used to be an EXPERIENCE. This man couldn't cut it even by modern fast food standards.

NO MORE LUNCH OR DINNER BUFFET. I called today and asked, 10.06.2024. I mentioned that a buffet was still on the website and was told that it was old information. Too bad. Great food, location, and parking. Glad it's still here.

Good flavor but the chicken in the Indian Chili was way over cooked. Hard as beef jerky! The appetizers were dry as if cooked hours before and sitting under a heat lamp. Not fresh at all.
